Gran Turismo 7 is the Series’ Highest-Grossing Title in the USA

According to recent information shared by video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella, Gran Turismo 7 is now the highest-grossing title in the entire series in the US market.

Piscatella, a well-known analyst for industry data specialist Circana (formerly NPD), regularly shares US market games sales data on social media — on BlueSky these days — and posted a round-up for the 2024 calendar year.

While sharing the data, Piscatella responded to a specific query about Gran Turismo 7 — now in its third year on the charts, as it approaches its third anniversary in just over a month, but not appearing on the annual top 20s — and responded that it had now beaten a record which we were all expecting:

This does rely on Circana’s own analysis tools as raw figures are, understandably, not available, but this data does give us some grounds to make a few estimates.

The leaked Gran Turismo Sport sales data from December 2023 gave us an approximate total of 12.98m sales for that title, with around 3.11m in the USA. For GT7 to appear fifth among all GT games ranked by units sold, it would need to have sold between the 3.44m of GT5 and the 3.47m of GT4 — a rather fine gap.

For GT Sport, only 24% of sales were in the US, which would give us grounds to extrapolate that Gran Turismo 7 has now sold somewhere in the region of 14.4m copies globally. That would place it a very close second in the all-time charts to the 14.89m of Gran Turismo 3, and another year of support would see it hit the top.

The fact that it’s already number one in terms of sales value is perhaps less surprising. Gran Turismo 3 was a $40 game when new and a significant number of copies came in console bundles. While it has occasionally been on sale, Gran Turismo 7 started at $70 (or $60 on PlayStation 4), and while other titles have had some pretty spicily priced special editions, they didn’t make up a large proportion of sales.

Nonetheless, using the sales split from the GT Sport leak, we can make an estimate that GT7 has grossed around $650m globally — or around $155m in the USA, ahead of the $120m we’d estimate for second-placed GT5.

Hopefully with a big year for the Gran Turismo World Series coming up, and as GT7 enters its third year with little sign of updates slowing down, we’ll get some official figures from Polyphony Digital similar to those seen at previous live events. Either way, it seems that Gran Turismo 7 is coming out as a success story.
