In a little bit of a surprise announcement, Polyphony Digital has revealed the free My First Gran Turismo demo in full, ahead of its launch this coming Friday, December 6.
As we were pretty much expecting from the original announcement, My First Gran Turismo looks to be a compact demo underpinned by Gran Turismo 7’s content and engine with a few nods to past games. PD appears to be pitching it as a title for players who’ve never experienced GT before, with the good old “7-77” tagline, but there’s still something for veteran players to enjoy.
In terms of its overall look, there’s a mix of changes to the UI which seem to hark back to older games, as well as some considerably larger text and more brightly colored menus. However, the actual driving and HUD appear unchanged — and the game even supports both the PS5 Pro enhancements and PS VR2…
My First Gran Turismo: Tracks
It looks like the demo is limited to three circuits: Kyoto Driving Park Miyabi, Deep Forest, and Trial Mountain. The images and videos shown in the announcement trailer don’t seem to feature any reverse variants either, with all of the action across the various event types limited to those three courses.
My First Gran Turismo: Cars
At present it’s actually a little unclear what cars you’ll be able to use. There’s a total of 18 cars for you to collect, all of which are road cars from Gran Turismo 7, but many, many more than that appear driven by the AI and also available to the player in some of the events.
What we do know is that the cars you can collect — which we’ll list below — are available to transfer to your Gran Turismo 7 garage once you complete the set. It remains to be seen if that’s for new players only or whether players with more progress in the main title can transfer them too.
The 18 cars you can earn are:
- Audi TT Coupe 3.2 V6 ’03
- BMW M3 Sport Evolution ’89
- Citroen DS21 Pallas ’70
- Daihatsu Copen ’02
- Dodge Challenger R/T ’70
- Ferrari 308 GTB ’76
- Honda NSX Type R ’92
- Lamborghini Countach LP400 ’74
- Mazda Roadster (ND) S ’15
- Mazda RX-7 FD Spirit R ’02
- MINI Cooper S ’05
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V GSR ’98
- Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R ’89
- Porsche 911 930 Turbo ’81
- Suzuki Jimny XC ’18
- Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 ’83
- Volkswagen Golf VII GTI ’14
- Volvo 240 SE Estate ’93
My First Gran Turismo: Events
Traditional GT features abound in the, though short, list of events. There’s some classic licence missions, with B, A, and IB levels available — although we don’t know how many tests in each section — time trials at each of the three tracks, and three sets of races.
The format of the races isn’t totally clear right now, but they look to be short events comprising just one race on each track: the Sunday Cup at Kyoto, the Clubman Cup at Deep Forest, and the GT Cup at Trial Mountain. We’d expect each to feature progressively quicker machinery.
You can also run practice laps at the three tracks and, in a bang up-to-date section, each also hosts its own Music Rally event (which we’re really hoping will come to GT7 too).
We’re not sure about any online features. There’s clearly no multiplayer element, but GT7 does of course require a constant internet connection in order to play pretty much all of the game. While there’s not a lot of reason for MFGT to require the same, it’s a possibility.
Additionally there’s a feature for sharing your times in the various events but, from the looks of things, this is for local play only. That could be just from other people playing on your account, like in the pre-networked days of GT1/GT2 Arcade Mode leaderboards, or perhaps others on your console.
All in, it looks like a fun little way to experience GT for the first time and for free, starting on Friday December 6. The title is already listed in the PlayStation Store, and it just so happens that Gran Turismo 7’s Standard Edition is discounted by 50-60% in the Store right now and through to December 20.
It’ll be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and is a standalone download coming in at 12GB and 15GB respectively.
