When the Mitsubishi Evolution ceased production last year, many thought that the name would be retired for good. Now, Mitsubishi has resurrected the legendary Evo name at the Tokyo Motor Show… for an electric SUV.
Despite the controversial form, the new electric Evo is described as a technology concept to showcase new advanced driver assistance systems.
One of these technologies is a new Artificial Intelligence system that can read changes in road and traffic conditions, as well as the behavior of the driver. The new system also includes a coaching function to seamlessly improve the driver’s skill.
Power for the Evo comes from three electric motors, with a single motor for the front axle and dual motors for the rear. The two rear motors integrate a new Dual Motor Active Yaw Control system for advanced torque vectoring.
That power is transmitted through Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system for improved cornering performance and traction. No performance figures were given for the Evo concept.
Inside, the Evo features a fully digital dashboard and instrument panel geared towards a connected driving experience.
Although the new Evo is unlikely to go into production in its current form, the wild styling could point towards a new electrified crossover from Mitsubishi in the near future. It is also unknown if the new driver assistance technology will be used in any future Evo model.
If the Evo is fully resurrected in the near future, it will be very interesting to see what form it may take.
