GTPlanet Weekly Rewind: The Virtual Divide

Evora S

Coming off the high of last week’s Jalopnik Film Festival is no easy feat and I was aware of this challenge the entirety of last week, but the problem now is whether or not I actually want to come off of such a high, and the answer is relatively simple. No.

With so much news having come out of the last two weeks it’s been relatively hectic here at GTPlanet but as always we’re on top of things bringing you the news you want to read. With that said the advent of last week’s Tokyo Game Show brought with it nothing new to GT’s core audience and this could be resultant of several factors all currently residing in the unknown zone; a zone many of us don’t like venturing into, but with all things interesting it’s a necessary evil for the time being. The trick is to not leave one lingering in such a zone for too long, which in the end results in nothing more but a waning interest.

There’s the possibility that nothing new being revealed at GT6 was a very last minute decision, which, to my understanding isn’t exactly out of the normal swing of things for PD, but fret not because there’s still plenty of opportunities primed for the newest Gran Turismo 6 revelations, and we’ll be there reporting it as always.

Speaking of news, and this will be talked about in full later on, Forza Motorsport 5 is finally beginning to come out of it’s “unknown zone” and while that’s the exact reason my interest has waned since its unveiling at Microsoft’s E3 conference, my ears (and eyes) are open.

There’s plenty to get through in this week’s Rewind so let’s get a move on, shall we?

GTPlanet Picture of the Week

9863315786_d090afd097_b

I saw this and knew right away what this week’s featured image was going to be. I’m a huge science-fiction buff and this picture checks all the necessary boxes for me. Courtesy of CCShaft7, this image features Special Stage Route X around 2500 A.D.

It’s an incredibly visual piece and illicit’s thoughts of Oblivion (the movie staring Tom Cruise, not the Elder Scrolls) and Bungie’s upcoming Destiny; more importantly and perhaps more to the point is that it embodies going on a journey that no one else dares to.

Have a suggestion for next week’s featured image? Drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Picture of the Week” and fill it out with your two choices and they’ll be featured in upcoming Rewinds. NOTE: You cannot elect your own work.

Meet The Staff (And Kazunori Yamauchi!)

52i8uo

While this picture was meant to go up with last week’s JFF report, it’s never really a bad time to see for yourselves what some of GTPlanet’s staff members look like. Taken last Wednesday with the backdrop of the 1966 #6 Ford GT40, 1969 Jaguar E-Type, 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and a 1969 Shelby Cobra lies us, from left to right: Jordan, Kazunori, Kyle (SlipZtrEm) and myself.

GTPlanet Weekly Race Series (WRS) Week 136: SPF 136

wrstitlestimetrials2

It’s time to break out the sunblock because you’ll be revisiting one of my personal favorite tracks in the world and F1 attraction, Autodromo Nazionale Monza, and what better way to visit a track in Italy than in a topless Ferrari?

A fantastic combo with one of Ferrari’s more daring designs as of late and as usual the sector times are shaping up rather fast and with a maximum of 476 horses powering the rear wheels you’d better be on your best behavior around this fast-moving track.

Take in the last of the late summer Mediterranean sun in this smooth driving 7-speed convertible. This V-8 powered prancing pony packs some punch with smooth acceleration equal to that of the fabulous Ferrari F430. The standard carbon-ceramic brakes are definitely put to the test on this circuit with it’s long and heavy brake zones.

You’ll only experience the first 6 gears during your solo laps so if you want to try out the final gear, join us online on Oct 2nd where 7th will serve as an overdrive, perfect for draft induced overtakes. Enjoy another racing combo courtesy of Italy, but don’t forget to apply sunscreen, SPF 136 recommended.

Gran Turismo 6 to Feature KW’s “7-post” Test System

GT6 is looking better by the day and today is no different, as reported earlier in the week, the upcoming title is set to feature advanced suspension tweaking by way of KW’s 7-post testing environment.

And it doesn’t quite end there either as we now know a little bit more about the revamped career mode and Top Gear’s involvement in the upcoming game.

