Gran Turismo 7’s Next Update is Coming Soon, Adds Aston Martin Valkyrie

An unexpectedly early post on social media from Polyphony Digital studio head Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that Gran Turismo 7’s next update is coming next week, and will add one of the fastest road cars ever made.

The post takes its usual form of a teaser showing the cars coming to the update heavily disguised in shadow — sparking the usual guessing game among fans — so all we can say definitively at present is that there are at least three cars coming in the update.

However the image does give us sufficient information to be able to identify all three vehicles — at least by make and model, if not specific trim levels:

The first of those is the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which somewhat jumps out at you in the bottom-left corner. It’s a car that was originally mooted as a possible entry for the Le Mans Hypercar category, back when the rules were first being developed, but the British brand decided to go its own way in collaboration with its then-partner F1 team Red Bull Racing.

Designed by the legendary Adrian Newey — who also created the Red Bull X1 (later called the X2010) for Gran Turismo 5 — the Valkyrie is one of the most extreme road cars ever made. It uses a howling, 1,100hp, 6.5-liter Cosworth V12 and features all of the aerodynamic aids possible on a two-seat, road-legal car.

First revealed in 2016 as the RB001, the Valkyrie has only just started to reach customers’ hands, so it’s going to be a first chance for many of those awaiting delivery to try it out in anger. It’s also something of a full circle, with Aston Martin’s chief creative officer Marek Reichman noting that Aston Martin’s Vision Gran Turismo project — the DP100 — played a role in pushing the brand towards a mid-engined hypercar.

The other two vehicles in the image are some more classic Gran Turismo fare, by way of a pair of roadgoing rally cars from Japan.

On the right-hand side of the image we can see what looks like a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III, given away by the additional hood vent on the driver’s side. That’ll return from GT games of old, having skipped out GT Sport like so many other classics, joining the Evo IV, Evo V, and Evo VI models.

Towards the top of the image we have the Lancer’s arch-nemesis: the Subaru Impreza WRX, in what looks to be 2003-2005 “Blobeye” form. Thanks to the wide range of WRX models it’s difficult to say precisely which version. It could be the highly rated WR1 model, which paid homage to Petter Solberg’s 2003 WRC title, or the Spec C which featured in GT4GT6; we’ll have to wait to find out!

Of course the “silhouette” only hints at what cars are coming to the game in the next update. We won’t know what other features, events, or even tracks (if there are any) are in the update until much closer to the release date.

As for the date, that’s also unconfirmed but we’re expecting it to be on the usual update schedule and arrive on Thursday June 29.
