Last week saw a modest evolution in the Weekly Rewind, mentioning over a dozen racing games, fully acknowledging that while those of us who enjoy the thrill of going fast may be but a niche crowd, with so many options readily available the scene for racing games isn’t as much of an empty void as some would be lead to believe. In the grand scheme of things Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport are the centers of our world; a world where they are but a grand representation in the racing ecosystem; a world that expands far beyond their perspectives.
You may or may not be able to tell, but that is yet another screenshot showcasing Project CARS, more specifically the Formula A race car outfitted in a spectacular Jordan livery. Another racing simulator that’s been near and dear to my heart for years on end has been GTR 2. Simbin has released some real gems since GTR 2’s 2006 release, however, next to nothing is able to compare with its sheer expansive nature.
The game itself may have aged in the visual and physics department but it’s nothing a few modifications here and there can’t fix, and when you get into the quality mods for vehicles, tracks, a racing attire, you can easily lose yourself in downloading for hours on end — and you haven’t even begun to play the game yet.
Speaking more of last week, you were all treated to some of the recent developments in Project CARS. This week you’ll be treated to yet another recent racing game with awe-inspiring audio acuity, Raceroom Racing Experience, otherwise known as R3E.
Ford Matech GT GT1 at Raceroom Raceway. I doubt you’ll hardly remember the track location as you’re too busy turning up your speakers, or wondering why you may not have ever heard of this before now. If you have a gaming PC then you can check this out on Steam.
One of the best things about R3E is that it costs nothing to play. That’s right, it utilizes the F2P (Free-to-play) model, which means all you have to do is download the game and start playing right away. However, additional content does carry a premium as is common with most F2P titles.
Think of all of this as the calm before the storm. A storm that begins next month with the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One, and with them Driveclub and Forza Motorsport; a storm that will see the height of its grand spectacle with the release of Gran Turismo 6. It’s going to be a crazy couple of weeks, of that I assure you.

GTPlanet Weekly Race Series (WRS) Online Events: 2013 WRS F1 Championship
We’ve been here before but more importantly you’ve been here before; if it’s something related to Formula One then you’ll know that I’m going to tackle it head-on, and once again that’s precisely what I’m going to do here. The WRS Suzuka Grand Prix lies in the horizon and there’s on better time to prepare than right now.
There’s no hard feelings here, you’d might as well be racing in the actual Grand Prix’s because the rules, regulations and practices are pretty much identical. You have 2 Practice Sessions (instead of 3), Knock-out Qualifying, and of course the race itself – all over the course of a single week. To give an even greater feeling for the attention to detail being paid for this series look no further than the Steward’s comments:
This special event series has been designed to offer participants a Full Formula 1 Experience covering all available GT5 Grand Prix Circuits. Each stop on the calendar is scheduled on the same weekend as the corresponding real life FIA Formula 1 Grand Prix and includes free practice sessions on Thursday and Friday, a three round knockout qualifying session on Saturday, and a full length race on Sunday.
Full Formula 1 Experience
- Live F1 style knockout qualification
- Multiple tire compounds – Race Soft and Race Hard
- Drivers must use both compounds during the race, but will only be provided two sets of Race Soft tires
- F1 style formation lap and standing start (race starts at the 3 minute mark)
- Race distance will match the real FIA Formula 1 Grand Prix (+1 for the formation lap)
- The driver championship will utilize the FIA Formula 1 point system (25 | 18 | 15 | 12 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 1)
This time things are going to be done a little bit differently. The live broadcast for the race on October 12th will be accompanied by several live commentators giving the event that additional feeling of authenticity.
You’d better be prepared for some of the most hair-raising and intense on-track action seen nowhere else. Who will be the Sebastian Vettel in each of the five WRS Divisions? I can’t wait to see the results!
Stop by the official thread here and remember that you NEED to be registered before officially participating in the WRS, and that can only be done by submitting a time for the official GTP Registry Qualifier.

GTPlanet Member of the Week
Once again it’s time to acknowledge a member of the GTPlanet community; a member who has stood out among the hundreds of thousands of members already here, both old and new alike for all that they’re worth and all they have contributed to the community.
This week the cycle has started anew as we’re once again acknowledging a junior member among the ranks. It’s time to welcome our newest inductee into the Member of the Week hall of fame, sparkytooth!
The interview is now live and provides the usual share of laughter, but more importantly provides the medium of getting to know your fellow GTP members a little bit better. For the whole kit-n-kaboodble be sure to stop by the official Member of the Week thread.
Anyone you’d like to see recognized as the Member of the Week? Drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Member of the Week” and fill it out with your choices and they’ll be featured in upcoming Rewinds. NOTE: You cannot nominate yourself.
