GTPlanet Weekly Rewind: The Next Generation

For those of you still scratching your pretty little heads, there was no Weekly Rewind last week. How could there have been with all of the news coming in left, right and sideways regarding the GT6 reveal at last week’s 15th Anniversary Celebration at Silverstone? The Rewind would have been a tight squeeze in the midst of that onslaught of news.

This week I’ll be doing things a little bit differently, steering away from the established formula as it were, because all we’re going to be talking about this week are Gran Turismo 6, the Xbox One reveal, and the upcoming Forza Motorsport 5. There’s a lot to get through in this week’s installment so you’d better grab some popcorn and your favorite drink and get comfortable.

Gran Turismo 6. The next chapter in the franchise is going to be released on the PS3 around the same time the PS4 is going to launch and many have been left wondering whether or not this was a smart move on the behalf of not only Polyphony Digital by Sony as well, and the answer to those questions of possible confusion is yes, it was a smart move. Why? Because there’s a far larger install base on the PS3 there’s going to be with the PS4 at launch. Yes, Gran Turismo would move consoles just as any other in-house blockbuster title but it’s a risk neither pair was willing to take.

Do I agree with it? Yes and no, but most of all, yes. The install base is there with the PS3 and to then essentially forego that install base wouldn’t make a whole worth of sense when you’ve considered the additional expense of an entirely new platform. On the other hand, Gran Turismo has never been a launch title for the three Playstation platforms and there’s nary a doubt in my mind that it’d move a significant number of PS4 consoles at launch.

Combine that with the fact that regardless of how much GT6 improves, it’s still going to be working within the confined limitations of the PS3’s hardware which basically amounts to there’s never going to be any leaps and bounds advancements. Once all of that is taken to light the arguments for both sides of the coin become far more interesting.

GT6 is going to bring with it not only some new vehicular faces, but a complete overhaul to the game’s physics model. Partnerships with KW Automotive and Yokohama Rubber will bring the franchise to a new plateau of realism, something I am most assuredly looking forward to.

GTPlanet Picture of the Week

The first break in this week’s Rewind. Don’t worry all of the familiar faces are going to be present, so you’ll have plenty of time to catch your breath  and take in the sights.

Back to business, this week’s fantastic image comes to us courtesy of SMfan and features the spectacular hindquarters of the Ferrari SP1 (Special Project No. 1) designed by Leonardo Fioravanti. The body of the SP1 shares a likeness to the Fioravanti F100.

Have a suggestion for next week’s featured image? Drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Picture of the Week” and fill it out with your two choices and they’ll be featured in upcoming Rewinds. NOTE: You cannot elect your own work.

GT Academy: Champions Race

If you follow the prospects of the GT Academy and it’s winners at some point you may have wondered who the fastest graduate is, well that’s finally being put to the test.

In this Champions Race which combines both the real and virtual worlds, the key is to find out who the fastest GT Academy driver is. Would it persuade you to watch if you were told the drivers are doing laps around Silverstone in GT6? Granted, you’re not going to see full laps nor are you going to get anything more than a taste of what’s to come, but the fact is there.

GTPlanet Weekly Race Series (WRS) Week 118: Roma 300 GT

You’re going to to need something to take off the edge while you patiently await the arrival of Gran Turismo 6, are you not? That’s why this week’s challenge is all about Rome and the GT300 class Subaru Impreza: a vehicle new to the WRS. Take the twists and turns as quickly as you can, and use any runoff to your advantage because by the sounds of things you’re going to have your hands full with this purebred racer with a slight understeer bias.

What more do you need to know? Get out there and have some fun! Stop by the official thread here and remember that you NEED to be registered before officially participating in the WRS, and that can only be done by submitting a time for the official GTP Registry Qualifier.

You may recall a couple of weeks ago where I brought this WRS event to light, and with the actual F1 weekend looming about it’s time for a reminder, wouldn’t you say? But this isn’t just any old reminder, no, what I’m bringing to light now is the upcoming Grand Prix of Monaco live broadcast on Twitch.tv courtesy of oink, with live commentary. Highlights will be featured on his Youtube channel after the event has concluded.