“Designed to spotlight the hundreds of drivable cars in “Forza Motorsport 5”, the all-new career mode is organized into eight leagues, with each league covering a special “genre” of car (such as supercars, vintage, sports compacts, and more). Each set of career events will feature a video introduction with commentary provided by the hosts of the UK version of the worldwide smash automotive entertainment show, Top Gear.

Unlike traditional racing game career modes — where players move from low-performance cars and are forcefully guided into more powerful cars over time — the career mode in “Forza Motorsport 5” gives players the power to choose their own paths through the career. Players will have the choice to participate in whichever career mode events they like, provided they own a car that meets an event’s requirements, and can return to those events as many times as they like, all the while earning credits and experience as they go.”

New vehicles will be revealed every Wednesday leading up to the launch of the Xbox One and the release of Forza Motorsport 5, so you rest assured the same will ring true with the Weekly Rewind’s Forza mention until then as well.

GTPlanet Member of the Week

monatsendemotw1ssdg

Once again it’s time to acknowledge a member of the GTPlanet community; a member who has stood out among the hundreds of thousands of members already here, both old and new alike for all that they’re worth and all they’ve contributed to the community.

Over the past three weeks we’ve inducted two Junior members of the community back-to-back for two consecutive weeks, and with there being no formal mention in last week’s Rewind it’s now time to induct yet another member, and surprisingly it’s another Junior member. Proving it isn’t always about the tried and true for the third consecutive week.

So without further ado let’s welcome this week’s newest inductee in the madhouse that is the Member of the Week hall of fame, Monatsende! The interview is now live and provides the usual share of laughter, but more importantly provides the medium of getting to know your fellow GTP members a little bit better. For the whole kit-n-kaboodble be sure to stop by the official Member of the Week thread.

Anyone you’d like to see recognized as the Member of the Week? Drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Member of the Week” and fill it out with your choices and they’ll be featured in upcoming Rewinds. NOTE: You cannot nominate yourself.

GTPlanet Vehicle of Week

8263255161_c45581cdd7

Making its debut at the 1967 Turin Motorshow, the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is based on the Autodelta Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 racing car. This car, designed by Franco Scaglione and built by Carrozzeria Marazzi was as an attempt to make Alfa Romeo’s racing technology available to the general public. It was the most expensive automobile for sale to the public in 1968 at a cost of $17,000. This may not seem like much at all by today’s standards, however, in 1968 the average automobile cost was $2,822.

The 33 Stradale is unique in it being the first production vehicle to utilize dihedral doors and features windows that seamlessly curve upward into the roof of the vehicle. Each of the 18 33 Stradales built are all built by hand meaning each one differs from the others.

The race-bred all aluminum 2.0L V8 bore no relation to Alfa Romeo’s previous mass-produced mainstream efforts. The engine produced 230 horsepower in road trim and 270 horsepower in race trim, however, once again contributing to the fact that every Stradale was built by hand, power levels varied as well as the amount of RPM.

GTPlanet Tune of the Week

85jr

This wee’s featured tune goes hand-in-hand with this past Wednesday’s newest seasonal event challenges in GT5. Featuring the 1986 Toyota MR2 1600 G-Limited tuned to exhibit its prowess in 450PP trim, the only concessions you’ll have to make are the tires and a bit of ballast. What’s racing without a challenge every now and again?

Victory is the name of the game as usual and if it’s a deserving victory that you’e after then you’ll want to stop by and see the tune for yourself.

Exactly like the Picture and Vehicle of the Week features, if you have any suggestions for the upcoming Rewinds be sure to drop me a private message, entitle it “GTPlanet Tune of the Week” and let me know. NOTE: You cannot elect your own work.

Motor Trend: Head 2 Head!

GTPlanet Photomode Competitions

9961948316_838ea96000_o

In Week 148 of the Standard and Advanced competitions you are to put your best foot forth and show the community just how seriously you take your in-game photography. All you need to know is as follows:

Week 148, Standard: Cheap Fun vs. Expensive Ruin – “Choose a car that’s either cheap or expensive. If you choose a cheap one, go for a drive and have as much fun as you can! With an expensive one though, you don’t want to smash it up so you’ll just have to photograph it parked up.”

