PlayStation has published its annual top 20s of games downloaded from the PlayStation Store, and Gran Turismo 7 ranks among the highest — at least on PlayStation 5.
The tables, posted on the PlayStation Blog, show the top 20 most-downloaded PS Store titles separated both by platform and region — with data for Japan posted in a separate article on the Japanese-language version of the site.
Naturally the lists are dominated by multi-platform blockbuster titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and FIFA 23, but Gran Turismo 7 puts in a strong showing in all three regions on the PlayStation 5.
In Japan, GT7 is the third most-downloaded PS5 title of all, behind Elden Ring and the region-exclusive Earth Defense Force 6. For Europe the game ranks sixth, as God of War Ragnarok and, somehow, Grand Theft Auto V sneak ahead of it.
North American gamers also preferred NBA 2K3, Madden NFL 23, and Horizon Forbidden West as GT7 came home in ninth place across 2022’s downloads.
However the game hasn’t proven quite as popular compared to other software on PlayStation 4. While still buoyant in Japan, ranking fifth on the older console, it only just creeps into Europe’s top 20 — beaten by F1 22 and 2019’s Need for Speed Heat (which has been heavily discounted for much of the year) — while it doesn’t feature on North America’s top 20 at all.
Nonetheless, it’s generally a positive result for Polyphony Digital considering current game buying trends. There’s roughly a 3:1 to 4:1 split in favor of PlayStation 5 for cross-gen titles, and Sony reports digital sales outstripping physical by between 2:1 and 4:1 over the last 18 months.
With close to 300m game units sold in 2022 — pending the final, Q3 results in February — appearing in the top 10 of downloads represents a significant number of games in players’ hands.
