After what feels like ages, Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed more information on Gran Turismo Sport’s livery editor.
So far, we’ve known very little about the franchise’s first real stab at user-created liveries. It was first shown at the Copper Box event way back in May 2016, but only showed the recreation of an existing real-world livery. Shortly after, Yamauchi explained the mode would feature two parts: one to place existing sponsors, and one for players to create their own stickers.
In the console racing genre, the Forza franchise has set the livery editing standard for a long time. More recently, 2015’s Need for Speed also impressed in this area, offering players plenty of ways to showcase their creativity. Apparently Gran Turismo Sport will match those titles.
The news comes care of IGN, as part of the same series that recently brought us footage of Bathurst in-game. During a tour of Yamauchi’s office in Japan, IGN received a first-hand demonstration. By the sounds of it, it came away impressed:
“It’s far, far more in-depth than I’d actually expected. It’s a fully-featured editor – you can choose from pre-made decals and shapes, or you can make and share your own, from scratch. GT fans who’ve been lusting for a livery editor capable of keeping up with the one available in the Forza Motorsport series for many years (and, more recently, the wrap editor in Need for Speed) are about to have their patience rewarded.”
Needless to say, this is good news for GT Sport players. With the game’s heavy online/esport focus, we expect many community-run series will utilize the feature for a more authentic race experience. It also offers an outlet for the more creative players in the game, in much the same way Photomode does.
Back in 2015, we explored the fun that could be had from recreating classic Gran Turismo liveries via Forza’s editor. While few of those car models appear in GT Sport, we look forward to the designs being applied to their spiritual successors.
While IGN states players will be able to share their creations, it doesn’t go into further detail. The Forza series has an entire economy built around livery design, where players can set up storefronts to show their wares. Need for Speed was more straight-forward, allowing players to simply download others’ work.
The other big question is how, if at all, players will be able to modify other user-created work. Forza locks custom-made layer groups so that only the original creator may modify them. If you create a livery using someone else’s logo, you aren’t able to share that on your storefront.
We’re very curious to see how this full-featured livery editor works within the community. With Gran Turismo Sport set for a release later this autumn, keep an eye out for answers in the coming months.
Thanks to queleuleu for the tip!
