Updated (28/06): PlayStation has subsequently confirmed the full contents, as expected, in a PlayStation Blog post.
The trailer for the upcoming Gran Turismo 7 1.35 update has arrived slightly earlier than usual through PlayStation’s Chinese partner Bilibili, confirming the vehicles coming to the game on June 29.
It’s the second time that we’re aware of that official PlayStation space on “the B-site” has previewed a GT7 content update ahead of schedule, with v1.18 in July 2022 being the first. Just as it did a year ago, the channel posted the official, 30-second teaser several hours ahead of the expected announcement on the PlayStation Blog and Gran Turismo website.
There’s some good news and bad news, and we’ll start with the latter: the trailer doesn’t contain any hints of a new circuit. That means that, in all likelihood, there won’t be any new circuits or circuit layouts in the update.
However on the positive side, we now have official confirmation of the three vehicles coming to the game tomorrow and they validate our guesses for the cars’ identities based on series founder Kazunori Yamauchi’s “silhouettes” Tweet.
Gran Turismo 7 Update 1.35 New Cars
The headline vehicle is the Aston Martin Valkyrie, an 1,100hp hypercar developed by the British marque and its then-F1 partner Red Bull Racing and designed by legendary aerodynamicist Adrian Newey. It sports a 6.5-liter Cosworth V12 engine, backed up with an electric motor and KERS system developed by Integral Powertrain and Rimac.
Additionally — and likely somewhat cheaper to buy — players will be able to get hold of two classic rally homologation models in the shape of the 1995 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III GSR and the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Both are Gran Turismo staples and return from earlier entries in the series, though the Impreza doesn’t appear to be the Spec C model of older titles.
Players will also be able to pick up a new vehicle livery, for the Lexus RC F GT3 ’17. If you purchase the car through Brand Central you’ll be able to select the Anest Iwata Racing livery as used by Gran Turismo world champion Igor Fraga in Super GT this year.
Gran Turismo 7 Update 1.35 New Races & Menus
Headlining the new events will be six new challenges in the esoteric Music Rally mode. This hasn’t received an update since the game was launch, and the new challenges will double the offering.
If you’re not familiar with the mode, it’s essentially a cruise against the clock where you have to beat the beat. You’ll drive a provided vehicle — existing events have been heavy on the classic and vintage cars — with a minimized interface while music plays around you.
The goal is to run out of music before your beat count expires, so you’ll need to drive through checkpoints to replenish the number of beats you have remaining. You’re scored on how far you managed to drive, and the gold targets can be tricky.
We haven’t yet seen the car/circuits combinations for all six events, but the soundtracks consist of DRIFT (from the Gran Turismo 7 OST, Find Your Line), Good Old Days (Classixx Remix), Hooked on America, Life’s Coming in Slow (also from the GT7 OST), and Marechia. The final one is a bit of a treat for fans, set to the GT7 version of that classic GT track Moon Over the Castle.
The two new Japanese classic cars will feature in their own Extra Menu Books, for “Subaru WRX” and “Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution” — with rewards for collected all three cars in each book yet to be revealed.
Finally there’s two new Scapes curations, featuring Monterey — including the real-life inspiration for the reworked Grand Valley circuit — and a set called “Field of Flowers” which may take in multiple global locations.
We’ll still have to wait for more information, such as the pricing and availability of the cars, in the patch notes arrive with the update on Thursday June 29.
