GTPlanet’s GT6 Track of the Week: Desert Valley Raceway

Gran Turismo 6

Death Valley isn’t the most popular environment amongst the track-making community. The unforgiving track barriers don’t help, and the desert setting doesn’t offer the elevation changes that Eifel and Andalusia can. But climbing and diving alone don’t make a track great: look at Sebring (our first TOTW recepient, actually). For the 19th week of this feature, we’ve got a relatively flat Death Valley track that nonetheless offers up plenty of fast-paced racing under the sun’s glare: Desert Valley Raceway.

GT6-Desert-Valley-Raceway-MapAfter successive short tracks – all better-suited to more humble rides – have grabbed the TOTW designation (most recently being last week’s Smörgåsbord), DVR is better suited to a faster breed of automobile. In fact, we’ve moved all the way up to full-blown race cars here! The additional speed makes the high-velocity S-bends all the more difficult, while consideration is needed for the multiple braking zones peppering the lap.

Track creator GTRufus has crafted some suitably long straights to out-drag opponents on too. At just over 5.3km long, a lap can be completed in under two minutes in a well-sorted racer, with top speeds comfortably over 270km/h. Watch Rufus masterfully dissect a field of cars in a three lap Arcade Mode race below:

must have taken a few tries to get that.
I’ve never liked Death Valley, and this video shows why. You can see where driver is consistently having to account for the random road surface. I like bumpy roads, but when it’s nearly every corner like DV makes, it’s an unenjoyable experience, especially when combined with the glaring sun that forces you to lower your EV and the bland backdrop, which isn’t helped by its decor items as most are so small and thin, or don’t offer any colour variety from all the brown.

I have a feeling this would have been better on Andalucia.

Unrelated to this track, why have no touge courses been selected? Selection can’t be based on rating and downloads (seeing as this is fairly low in both, at the time of writing this), so that should ignore our smaller community, but the only thing close to our courses was a mediocre hillclimb.

Great track, and great driving there. I’ll give ALB123 right, almost didn’t think you would make it. Good track mate

Nice track and nice driving. I almost didn’t think you were going to take 1st place from that Nissan as you neared the end of lap 3.

Welcome to the club! Looks like a pretty nice track. I would try it out but, my PS3 is at home with my younger brother since I have a PS4.