So if you’re looking to see what goes on in the WRS because you’re still on the fence this will be the perfect opportunity to do so, and with that you might want to subscribe/follow oink’s channel for future broadcasts and videos.

Xbox One and Forza Motorsport 5

This is going to be Microsoft’s next generation offering, the Xbox One. It’s floating. Which means you just have to go out and purchase it once that’s possible, because who in their right mind wouldn’t want a levitating console that can play games?

Joking aside I’m actually rather excited for this, and without getting into a verbose display of techno-babble (which we all know I’m more than capable of doing without so much as batting an eye) I’ll tell you why: I’m intrigued by the possibilities. I’m a PC guy more than anything else but I’m well aware of the advantages a console possesses. Such as every single Xbox One is going to have the same hardware, the same limitations, and the same potential – meaning consoles are all the lowest and highest common denominator.

The presentation for the One was a bit TV-centric but I was never expecting a full blowout considering E3 is so close by, coupled with the fact that Microsoft had already curbed high expectations by announcing it was going to be a two-part reveal; one at this past Wednesday’s special event, and the last part at E3.

Even with it’s somewhat overwhelming focus on the TV capabilities of the console I’m already sold but it’s not because of anything relating to TV or how they’re making achievements better or streamlining the entire user interface, no the entire reason I’m sold on the One as a launch day purchase is entirely because of this…

http://youtu.be/vy_LDyfCANg

Forza Motorsport 5. Much like Gran Turismo, Forza had never been a launch title for the Xbox – that is until now. I was already excited for what might have been the day before the One’s reveal after coming across McLaren Automotive’s Facebook page and noticed their hinting at having some kind of presence during the event. You should also take notice of the opportunity to take a ride in the actual P1 supercar.

So we already know the all-new McLaren P1 is going to debut in the game, but what did I think of the announcement trailer? Well there wasn’t much to take from it as it was simply a teaser of things to come, however, from what little was shown we know three things: the McLaren P1 and F1 are in, Prague is a new city-track, and John Hindhaugh of Radio Le Mans apparently has some kind of involvement in the game. Everything else is borderline guesswork until things are elaborated on at E3.

Another tidbit that’s come to be known over the past 30+ hours is the Top Gear partnership will continue, but to what degree remains to be seen. E3 can’t come soon enough: more Xbox One and PS4 news, FM5, GT6, it’s all going to be a very not-having-any-money holiday season I fear.

There won’t be much for me to swoon over until E3 is said and done but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to talk about; speculation is apart of the fun and games so if you want to keep tabs on Forza Motorsport 5 you’ll definitely want to stop by the official forum for in-depth discussion!

Closing Thoughts

This week definitely strayed away from the winning formula, but you were already warned such was going to take place. Don’t worry because that formula will return next week and it’ll be like it never took a break.

Although it’s likely been noticed by now, there isn’t an official inductee for this week’s “Member of the Week” segment, however, because the Rewind was delayed last week we welcomed W3HS into the fraternity so you’ll definitely want to check out that interview and be sure to have yourself a shemming good time in the process!

So I’m sure some of you are wondering what my true preferences are when it comes to the heavy-hitters of console sim-racing nirvana, and the answer to that is simple: neither. I love them both. Yes, I grew up with Gran Turismo and because of it I’ve been introduced to manufacturers I’d never ever heard of until laying my hands on the game, but the same rings true for Forza. Both have their advantages, disadvantages, eccentricities, and utterly profound annoyances. It’s really just as simple as that.

Having said that I won’t pretend that I’m not slightly more excited for FM5 than I am for GT6, but that largely boils down to the possibilities of the new platform it’s being developed on.

Once again I forgot to mention that I’m on Twitter now. What was once going to be a bit of parody account (because I don’t use Facebook or Twitter for any reason whatsoever) has quickly turned into me using Twitter rather effectively. So, follow me and suggest all things Rewind-worthy from the comfort of your tablets, phones, or Skynet-linked computers. Remember, when the machines finally rise you’ll need someone to write pieces regarding the matter littered with Armageddon-y undertones and I can be just that guy! What were we talking about? Right, Twitter, so if you’ll follow me here the Rewind can be delivered to you in a timely fashion not seen since snail mail. Wait, that’s not the right thing to say!

