GTPlanet Weekly Rewind: Accounting for the Unexpected

Gran Turismo 6

Gran Turismo 6 continues to evolve and this past week’s 1.03 update is proof of that, adding in yet another new vehicle and breathing new life into the previous update’s newest addition, the BMW M4 Coupé by way of adding a fully-detailed interior. There’s no telling when the next major update will hit or what it will contain, but one thing is for certain: it won’t disappoint. With the remaining Red Bull X Challenge events due at the end of the month who’s to say we aren’t counting down to the next big thing?

Finally some noise! The FT-1 is an intimidating looking car, and when viewed from the right angle it can be downright daunting, or it can be something that’s wholly disconcerting – it’s one of those cars that has to grow on you for maximum appeal. The steering wheel and HUD are something else as well; a unique touch is that with an LCD screen mounted in the steering wheel that displays the current gear selected.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m already looking forward to the Spec II update and hopefully it won’t be that long until we have our hands on the new and improved track creation tool, because I have to tell you, that’s keeping me interested as there’s so much that’s going to be possible with it, even moreso once you factor in the recreation of a track using GPS coordinate data coming in an update once the initial tool has been released.

There’s plenty to look forward to but the one thing that needs to be addressed before any of this is allowing the AI to use DLC content as it’ll add greater variety along the field, because let’s face it, being the only one on the field with a new car may seem interesting at first but it’ll leave the game feeling empty after a while.

Gran Turismo 6

We’ve seen a lot of this particular addition over the past week and rightfully so given its unique appearance and defining lines. Of course I’m talking about the FT-1 Concept which is now available in Gran Turismo 6, giving players a one-of-a-kind experience with the concept vehicle marking future plans for the Toyota Motor Company.

BMW M4 Coupé – Now with an Interior!

2014_bmw_m4_v103update

When the all-new 2014 BMW M4 Coupé was introduced to the game, sadly, it was done so without an interior but that has now been remedied as the M4 is now complete and offers an experience it was originally incapable of.

Gran Turismo 6 1.03 Update

Gran Turismo 6

We’re cataloging yet another set of changes, this time those found in the recent 1.03 update that is now available, and while it may weigh in at a comparatively light 99MB, this update packs a punch.

An overview of the most important changes are as follows:

  • Fitting custom wheels now preserves the original tyre widths.
  • In-car visibility improved on some models.
  • Handling on MR vehicles has improved.
  • While adjusting power or weight limits, displayed PP updates in real-time.

For the entire rundown of all that is shiny and new, including Seasonal Events, be sure to stop by the original post here.

GTPlanet Member of the Week

It is once again time to acknowledge a member of the GTPlanet community; a member who has stood out among the hundreds of thousands of members already here, both old and new alike for all that they’re worth and all they have contributed to the community.

This week we’re placing our second GT Photomode regular in the hot seat, so let’s give a warm welcome to yet another Junior member among the ranks, Boadbulrahman!

The interview is now live and provides the usual share of laughter, but more importantly provides the medium of getting to know your fellow GTP members a little bit better, and his knack for all things photography. For the whole kit-n-kaboodble be sure to stop by the official Member of the Week thread.

Anyone you’d like to see recognized as the Member of the Week? Drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Member of the Week” and fill it out with your choices and they’ll be featured in upcoming Rewinds. NOTE: You cannot nominate yourself.

Kaz: Pushing the Virtual Divide – Available January 22nd

We talked about this last year September after the phenomenal Jalopnik Film Festival, and during that period there was no announced premiere date as it was “Up to Sony”, however, that’s no longer the case the the documentary film will premiere next week Wednesday, January 22nd.

For all the information you’ll ever need, be sure to stop by the original post here, and remember, our own Jordan Greer is going to present in the film!

GTPlanet Vehicle of the Week

ibzbkRsHF5xQNb

This week’s featured vehicle, recommended to us by Nelsonatormjn16, features the 1987 Sauber-Mercedes C9, a return to endurance racing after a 30-year hiatus after the 1955 tragedy at Le Mans.

The C9 was developed from a series of Le Mans Prototypes by Peter Sauber, the underpinnings of which were an all-aluminum monocoque with a rear steel subframe for the Mercedes-Benz powerplant. During its developmental year in 1987 which it debuted, it was fielded out to Kunos Racing where it saw little success. Upon the 1988 season when Mercedes made it a factory effort, five victories were had despite the fierce competition from the Silk Cut Jaguar team.

In 1989 the C9 was fitted with an all-new M119 DOHC V8 that afforded it the ability to dominate all races of the seasons, winning outright at all but one. At that year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans race the C9 set a record of 249 MPH on the Mulsanne Straight, where it would go on to win with drivers Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens behind the wheel.

GTPlanet Tune of the Week

Gran Turismo 6

This week’s featured tune, recommended to us by tuning aficionado danbojte and courtesy of Motor City Hami of Motor City Tunes features the 2003 Honda S200 Type V built for the Seasonal Event challenge at Matterhorn.

Matterhorn turned out to be quite a challenge. The track calls for radically different tunes than typical, flatter racing circuits. Because of the over the hill braking zones and the long downhill sections, I had to make this tune much more stable in order to drive it more aggressively. I am currently ranked top among my friends and 383 world wide with this new tune. It is much easier to push hard than the one I posted last night.

Victory is the name of the game as usual and if it’s a deserving victory that you’e after and you want to do so in more than 2000 ways, then you’ll want to stop by and see the tune for yourself.

Exactly like the Picture and Vehicle of the Week features, if you have any suggestions for the upcoming Rewinds be sure to drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Tune of the Week” and let me know. NOTE: You cannot elect your own work.

GTPlanet Photomode Competitions

apmcheader_006

We’ve reset the counter for the sixth chapter in the Gran Turismo series and the photomode competition is back and better than ever.

In Week 6 of the Standard and Advanced competitions for GT6 you are to put your best foot forth and show the community just how seriously you take your in-game photography. All you need to know is as follows:

Week 006, Standard: Twice The Fun – “Time to exploit the new “2 Car” feature for photo-travel… Simple really, just show us your best photo using this mode with any 2 cars you like. Bonus if you could “title” your shot like Beauty and the Beast, Peas in a Pod, Separated at Birth……you get the idea”

Week 006, Advanced 2.0: Italy vs. France – “Nobody does sports cars and convertibles quite like the Italians, while the French are masters of effortless cool. Pick a side in this Euro battle for the week, and remember: no matter who wins, at least both languages sound sexier than German.”

For all of the relevant information pertaining to this week’s challenges be sure to stop by here and here.

Closing Thoughts

Gran Turismo is quickly becoming a force that transcends the established goal originally set out, and while that goal is still at the forefront it has enveloped several other facets along the way becoming far more than just a game driven by enthusiasm. It’s now become a brand image driven by many of the same things an automotive manufacturer would be driven by.

Gran Turismo plays such a pivotal role in Sony’s lineup of first-party titles for the PlayStation brand that it often leads the way, and will more often than not achieve more out of the platform than what others are capable of. Gran Turismo has gained such recognition over its 15 year lifespan that it has become a faculty – a product of its own doing, no less.

Still going plug-free but they’ll return at some point in a new fashion, but I do implore you all to stop by the official Rewind thread and breathe some life into it, at least until the new comments system goes live.

I’m spent. Until next week, keep racing!