GTPlanet Vehicle of the Week
Developed from the award-winning Lotus Evora road car, the Evora Type 124 Endurace Racecar is the next step in the evolution of the Evora and made its debut at the ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hours.
With the intention of racing the Evora from the outset, the Evora’s chassis was designed with this in mind and endurance races were the perfect event to showcase the Evora’s efficiency, handling and durability characteristics.
Have a suggestion for next week’s featured image? Drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Vehicle of the Week” and fill it out with your two choices and they’ll be featured in upcoming Rewinds. NOTE: You cannot elect your own work.
GTPlanet Tune of the Week
While this week’s featured tune breaks away from going hand-in-hand with this past Wednesday’s Seasonal Events challenges in GT5, it does allow you have a bit of fun with the rotary-powered Mazda RX-7, and honestly, who doesn’t enjoy some rotary-powered shenanigans?
Once again recommended to us by tuning aficionado danbojte and courtesy of praiano63, the spotlight is on the Mazda RX-7 Type R Bathurst R tuned for 450PP outings.
Victory is the name of the game as usual and if it’s a deserving victory that you’e after and you want to do so using the brilliance of the R13B rotary engine, then you’ll want to stop by and see the tune for yourself.
Exactly like the Picture and Vehicle of the Week features, if you have any suggestions for the upcoming Rewinds be sure to drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Tune of the Week” and let me know. NOTE: You cannot elect your own work.
GTPlanet Photomode Competitions
In Week 149 of the Standard and Advanced competitions you are to put your best foot forth and show the community just how seriously you take your in-game photography. All you need to know is as follows:
Week 149, Standard: Wheels – “Basically, the main subject of your shot has to be the wheels of your car/cars. You can be artistic or realistic. You can use any car/s you want.”
Week 149, Advanced 2.0: Movie Car Chase – “Any good car related movie has a car chase scene it. For this week I’d like to see some recreations of an action packed shot from your favourite car chase.”
For all of the relevant information pertaining to this week’s challenges be sure to stop by here and here.
Closing Thoughts
Quiet weeks mean relatively unspectacular Rewinds in so far as Gran Turismo content is concerned, but as began upon last week, the racing scene doesn’t begin and end with Gran Turismo. I’m going to risk repeating myself once again, but with so many options readily available to us it’s surprising we all haven’t gone mad. Or maybe we have and we’ve just found a community of like-minded individuals which neuters the madness. Psychology 101.
It’s yet another Formula 1 weekend but we’re all damn certain Vettel is going to steal another victory and lap everyone in the process a whopping seventy-two times. Despite having said that I’m still looking forward to the race. Why? I love the sport. Vettel’s dominance is really no different than that of Michael Schumacher’s reign of unending dominance. Hooray!
Now a message from our sponsor, me:
While you’re salivating at the very thought of Gran Turismo 6 finding itself into your PlayStation 3 this coming December why not take the time to become a full-fledged member of our wonderful community. It’s free and we have cake! Okay, we don’t have cake (the cake is and always will be a lie, remember this!) but we do have a strong community and we’re always talking about something interesting. If you aren’t already a member you should join today and maybe you can work out a patented antidote for “Lying Cake Syndrome”. Seriously, it’s been years since I’ve had cake.
My shameless Twitter plug has also returned!
Once again I forgot to mention that I’m on Twitter now. What was once going to be a bit of parody account (because I don’t use Facebook or Twitter for any reason whatsoever) has quickly turned into me using Twitter rather effectively. So, follow me and suggest all things Rewind-worthy from the comfort of your tablets, phones, or Skynet-linked computers. Remember, when the machines finally rise you’ll need someone to write pieces regarding the matter littered with Armageddon-y undertones and I can be just that guy! What were we talking about? Right, Twitter, so if you’ll follow me here the Rewind can be delivered to you in a timely fashion not seen since snail mail. Wait, that’s not the right thing to say!
You will be showered in Rewind, Seasonal Event and future article goodness courtesy of yours truly, so there’s that worth looking forward to once I’ve bothered to get the thing up and running. It can also be used to suggest things for upcoming Rewinds, so that’s now two ways you all can keep me on my toes.
As I’ve said, it was a relatively relaxed week and nothing really came of it but the clock is ticking down to the beginning of everything new. Two of those clocks will stop next month while the last clock stops in December. Crazy couple of weeks coming up and it should prove to be quite the ride, so you’d be better brace yourselves for whatever lies ahead. Until next week, keep racing!