You will be showered in Rewind, Seasonal Event and future article goodness courtesy of yours truly though so there’s that worth looking forward to – once I’ve bothered to get the thing up and running. It can also be used to suggest things for upcoming Rewinds, so that’s now two ways you all can keep me on my toes.

That’s all I’ve got for this week and you can rest assured that I’m looking forward to E3 with the best intentions, and I’m also going to announce this now: there will be another “Special Edition” Rewind the week of E3 that’s going to cover everything related to the PS4, Xbox One, GT6 and FM5 – oh, you’d better believe it.

Every week the Rewind’s title pays some form of respect to something related to pop culture, but this week’s title wouldn’t have been given a second glance given the circumstances. Did you even for one second think to yourself “Hey, you made a reference to the eighth generation of consoles and Star Trek in this week’s title; that’s two for the price of one”? I bet you notice it now, don’t you?

Until next week keep racing! Snake Eater!

Good article T-12. It’s led to some good entertaining reading in the comments section too.

well talking about the xbox 1, me and my friend made a bet……..the v=bet was to see if any Xbox lover would want the new Xbox one, so we went to school the next day (yes, im 13,still in school.dnt make fun of me) any way everyone in my class is an Xbox lover except for me(i’ll never know y) and the bet was that if ppl were more fond about the ps4 coming out (wich I thought would nvr happen) then he would have too get a ps4 one when it came out and if more ppl voted for the Xbox one then I would have to get an Xbox one once it comes out…………..well geuss wat!?!?!?!?!?!?out of all the ppl that loved Xbox more than playstation everyonethought that the Xbox one was crap and they voted for ps4!! And if u were kind enough who ever is reading this message I would like to hear from u about wat u think about the ps4 and Xbox one and give a vote!

    1. RESHIRAM5

Everyone in my school just judges Sony and MS by which has the best C.O.D games (I don’t even play out so I can’t judge) but most of them are going over the top and not going to get the next Xbox because of it’s name :/ I live in a weird world of gaming.

    2. Quakebass

^ Unfortunately, that’s how a large majority of the younger fanbases decide. CoD really isn’t that great of a game, at least not since CoD 4. It’s hardly changed or improved at all.

You need to judge a console by the hardware and software it offers, but a big thing that people miss or deny is the exclusive games. Sure, you can have amazing hardware, but what if another manufacturer has all of the cool games? They get sales, because people want the games.

It seems Halo may be going down the drain (which really saddens me… But we’ll see what 343 comes up with), CoD is finally getting boring for some people (I know it’s multi-platform, but they have better standings with Microsoft and seem to display all their new games on Xbox hardware), and then there’s GOW, and Forza (obviously there’s more, but I’m listing the major popular titles). Interestingly, Forza seems to be one of the more successful franchises on the Xbox right now – the others seem to be getting less attention from fans. Infamous and Uncharted still seem to have the audiences attention, and there’s new sequels coming for those games. Then there’s DriveClub and KillZone.

I’m thinking that the fanbases may be transferring to the PS4 now because of similar pricing, free online play, and maybe “better” or more “fresh” games. Especially if one was on Xbox the whole time, all sorts of “new” PS-exclusives can grab their attention, and the users can play with their friends without paying $60 a year.

  3. Nuuj

I’ve noticed that another GTP Member made the point that GT has released twice on each version of the Playstation:

GT and GT2 on the PS
    GT3 and GT4 on the PS2
    GT5 (and now GT6) on the PS3

I’m not sure if it’s intentionally made to be that way, but I’m pretty sure it is.. Having our next GT on the PS3 was a good move considering that these Next Gen Systems are not slated to do as well out of the gate as the PS3 and Xbow 360, and the wait for GT6 may have been much longer, there is no way they would have been able to bring it around on the PS4 at launch, not without it having a lot of recycled aspects–if you want a totally new, refresh-revamped GT (with no Standards and Cardboard and 2-D Backgrounds) you’ll have to give Polyphony a while, and wouldn’t be nice to have something to occupy the GT faithful until then?

