A surprise blog post on the official series website has revealed the first tidbits of information on Need for Speed 2017.
Ghost Games shifted its focus from 2015’s Need for Speed a year ago and we finally have an indication of what to expect from this year’s title. Customization was a huge plus-point in the previous entry in the series, and Ghost insists the focus remains on giving players the tools to make their dream rides.
The police presence in NFS2015 left a lot to be desired. The passive nature of the boys in blue often made their threat minimal in the grand scheme of the game. That too will change with the return of the Rhino SUV — known for its appearance in the PS2-era Need for Speed titles. It looks like the next city will be a lot more intimidating than Ventura Bay for street racing shenanigans.
Speaking of Ventura Bay, it served its purpose well but compared to other open-world racers like Burnout Paradise it didn’t quite stack up. Need for Speed 2017 will introduce a more action-oriented world with the promise of tarmac and dirt routes to add some variety. We don’t have much to go on but the post does mention canyon racing, which is sure to excite fans of Need for Speed Carbon.
“Online-only” has never been a welcome term in the racing genre and when EA and Ghost made the decision to drop any form of offline play, they certainly heard the negative feedback. Need for Speed 2017 will stop this feature in its tracks as the title will be fully playable in single player offline. No strings attached, pausing included.
That’s all the team is willing to share for now with EA PLAY (the publisher’s E3 alternative) just around the corner. Need for Speed 2017 will be there and we imagine it will be front and center during the show. After the mixed reception of the last entry, Ghost will have a lot of expectations to meet.