For whatever reason forza 5 just does not look real. I can’t put my finger on it.. for example all the blacks look like plastic * yes i can tell plastic from paint, i collect hot wheels and plastic body’s have this distinct white glare to them painted bodies don’t * Im not Trying to start a flame war but there’s something off . Just like drive club has there colors all saturated wrong.. like in motor storm apocalypse..
I’ve played all the Forza games and I understand what you’re saying, but I think you’re nitpicking. I don’t think there’s a game out there that can accurately reflect “paint” just yet, I think Turn 10 have cranked their shine factor up to 11 and it’s starting to look a wee bit like liquid chrome. But PD are much the same, although I think Kaz is aware of the pitfalls of making cars look “too good”.
Drive Club looks great, it’ll all be part of the feel – I think they purposely went for that look instead of trying to make the colour levels pop too loudly.
I wish PD would start making second hand cars with faded paint and rusty exhausts. Dirty windows, exhaust fumes, weather-worn tyres, etc etc. Wouldn’t take much to do, would push the realism of the Used Car market in a new direction and would certainly give the competition something to chase!
;)
LOL AERO, get your used car, and just like n real life things start to go wrong. I have a little red Honda CRX 1998 used. I like the car allot but it took me forever to fix the design flaw which had to do with the water proofing the hatch of the car. The result was a pretty severe leek whenever it rained. In addition the AC is out, along with the defroster, which means the windows in the car will completely fog over and you cant see a d*m thing while driving in the rain. Terrifying to say the least. If that were to happen to the in game CRX, well…ROFLMAO
I like the rusty cars part. I mean how often can you find an 80’s car with 200 000 km on the meter in mint condition? :P
Nice untouched(?) pic of the Bathhurst R RX. Did Forza 4 turn on the lights? I’m confused ’cause I see part of a FM watermark in the lower right corner of the pic… with lights on and I don’t recognize the corner. Then the “Tune of the Week” is absent a caster adjustment. Cross breeding?…
Uhhh thats the Lotus Evora. The Bathurst RX-7 clearly shows a GT insignia in the upper right hand corner of that picture.
Lol… sometimes you only see what you wanna see. Thanks Pit ;)
Lol you can’t adjust caster in GT , only camber. Maybe in GT6 we will be able to adjust caster.
No prob Phil, We all are just ready for GT6.
It’s off-topic but Jamie Whincup from Red Bull Racing Australia has scored the pole position for the Bathurst 1000. Tomorrow’s race gonna insane :)
El Camino in Forza? Mark from Classic Game Room will be very happy to play!
Yeah Marks always wanted one lol hes a funny guy
I’ll tell you what, R3E has the sound down pat. Also, does anyone else what PD to come out with Zandvort?
That’s a hell of a course. I saw it in some of the other R3E YouTube vids.
(Watches the R3E vid) and you wonder why we want the car sounds redone.
Its funny that you guys erased my apology! I apologized but it was erased, so I’ll say it again. I apologize to the community for my statements recorded during the Kaz car crash article. It was juvenile and immature but I felt that I had to defend myself against a slew of put downs and insults, including insults against my family. I do apologise and am truly sorry for my involvement in those statements. I hope we can move on from this and I will have only positive constructive statements from this point forward. Thank you
Does anybody know if and when pcars is comming to Playstation? (PS3 or PS4)
It feels like they have been showing pictures and video’s for a few years now.
But I’ve never read about a release date.
Current release window is 2014.
Sebastian Vettel #1 in F1!
You mean the Red Bull car…Vettel is only a small part of that 1st place team. Put most drivers in that car and they would be winning the Championship too.
Yes, the car is awesome! However, Sebastian Vettle is amazing behind the wheel and #1 in the championship for a reason. IMO he is the best driver in F1 history and will be for years to come! Seb Vettle #1!
@JeremiahTB. It’s hardly “just the car” sure it’s amazing, and Newey is a genius, but Vettel has 272 points, while Weber has 130.
#1 in the championship for a reason, definitely, he’s a consistent driver.
The best driver in F1 history… no. Very much not. You know how I know? Because this man is: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Clark
Omg I said in my opinion he is the best driver in F1 history. Some people on here just want to argue for the sake of arguing! Lol I’ve done enough arguing for a while. Vettle has acomplished more in his short career than most in F1 history!
I’m not trying to argue, if I were I’d have responded to your meltdown. :P
Vettel is the most successful and may one day be the greatest, but he’ll never be “the best” unless he improves his driving. I was disagreeing with your wording, not your point. Calm down, we’re not all after you, just most. ;)
I agree with itty, people sit there and say Sebastian Vettel isn’t a good driver. Are you bloody kidding me?! F1’s are one of the fastest, and most difficult machines in the world to drive, and for anyone to say Vettel isn’t a real driver or a good one needs his head in a bucket of cold water. Anyone who can drive that fast around a circuit in one of those amazing machines has my respect. Not to mention he got Jeremy quite a few times on TG, which is quite difficult for someone to do, not to mention hilarious.