Week 148, Advanced 2.0: Expression Session – “For this week I thought it’s time to get a little more expressive and utilize the often neglected Panning Mode 1. I sometimes like to use this mode to spice things up and find is can create interesting results that showcase a more raw speed and energetic and word of the day’expressive’ feel. So get out to your track of choice and give us all some Panning Mode 1 brilliance. For best results I suggest keeping a low shutter speed, ideally 1/125sec or 1/60sec. So there you have it hope you have fun!

Here’s a few examples to get you thinking. (If they help at all.)
Example 1 Example 2 Example 3 Example 4

For all of the relevant information pertaining to this week’s challenges be sure to stop by here and here.

Closing Thoughts

It has been a fairly relaxed week here and as a result I don’t have too much in mind to mindlessly gab about. I will say after having written out what’s coming to Forza Motorsport 5 I think my interest is slowly returning to where it was months ago, but it will probably take a considerable amount at this point as I’m long past jaded.

I just remembered AMD’s GPU 2014 Product Showcase conference in Hawaii yesterday and there were a couple of things mentioned that interested me a great deal, and those things being GenAudio, AMD’s own TrueAudio, Mantle, and of course their new line of graphic cards. I won’t get into specifics as I’m still going over most of it myself but there is some truly interesting stuff on the horizon for us PC guys.

I’d talk about Formula 1 but Vettel is winning again which means the front end of things are, well, boring, and his only immediate threat, Fernando Alonso, is driving a dog of a car that he has to perform above and beyond in to get to second place. The season isn’t over just yet so things could make a turn for the better or the absolute worse. With that said the last two or three races have been relatively boring with sparks of action toward the very end and it really has nothing to do with Seb winning repeatedly, well, the Belgian Grand Prix wasn’t helped by that fact. I don’t even want to think about 2014. At all.

Now a message from our sponsor, me:

While you’re salivating at the very thought of Gran Turismo 6 finding itself into your PlayStation 3 this coming December why not take the time to become a full-fledged member of our wonderful community. It’s free and we have cake! Okay, we don’t have cake (the cake is and always will be a lie, remember this!) but we do have a strong community and we’re always talking about something interesting. If you aren’t already a member you should join today and maybe you can work out a patented antidote for “Lying Cake Syndrome”. Seriously, it’s been years since I’ve had cake.

My shameless Twitter plug has also returned!

Once again I forgot to mention that I’m on Twitter now. What was once going to be a bit of parody account (because I don’t use Facebook or Twitter for any reason whatsoever) has quickly turned into me using Twitter rather effectively. So, follow me and suggest all things Rewind-worthy from the comfort of your tablets, phones, or Skynet-linked computers. Remember, when the machines finally rise you’ll need someone to write pieces regarding the matter littered with Armageddon-y undertones and I can be just that guy! What were we talking about? Right, Twitter, so if you’ll follow me here the Rewind can be delivered to you in a timely fashion not seen since snail mail. Wait, that’s not the right thing to say!

You will be showered in Rewind, Seasonal Event and future article goodness courtesy of yours truly, so there’s that worth looking forward to once I’ve bothered to get the thing up and running. It can also be used to suggest things for upcoming Rewinds, so that’s now two ways you all can keep me on my toes.

As I’ve said, it was a relatively relaxed week with things back to normal but you’ve finally been able to put a face to at least two of GTPlanet’s own members of staff and on that note it’s time to bring this week’s Rewind to an end. Until next week, keep racing!

For more photos like the picture of the week photo, you should look up GTGraphics. They are a team of graphic designers from Germany that make stuff that should really suit you Terronium. (or anyone else with a science-fiction interest). their pictures are also available as wallpapers for Windows 7 and 8.

  2. Prisoner747

I just want to say thank you to Terronium-12. The rewinds are great and I really appreciate the bringing together of the Gran Turismo and Forza culture, even despite the apparent resistance. These are two of my favorite series and it’s great to see that (to a certain extent) we can all just get along.

  3. Swagger897

Well that’s just great… we finally get the R-18 Ultra,

T10 gets the e-Tron Quattro…. Way to go PD… Just pony up from Nissan and add their Zeod. Ask them pleaase to make that an exclusive car..