My friends, I give you GT6..

Forza 5 will most likely be visually spectacular and blow away all with its content, and knowing the business side of Gaming these days, it may also mean GT6 won’t see the P1–but I’m fine with waiting to see what Kaz and Co will do, and happy to see what GT6 will offer..

  4. TeamCZRRacing

I can’t believe I’m saying this, being a longtime PlayStation diehard, but… Can’t we just treat the Xbox fans here with equanimity? Having all this hatred passing between the two sides is good for neither of them.

  5. SaintSaiya

Kaz please We also need more cadillacs and lincolns!!! The mks AWD ecoboost twin turbo and the lincoln Mkr RWD concept and the cadillac v series and many more!!

  6. Master_gamer438

“The highest rated Franchise in the last ten years”…from that FM5 trailer, Pretty sure The GT series was much higher. Players had a higher score, critics were less. The only feature that actually sounded good was the announcer, but I doubt for online. That’s all.

    1. FiftyBelowZero

Exactly. Turn 10 lied. GT has been higher rated, and Forza didn’t exist 10 years ago…

    2. DYLAN777-is-not

No forza did get higher ratings but all the reviews Ive ever seen were really biased and not professional at all. Id bet money that IGN was bribed or they are just the stupidest people on Earth.

    3. XxDARKRAIX

Or they were all from horizon. Which is from last year. It was a great game, what NFS should have been

    1. Terronium-12

I”m asking myself that same question right now.

I expected something remotely akin to intelligent discussion.

    2. RESHIRAM5

I think it is because of the Forzaplanet and GTplanet merge and there is no more News section solely on Forza and since Forza 5 is coming out on the Xbox One, it gives a good reason to talk about, just like how there was news on PS4.

  7. ScotteDawg

X-Box = Crap! I’ve heard a rumour that the new console has to be kept online for every second of every game – there will be no offline gaming! If that’s the case, X-Box owners are going to have to fork out a lot of money because of Microsoft’s “Pay to Play” scam!!!

    1. syntex123

I’ve actually heard it won’t be online at all time either, that would cause a lot of trouble. I will not get the new xbox. Sticking with my ps3 until GT6 or 7 is on ps4.

    2. ICEMAN_ZIDANE

Sony Consoles are for real gamers.
Xbox one is just a cheap entertainment box.

Sony showed us in the reveal show : games, specs
MS knew that their console isnt as powerful as the PS4, because of that they didn’t talked much about that. ->and because of that they give a high importance to the show itself, lights etc…

MS’s aim is to build a cheaper console (they hope for more sells) than the PS4. Because of that it will not (it isnt) be as powerful as the PS4.

Good console no importance on the show itself.
“Bad” console high importance on the show.
BTW it was a nice reveal of the xbox Menu and TV lol, We are gamers,, MS do u know PlayTv ??(released years ago)

    3. Terronium-12

What a well constructed comment, ZIDANE.

Did you know both the PS4 and Xbox One will be made out of plastic, thus invalidating your separation skew?

Did you also know that after the reveal there was a panel talking about the tech inside the One? Or even, there was a detailed screenshot during the presentation that outlined the One’s spec – in much of the same way Sony did in February.

The rest of what you’ve written is utter ridiculousness.

    4. AlexDug

Yes, Terronium, we are aware that specs of the Xbox One have been revealed. It is still subpar to what the PS4 has to offer, just look it up on IGN.

Also, what a well constructed last sentence in your response to ZIDANE. Don’t you think that as a member of GTPlanet’s staff you should show some class? Something you certainly aren’t doing right now.

    5. ICEMAN_ZIDANE

      You didnt understood it.

I know the specs of both consoles. Dou u know them too??

What Iam trying to say is that if you have a slower/less powerful console then you have to show the good parts of the console and push it with a good show. For example they just said .. 8gb Ram… but not if its gddr 1 2 3 … (later they said it)

Just a other example. Car companies never talk about the engines of their small cars, they talk about little features “gimmicks” ( for example conecting your phone to listen to music)
For example if you make a C 63 , the first think everyone will talk is the engine , conecting your phone is not important to talk about ..