Project cars has some amazing visuals holy
IKR it looks like real life!
I’d love to sit in that WRS lobby and watch these players “throw down”, I truly admire the skill level.
You can’t join the lounge, but you can watch the broadcast of qualifying live on youtube on oink’s channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWEzl-wEggc
@Tena; LoL
@Toko; dont be mad at me, I know he’s also GT-fan. Its not that I hate forza..but I hate it :P actually I dont know why I feel like that. Never had xbox or Forza. I think it’s becouse of micrososft. Just trying to explain it for my self ;) cheers
So you dislike it even though you’ve never played it?
Logic.
I wasn’t mad at you, was just letting you know. No worries. ;)
@T-12: It doesn’t have to be logic, it’s just how I feel. Am never gonna say to anybody dont buy it becouse it’s mess, or something like that. Am just complaining when you mix it up together with GT, (and you’r good at it ;). I would say, am just a GT fanboy ;) Cheers
Yes! My Favorite car is also the Picture of the week!! :D
Whhaaaa? Your sure the Formula A pic at the top isn’t real? ;) It looks amazing!
Wow you guys acknowledge F1 for this weekend, yet the biggest motorsport event in the southern hemisphere is on and more people will be watching that over little fragile plastic cars just stating my opinion.
I’m with you on that…
Bathurst 1000 is on and, in Australia, it takes precedence over EVERYTHING! Family outings, girlfriends, phone calls, moving house, bushfires, home invasions, a car through your bedroom wall – all these things fall by the wayside when the Supercheap Autos Bathurst 1000 is on!
For those of you interested in what the Top Gear site has to say about Bathurst, follow the linky thing… http://sundayafternoonclub.blogs.topgear.com/2013/10/11/topgear-com-at-australias-greatest-race-the-bathurst-1000/
Am sorry saying this, but I hate Forza advertisments on GTPlanet. Sorry T-12, I know u are forzafan.. can not handle it. Forgive me T-12 ;)
Umm. T-12 is not only a Forza fan you know… :\
Tugs at my heart strings too, Slonkoo. But hey… whatcha gonna do?
Toko I think he knows T12 is a GT fan
If Forza wasn’t such a direct ripoff of Gran Turismo, I’d like it a lot more. But, hey’ like demoncrats, it’s here to stay, so you kind of have to grin and bear it. And if you can afford all the crud it costs to play it with a wheel controller, it is a nifty ripoff.
No you wouldn’t. You’d just go on and on about how much of a monopoly Microsoft is and how Sony is feverishly innocent and wrongfully convicted of every wrong-doing any other worthwhile business would commit.
@ e30 freek Oh? I guess I must have thought differently then. Haha. :P
For Ferrari juices only, do I have MS systems. I even bought a MS steering wheel to up the experience. Hopefully, the GT series will increase it’s Ferrari library so I won’t have to purchase another Box. And that’s what it’s all about for me. I have to purchase two different systems to fully experience the cars I’ll never get to, otherwise. Porsche monopolies is a whole new reason to dislike or hate EA/MS/Forza. Come on Sony… it’s not like EA does not produce games for the PS. And if T10 is somehow interfering with Sony/PD Porsche rights?… I would understand any hatocracy towards them. Peace be with us all…
Wtf how is Forza a ripoff of GT, they’re 2 totally different games, they feature very different tracks as well as cars, physics, and graphics.
In the interest of truth, the original Forza Motorsport is a GT clone; Turn 10 have even admitted as much.
Past that however, people will grasp onto anything to smite another game because they feel it threatens them or whatever nonsense it may be.
Forza is an amazing racing series, Gran Turismo is an amazing racing series. Both games can be great on their own merits, and if you ignore one over the other then you are hilariously ignorant.
That’s car sounds done properly in R3E. I say car sounds & not engine sounds, as there’s far more than just the engine note involved in all the sounds a car makes when being driven in anger. PD need to think more in terms of car sounds than engine sounds if they really wanna move forward in GT6.
+1 Hope that works out. ;)
Right on the money VBR. It’s a much more total package of sounds compared to any car in GT…and the game is free!
Yup, that GT sounds great. Still… not an expert on such things, but I would like to see and hear the “replay” of the GT’s laps. This way I can get a sense of what they’ve done with the engine sounds as an environmental background from a spectator’s point of view. Something no driving or racing sim/arcade, including the GT series, has hit the mark IMO.