  4. Mr C5 Z06 Vette

Glad to see that FM5 has a more realistic and less arcadey physics engine so now we wont have to worry about a front drive car going into 4 wheel drifts in high speed corners. In FM4 whenever I play at my cousin’s house I somehow seem to defy the laws of physics and throw an ff car into a drift without using the parking brake and it has me very, very confused.

    1. Swagger897

      @MuoNiula

WHAT? you must be crazy. The game acts as if its 1×10^84 psi of downforce on every inch of the car.. It couldnt get much closer to a NFS game

    2. MuoNiuLa

You guys must have broken copies of FM4 because it doesn’t feel like NFS at all to me. And if FM4 is arcade, then GT5 is no better. There’s a reason why PD put in a lot of work into the tire, suspension, and aerodynamic models for GT6.

    3. Swagger897

when I first played it at my friends house, my reaction was that the cars are so sluggish that is impossible to make them turn, and when they did they just kept going and going and going and never stopped until you would have to do a manuever similar in gt5 called over correction to stop the over steer. In gt5, lets say at fuji, if you are turning in at turn 4 and then let go of the wheel or stick, the cars tires will instantly snap forward and you will go forward. In forza, If i were to do the same, the car would continue to turn right until I corrected it by turning left and then it would go forward..

Not sure how you can disprove something like that. The only thing I can truly say is lets wait and see..

    1. Amac500

F1 license ain’t happening so that car won’t either. If PD ever got an F1 license the FIA would take such a large percentage that PD would have no money to give is anything else. For that reason I hope an F1 license doesn’t happen.

  5. Roflwaffle

Its pretty depressing that the vehicle of the week most likely won’t be in Gt6 and I can’t see it ever in the Gt series…

  6. Mr C5 Z06 Vette

Hey T-12 you got a typo its the number 27 andretti autosport car of my fellow canadian James Hinchcliffe not number 28. Anyways great rewind as always

  7. Blood*Specter

“Outlaw” modeled Porsches and updated Ruff’s in GT6? Not sure why but I have a feeling something might be changing.
    OR NOT………………………………………

  8. Lococurling

I can’t believe the F12 is only about a second faster than the manual gearbox corvette or even that porsche.
It is much more powerful and has an incomparable gearbox.
Looks like the driver didn’t push it so hard.
    But it’s just a supposition…

  9. Zuel

I’ve done a little research on Forza as a whole and I’m really impressed on how far Forza has come, not in the sense of customizing but in the area of drivability. The physical aspect is there though from what I’ve read it’s on pair to Gran Turismo 4 as to the physical aspect, I haven’t had a chance to test it myself but when I do I’m sure I will enjoy. The car list is nice as well, no repeats which is pleasing to see. And I must say if that picture of Silver Stone is in game, Brenda had a baby.

The photo of the week is outstanding, remind a little of Cowboy Bebop.

  10. Efiv12

Good job, great weeks worth of news. Could someone please tell me the attraction with half ton 4 wheel drive trucks in these games?

    1. infamousphil

A seperate tab would be great, Terronium. Vehicles or anything else of the week, from Forza, on GTPlanet confounds me. Cohabitation of the two communities is interesting to me because I play both. But as I cruise through GTP’s pages, on my phone, cain’t avoid the initial giddy feeling when juicy cars, like the Alfa 33, make an appearance here only to be reminded that it ain’t Gran Turismo.

  11. Tenacious D

    1987 RUF CTR Yellowbird

Hmm… have T10 spent so much on Forza 5 that once again, they can’t justify the suitcases of monies to EA for the Porsche license?? Or is ssssommmmethiiiinnnng ellssssssse going on behind the scenes…

    1. SavageEvil

EA stifles competitions buy using exclusive licenses. They are mildly innovative at best, check out their slew of NFS games in recent years and count how well they use the Porsche license they have a stranglehold on. PD nor Turn 10 want to pay through the nose just to include one manufacturer, only us people can sway Porsche to do something about EA abuse of their license in gaming.
Ruf’s are amazing by the way, just wished that PD and Turn 10 would get every last Ruf made put into the games. It’s not a Porsche but it performs like one and often times outdoes them outright. One day Porsche will grace driving games without the corporate kung fu of EA and others of their ilk.

