Following a season as a reserve for Ponos Nakajima Racing, Gran Turismo World Series winner Igor Fraga will have a full-time drive in Super Formula for 2025.

Fraga, a Super Formula ambassador, last raced in an SF series in 2023 as he took part in the junior Super Formula Lights season. It looked to be a largely frustrating campaign dogged with mechanical issues, but he nonetheless secured several podium finishes and one race win.

In that season he had been pulling double-duty, racing for Anest Iwata in the Lexus RC F in Super GT’s GT300 class. That position continued into 2024, so although he didn’t take part in the open-wheel category he nonetheless remained familiar with the circuits used in both series.

Fraga took part in the Super Formula official and rookie tests in December 2024 at the Suzuka Circuit. He set the top time among the newcomers across the three days — as well as the fifth fastest time overall — in a session that included new Haas F1 driver Oliver Bearman, taking part as a familiarization exercise for the circuit.

Taking to the track on the final, rookie-only day, Fraga set a best lap in the Honda-powered #64 Ponos Nakajima car of 1:36.077. That was three-tenths ahead of the next-best driver, Seita Nonaka in the Toyota-powered #8 Kids.com Team KCMG car, with Bearman third and close to a second back.

Across the whole three-day test, the fastest time was a 1:35.597 set by Tadasuke Makino — who finished third in the 2024 championship, in the title-winning Dandelion Racing car. His 2024 team-mate, Kakunoshin Ohta, set the second-fastest time at 1:35.656.

Fraga will take charge of the #64 across the whole 12-race season, which begins with a Suzuka double-header in March and ends with a Suzuka double-header in November. We don’t yet know if he’ll be returning to Super GT action as well, although there are no schedule clashes between the two series…