It is a little easier to get such succulent car sounds when you have 1/100 the cars to deal with. And all race cars to boot, so the wild diversity you have to cover in countless street machines isn’t involved. Even Forza 4 suffered, in spite of the fact that M$ hired out FOUR HUNDRED PLUS people to work on F4. One car, the car the camera is on, has good if inaccurate sounds, the rest are generic.
Incredible sounds require fewer cars, a huge team, and/or a system with lots of ram to hold a lot of high quality samples. We might have to live with some “standard” samples in GT7 because the car list will grow yet again, and with four muffler types alone to record samples of, even if there are “only” 600 cars, that’s 2400 recording sessions.
Want that job, and then get yelled at on a message board about it? I bet you do. ;D
Tenacious D, that’s not even to mention the 4 different camera angles and the sound renderings for those. That 2400 is actually 9600.
None of your excuses cut it TenD sorry. Your argument is basically that the biggest and most successful car gaming franchise in the history of the world can’t do something that one of the smallest can do. You realize Kaz spends more $$$ on his personal cars than R3E’s entire budget right? Okay exaggerating but you haven’t got a leg to stand on. It’s supposed to be the little guys saying, “We don’t have the budget PD does”, not the other way around.
That GTPlanet Picture of The Week of the Lexus LFA looks stunning! Haters gonna hate but I thought GTPlanet is for things on Gran Turismo and nothing else? Ho hum…. Nothing wrong with some news on other Sims I suppose.
Yeah I think it’s nice to read about other racing games as well. Especially looking forward to Project CARS. The graphics in that game looks unbelievable.
And the sound of that Ford above was sick. Went through my spine and down to my … well, let’s just say I think something moved.
I believe that Xbox Holden race car will be competing at Bathurst this weekend
What’s an R13b? does the R just stand for rotary? I’ve never heard one called that
I think this quote from wiki may help with your inquiry :
*The 13B is the most widely produced engine. It was the basis for all future Mazda Wankel engines, and was produced for over 30 years. The 13B has no relation to the 13A. Instead, it is a lengthened version of the 12A, having 80 mm (3.1 in) thick rotors. Each rotor had a displacement of 654 cc, for a total of 1308 cc displacement in the engine.
In the United States, the 13B was available from 1974 through 1978 and was then retired until the 1984 RX-7 GSL-SE. It disappeared from the US market again in 1995, when the last US-spec RX-7s were sold. The engine was continually used in Japan from 1972’s Mazda Luce/RX-4 through 2002’s RX-7.*
Rewind updated with VisionRacer VR3 and Logitech G27 contest.
Thanks for posting that, T-12, I entered as soon as I saw it, on the slim chance I could replace my broken wheel.
I just hope I don’t win and find out they won’t send it to England or something. :nervous:
I have a serious problem, I can’t buy xbox one just for fm5 even though I want to, so badly. I guess I’ll just wait out that “a year or two” statement that PD made. But knowing them, it’s probably going to be three years ^^;
Even 3 years is not that long to wait! GT7 on the PS4 will blow most other games away, so the longer it takes, the better it will be!
It has been almost 3 years since GT5 came out and I (along with HEAPS of others) am still playing and enjoying it! Of course, I am a little impatient and eagerly await the release of GT6 because of PD’s inclusion of Bathurst, but GT5 is still fun to play!
Thanks for putting up the video Jordan. Absolutely amazing sound!!! Are you listening Kaz?
Waahhhh, this is a gt forum. Waaaahhh, how dare u post other sims. Waaaahhh, u suk.
Love making fun of the haters.
Anyway, another great post.
Waahhh I love making fun of the haters, Waaaaaaaaaaaaaahh, Love making fun of people making fun of the haters.
When in actual fact, you are effectively doing the same thing.. hating on haters.
Just to let you know, the GT in GTPlanet does not stand for GT1, GT2, GT3, GT4, GT5 or GT6! It just stands for Gran Tourismo or Gran Touring or Grand Tourer – a type of race or car found in the real world!
There is even an album by The Cardigans called Gran Turismo released in 1998! If any of the authors wish to talk about music, that is their prerogative!
LOL@RACECAR.
Doesn’t look like the OP is hating on haters at all, just having a chuckle or two at their expense.
T-12s intentions were pure though, when he initially merged Forza and GT news together in the Rewind. It’s consistent with the fact gtplanet as a whole promotes other gaming titles, but like RACECAR said some just can’t handle that.
@Magic Ayrton
Except I’m making fun of the people who constinantly moan at the idea that something other the GT being posted as opposed to complaining about it so no, I’m not “Hating on the haters” as you put it. Quite a big difference there.