Side note I actually spotted that GT40 that Sunday Jalopnik was going on it was parked around the corner near the Holland Tunnel, that car looks sick in real life you just want to oogle it continuously until someone tells you to take a photo it will last longer.

    2. HKSBro92

@savage you lucky bastard. I take the Holland tunnel almost everyday lol I did see the new Jag F type the other day in the tunnel…looks sick.

  12. Chippy569

Interesting that they’ve got Reto Miesl’s old hill climb 190E on that chassis dyno. He’s had that car for sale for a few months now and I think is driving something else this season (coverage in the usa is, well, spotty at best). I wonder how old the photo is.

    1. SavageEvil

That’s a hillclimb car? That thing looks like a DTM spec car from the early 90’s looking at the ground clearance it has, were hillclimbs streets instead of dirt like the old days? I would love to have that thing in GT6 as well as it looks sweet.

  13. Terronium-12

The Member of the Week interview has gone live and the Photomode Competition challenges for the week have been added!

  14. Deko Wolf-GTPT

I’m not trying to be funny, but that shot of the EVO X in Forza, the overall design of the EVO front bumper looks a bit weird. Is it just me? Maybe it’s because I’m used to seeing that car in real life and in other games.

    1. TokoTurismo

No, you’re not the only. :) The Evo X in Forza is missing those little foglights. The front and the tail lights looks a bit off too imo.

    2. Tenacious D

This is why PD needs to outsource… oh wait.

Actually, if they don’t fix that, this is why I’m not bothered when someone enthusiases about T10’s incredible car models. Their quality control team seems to spend all their time playing the game, and forgetting that quality thing. What’s worse, if they contracted out for this, they spent even MORE money for flawed models. Every game, there are issues with unsymmetrical cars, bodykits which fit strangely, surfaces which don’t work right with the Livery Editor… the usual Microsoft product, something that feels like a beta, or rushed like GT5 every game.

    3. FuzzyFassbender

What’s the difference, a car model slightly off or the car’s sound slightly off – neither GT or FM is perfect. Everyone justifies what is important to them or which series/platform they support. FM has been too good for me to not want to own (I have GT also).
      Next gen here I come!

    4. TokoTurismo

Why does something tell me you feel offended? And who’s supporting which series and platform? It’s not like it’s a problem, to me, the car imo does feel a bit off.

    5. FuzzyFassbender

No, not offended in the least, it’s something I wouldn’t have noticed or care about. I enjoy GT Planet in general, and I am not surprised as it did start as a GT only site and GT brought me here, but the nit-picking if not GT gets tiring. I enjoy many virtual racing games, I guess I expect (at least hope) more from GT Planet.
Example, this weekly rewind… it adds some welcome FM news but the comments start immediately like “WTF, this is GT Planet”, like its an exclusive club. I guess there are those that like racing games and those that like only one.

    6. TokoTurismo

Oh alright, and I apologize if you thought I sounded serious. :) I’m happy for Forza to be apart of GTP’s Weekly Rewind news, because it deserve too. I do agree with you how things here starts to sound a bit off when it gets mention on the article though. There shouldn’t be just because of “GT” as the planet’s name. For me, I love both games because two of them are equal having cars, tracks and physics.

I wish there wasn’t war with the two of them. :(

    7. infamousphil

Not an expert on such things, but it appears that little touches such as fog/driving/reverse lights, license plate dimensions, driver position… are dependent on the country in which it was presented. I thought it was pretty cool that GT5 offered US, EU and or JP versions of the same model.

Being a Nissan/Nismo fan, the nomenclature of the 180, 200, and 240SXs don’t match the engine sizes in the given specs. It’s these kinds of discrepancies that cause me to question PD’s proof reader(s).

  15. Monatsende

I liked this part the most:

“So without further ado let’s welcome this week’s newest inductee in the madhouse that is the Member of the Week hall of fame, Monatsende! The interview has yet to go live so watch this space for the update.”

    Surprised and honoured.