      Do u understand now ?

    6. RESHIRAM5

Powerful consoles doesn’t always win the generation war.

It shouldn’t be about the Power or little features, it should be about the games. If a console doesn’t have enough games that interest me, I won’t buy it.

    7. Nuuj

The Xbox outsold the PS3 this Generation behind one major reason that overshadows most any others; most Xbox Owners had to buy multiple Systems due to the “Red Ring of Death”, while PS3 owners also have endured the “Yellow Light of Death” the ratio is not even close–either way I won’t be buying an Xbox, and I won’t be buying a PS4 either until I know that there won’t be any “( ) of Death” going on with it.. Happy wasting my life away on GT6 and GTAV (and any other good time sinking title) on the PS3 until a possible Slim PS4 releases..

    8. rocketcaron

Well, T12 is right ALL THE WAY here. You people just have short memories. I always bought both Sony AND MS consoles since the original XBOX and quite frankly, you can like one more than the other but thats where your arguments end.

I think a stupidly biased comment just does not deserves class…

  8. infamousphil

Thanks Terronium, good information to know.

Looking forward to GT6. It’s going to be a much improved 5. Too bad the guys at MS didn’t rethink the controller design. The first impression is a lasting one and those offset controller nipples are not for me. Hope, at least, they give us improved controller programming. Doubt it though.

  9. SCER

I’ll be gutted if the P1 doesn’t end up on GT6. It’s the most exciting car there’s been for a while.

  10. sideXside3wide

I believe gt6 on ps4 or gt7 will be coming sooner than we think, being the ps4 is easy to develop for

    1. TeamCZRRacing

They’d have to rebuild the engine for GT6. PS3 was based off of the Cell architecture, while the PS4 is based off of x86-64. They’re completely different beasts.

    2. biftizmo

I heard this kind of rubbish years and years before…..are you not listening to what Sony have been repeatedly saying recently…forward compatibility is top of the list for them….evaluation of the games we have…more forward thinking is needed round here

  11. researchALLwars

“basically amounts to there’s never going to be any leaps and bounds advancements.”

    In what respect? Graphics? Physics?

C’mon T12! The problems with Gran Turismo do not reside there. Super-uber processing power is not required to fix the dumpy A.I., cramped career mode, lack of events, poor competition vehicle choices, clunky UI, lifeless raceday atmosphere, poor online matchmaking, lack of leaderboards, server issues creating waterbug races online, etc. etc…

Why did you make that ‘red herring’ statement?

    1. Terronium-12

I liked the part where you went on a tangent based on something I hadn’t even confirmed; conjecture by any other word.

But to answer your question: No, that’s not what I meant whatsoever.

    2. Roxa_p

I’m a very BIG fan of Gran turismo, but i’ve got to agree on the problems you mention. My hope’s fot GT6 is half of the problems being fixed. Until now whe know a little bit. Lets wait untill E3 for some new major announcement.. or not?

    3. researchALLwars

Oh there are no tangents here, my good man. If 1/3 of the things I mentioned were to be forcefully resolved, would you not agree that PD has achieved a leap or a bound? I’d say we’d be looking at a leap, bound, a hop, and a skip! GT could move forward by light years with some very simple improvements in the decision-making department. On PS3. Heck, even a simple Event Creator could’ve turned GT5 from dust collector (and thats not a “engine sounds” joke) to PS3 cooker with a quick wave of Kazunori’s hand.

Anyone who was dead-set on GT6 being a PS4 release was basically fooling themselves. Not to mention off-target with their desires. “Oh I want the cars to be MOAR beautiful.” What?!

^Not saying you fall squarely into that category, T12… but you may have had a toe in there. ; )

    4. Terronium-12

In my opinion? It’s hard to consider GT6’s current direction a leap or bound – let alone a hop, skip or a jump when it’s competitor has already embraced those mechanics since 2006.

It’s great for the series and I’m definitely looking forward to it, but it’s nothing more than a case of “what should have been” in my eyes.

