Honda’s kicked off this year’s Tokyo Motor Show with one of its most interesting concepts yet. Taking inspiration from its own legacy, The Honda Sports EV applies a modern look to the manufacturer’s S-car coupe range from the 1960s and looks all the better for it.
Following last month’s Urban EV, the coupe is the second concept in the EV range. Honda is keen to put both of these cars into production. The mantra behind the Sports EV is to reintroduce the joy of driving to the EV range whilst also allowing the driver to “feel unity with the car”. We’ll take your word for it, Honda.
Honda’s remaining coy on the Sports EV’s technical specs for the moment. It seems that, although the intention is to be on sale in the near future, the Sports EV is still very much a concept.
Sporting a slinky evolution of the Urban’s design language, the car could be a favorite with motorheads and casual drivers alike. We were big fans of the little city car, and its clean, uncluttered lines transfer well to the coupe shape.
Honda has earmarked the car for city driving and as such is targeting Asia and Europe. Unfortunately, the US will miss out as the manufacturer doesn’t believe the Sports EV is suitable for the region.
This shouldn’t be a shock though, as many small cars before it have shunned the nation. If you’re desperate for the vehicle once it makes production, you’ll have to import it into the country.
The Honda Sports EV concept is expected to reach markets in 2020.