    1. Tenacious D

Just… really not sure. Spending so much to support a monopoly doesn’t enthusia me – like how much a new wheel will cost, and then there are the issues which haunt every game. Will we be able to mute Jerry Claxon? ;P

Erm…. guess we’ll see when I can afford $800 – 1,000 US to once again plunk down on ONE GAME… jeepers…

  16. WingZeroCustom

Interesting stuff. That picture of the week is just plain sexy! ^_^ Wish I could make photo’s like that. T__T Sadly I have no clue how too. Oh well……… also the Motor Trend Head 2 Head was pretty fun to watch. Thanks for all of this man. Love these weekly rewinds. :)

  17. forzaturismo

Dear Mr Yamauchi President of PD, can you please take a look of This FM5 Video, and can you please make the engine sound of GT6 even better than FM5.
    Thank You mr Yamauchi.

    1. ScotteDawg

A little thing to remember here is the fact that FM5 will be on the XBone whereas GT6 will be on the PS3! Different sound cards, different programming, etc…

Also, GT6 will have 1200 cars (as well as DLC cars) and FM5 will not even have half that amount! Easier for Turn 10 to get the sounds…

    2. Allek

Next gen is gonna be great for Gran Turismo. From what we see and hear in this FM5 trailer, and taking GT’s fantastic car behavior one can just wonder what GT7 will be like…

    3. Tenacious D

The XBone has 16 times the system ram of PS3. That’s a lot of room for unique samples. Even the 360 can’t hold all the sounds T10 wanted to put in Forza 4, so the bot cars have generic samples. If you want GT6 to sound like Forza 5 or a PC sim, you might be disappointed. As ScotteDawg rightly points out, it’s easier to do sound work for less than half the cars. But as with all things GT, we’ll see.

So basically, the sounds for GT6 will not be much improved over GT5. Well, not yet anyway.

When GT7 comes out on the PS4 (which will make the XBone look – comparatively – like a digital watch), the sounds should be a lot better than at the moment!

Have patience! It’s only 2 years away… (Personally, 3 years would make more sense financially)

      “Like a digital watch”?

The disparities between the two are nowhere near that significant.

I reread your comment and it seems you’re saying the visual representation for GT7 will make the Xbox One look like a digital watch, or at least FM6. My original comment stands.

Well if people asked for it instead of options that weren’t need then maybe we would have had it. Some time people think off the handle instead of really thinking about what is need. For example, look at the way GT 5 is played now then you can fill in the blanks. The casual player need to migrate over to Forza and allow GT to follow the core racing. I feel the casual player killed GT 5 in so many was. To many un-thoughtful things were added in my opinion. Hopefully GT 6 doesn’t follow the same path GT 5 went down.

And custom license plates are what is really needed? Perhaps you’re playing the wrong game…

I’m not saying it’s a bad idea but there are plenty of greater priorities

Actually, personalised plates are a good idea! For example, if you’re in a room with one or more people that have the same car in the same colour, the number plate can have your PS3 ID on it to set you apart! Or you set it to have what you want on it, but you can only do it once, it covers ALL cars and there can be no bad words, OR you can have the logo of your favourite gaming website – eg. GTPlanet – with your PS3 ID or initials on it…

I like the idea of gamer tags on the plates to identify players. Custom plates in general would be sweet. The obvious would be a full livery editor. More visual stuff now rather than options would be good, the driving is fine in gt5 so gt6 should be pretty decent.

I can see gt on the ps4 being the one that contains a livery editor becausef the level of detail it can produce. Cant wait :)

I’m kind of mad that FM5 has the 1976 Formula 1 cars driven by James Hunt & Niki Lauda. Not that I hate the FM series, but I hate that it’s on a next gen console that is going to be a huge dissapointment. Out of all my friends, I’m the only one that owned a PS3. Everyone else had the 360. At least if I wanted to play FM3 or 4, I could just use theirs, Now that we’re all getting the PS4, I won’t be able to play FM5, which is the only place so far that has both of their cars. I doubt we’ll see them in GT6, but there is always hope for GT7.

Unfortunately there’ll be no classic McLaren in this game. And classic cars portrayed are from the 80’s and 90’s, not from the 70’s. Maybe on DLC but I doubt it.