    5. biftizmo

T-12 ..have you not seen Kaz recent interview on PSN just now…I’m afraid he contradicts you totally ….

    6. Pit Crew

Wow… I feel where your coming from T-12 good job. despite the hateration flowing your way.

    7. researchALLwars

I am not hating on anyone! I just take issue with the idea that GT6 cannot see major improvements “because it’s stuck on the PS3”. Thats a very narrow view of the situation.

Now, there are many *other reasons that GT6 may not be improved to any degree worth shouting about. I think a much more relevant question could be: Has Polyphony shown us anything over the last 8 years that makes you think GT6 will be improved enough to make it fun, constructive, and replayable?

We all may have slightly different answers. Mine would be: Ehhhh there have been glimpses. Some of the updates over the life of GT5 were obvious improvements that were asked by this community. Just enough to give a fool like me hope.

    8. Pit Crew

Partnering with KW and Yokohama and the new lighting feature are good starts but since I haven’t had any hands on time with GT6, I’ll be fair and let my true opinion rest till the demo becomes available.

I truly feel GT6 is the GT5 Kaz wanted but the pattern with all the GT titles seems consistent as 1-4 all added features the previous title in series didn’t have. GT5 was a hiccup for PD, yet despite it’s shortcomings I still play regularly, thankful that I used my 2 years 7months of ownership to build relationships that continue to feed my fun factor.

    9. biftizmo

So there you have it the biggest leap and bound in GT5 was online playability and social aspects…so yes massive improvement between GT4 and 5….you must agree..

  12. gt4viper

I for one am glad that GT6 is coming to PS3,
The PS3/XBOX360 generation is a great one, one I will be using for probably the next three years. Xbox 360 has Forza 4, a very complete racing sim that shows what these consoles can really do; the PS3 deserves the same. As much as we love GT5, it has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese; so I’m glad PD Is giving us a proper send off.

  13. HKSBro92

This fall is looking great for racing fans. Need for Speed Rivals (Ferrari finally returns to NFS after like 8 years), GT6, DriveClub and Forza 5! Woo!

    1. sangdude82

Yeah, this year will be so awesome for racing game fans :D Why was Ferrari absent from NFS for that long?

  14. qgroundhog

Very excited for both games. I don’t compare forza to gran turismo. I am just in love with both of them!

  15. JackC8

Don’t understand why people are always harping on how GT6 should have been on the PS4. It took Polyphony Digital 5 years to make GT5 on the PS3. Do you really think they could have made a game for the PS4 in 3 years? Reality check already.

    1. pnbr0014

the reason they took so long in the 1st place was because of how hard the PS3 architecture is to develop for. now they understand it so they brought out gt6 in a shorter time.. ps4 is x86 architecture so it will be a piece of cake to develop for. i’m looking for a gt7 in the 1st quarter of the ps4 cycle. so like in the 1st 2-3 years of release

    2. biftizmo

It took years to put the network delivery system together so we can play all old and new carnations of GT on one platform..GT6 is now ready to go well into PS4 existence with plenty more content they have built up…

  16. TokoTurismo

I’m to this day still happy that GT6 is coming to PS3. GT6 will show its true power that I await to see. :)

    1. RESHIRAM5

I’ve notice Pokemon and GT pull off similar tricks and shocks (to me).

      1. Catch/Get ’em all.
      2. Even though there is the 3DS/PS4 they’re released/releasing a game for the DS/PS3.

    1. MuoNiuLa

@Justin: Agreed. But unfortunately, I do not see myself getting a Xbox One or Forza 5 for 1-2 years if the current Fanatec wheels aren’t compatible.

  17. Steph290

Any self-respecting Scifi fan should have noticed the StarTrek reference the second they loaded GTPlanet’s home page, lol. I did slowly sift through the rewind as if I was walking through a minefield, making sure there were no spoilers tho. Not the biggest fan of this nextgen StarTrek, but I think I may want see it. As always, great write-up!

  18. Longa23

I have a Xbox 360 but the Xbox One is a Spying box….
When its true, that the One all what you do is recording then i dont buy it…!!!
