Paintable Rear Wings Coming to GT6 in Future Update

Gran Turismo 6

In a new post on Polyphony Digital’s PitStop blog, there’s a small mention of a new feature which is slated to come to Gran Turismo 6 in a future update: paintable custom rear wings. According to the remarks, you’ll be able to match the wing’s color to the car its on or select any other color for which you own the paint chip in the game.

The feature is mentioned in a larger article which describes the growth and diversity on display at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon. In addition to photos from the show, the article includes new screenshots of painted spoilers in GT6.

I wish we could do two tone paint jobs on the cars but being able to paint rear wings is a nice addition.

  2. Jack The Ripper

Lol! Really? People are excited for this? Yeah, instead of being stuck in the year 1995, with this one feature Pd has made a slow crawl to the year 1996. Hip hip hooray.

    1. Lille B

      Sadly….you’re right… remember the NFS Underground 2

Where the player had complete control over paint
      and style over the car….

Do that GT6, and lets talk about cheering

  3. gt3_racer05

That’s awesome! More way to customize a car. If they include features that allows tail lights to be blackened and paint wheels of the car individually, I’ll be a happy man

  4. UPRC

Awesome! I for one am really looking forward to this major feature, which I am certain required the 13-14+ months to incorporate into the game post launch. I am very overjoyed to see PD working on such major features that provide hours of replayability over little demanded/requested features that were not hyped or promised, such as B-Spec or a course creator. Good on you, PD! I will be playing GT6 religiously when I am at last able to paint my wings, and I thank you for putting so much time and work into what is such a crucial and large update that fans have been salivating over since before launch.

Kudos again, you guys will forever be my absolute favourite developer and I would never dream of boycotting any of your games after you have developed on EVERY promise you’ve made with GT6.

    Signed,
    Your biggest fan!

  5. imalexi

Remarkable, I get to paint a part of the car I never look at. I’m surprised people are so happy about this. Does it really matter what colour a wing is? More tracks or track creator please PD. Stop trying to please the kids with pathetic updates like these.

  6. wraith of horus

Forza has had paintable Wings, Mirrors, bonnets, roofs, rear boots for years and years a long time on Xbox 360 on old Forzas. GT has bren around longer than Forza!…. I’m glad PD have finally thought about bringing some more customization.

It took long enough. Each step is a positive one but if these are just small and easy things to add then why can’t they see that we want what Forza has and bring the ability to customize like that. Also the colour palette in GT6 in style of paint chips is also old.

The way Forza does it is so much more efficient and varied. Although the paint chips do add a realism factor in the way that they have a name of a real paint unlike forza. Also tyre width and diameter need to like it is in forza. PD need to add these things because i know everyone here or msot people who play GT will want these features.

  7. Mires

Does anyone remember how big was the last update? The holyday update? Add the time since then and probably we get something bigger than “just” paintable wings (my personal guess the course editor will be in and they keep it secret). Actually i quite like this tiny add-ons, PD, please let then comming along other, bigger stuff. :)

And BTW, there were another two VGT cars revealed already so not only a paintable wings will be in update :P

    1. SVPSkins

Its a feature i well come as i hate the odd looking black wear wing on my cars (unless the cars black of course)

  8. YukinoSuzuka

Actually we can personalize our cars more, paintable rear wings sounds lame, but together with the rims, brake calippers and body you’ve 3 colors +1 (brake calippers are hard to notice sometimes) to make your own colour scheme. You can paint the wing in the same colour as the rim or just totaly something different. I’m a fan of the Zakspeed (german) cars back in those days they where racing with dtm and gt3. The german colours (gold instead of yellow), a matt black body, gold rims and red wing would be epic on the SLS amg.
Or my favourite, the Megane Trophy, in the 3 colours in the flag of The Netherlands, Red White and Blue. That’s 6 possible scheme’s to try out.

  9. FiftyBelowZero

Cheesus, PD is adding a bit more customization to the game, you’re all discouraging it simply because it’s not a livery editor! Actually, it seems everything new added to the game is discouraged, from VGT to Mario Andretti, simply because it isn’t the course maker or B-Spec. Stop, please!

    1. HarVee

I’m not discouraging. I welcome the addition of colourable spoilers, but I just very much dislike the fact that it has taken them (PDI) this long to implement the feature. Six games later and we’re finally just getting such a basic feature.

  10. Brewguy44

What about racing stripes? Maybe not on all cars but it might be nice. How bout they get rid of those 50 odd rims in the middle of the group and get some better ones? The top half is good and bottom half also, does anybody use them???

  11. celtiscorpion73

I’m all for the paintable wings, but if you’re going to work on customizing wings, give us more customizable parts and the ability to put them on more of the cars that are already there. Scrap the whole “Premium” and “Standard” types of cars and allow more free reign of the appearance on the cars you’ve given us.

  12. z71L28

I dont add wings to any of my cars so this feature does not do anything for me. But I like the fact that PD is still working on small add on features towards coustimazation. Would have rather prefared new wheel designs and manufactuers.

  13. DGXR

    *facepalm*
The last thing PD should be focusing on is how to let the players paint a body part. (This does not include livery, which is much more than a coat of paint.) GT6 is a great game but many improvements are needed, and most of the improvements needed in GT6 are far more important than the color of the rear wing.

    1. Johnnypenso

Do you think they are solely “focusing” on painting wings right now? I don’t think they release improvements in order of importance, just the order they are ready. Yes improvements are needed but the PS3 is the limiting factor at this point, don’t expect much more than small improvements like this until GT7 comes out. Not talking about added content of course, that’s not limited by the PS3, just features and other non-content improvements.

  14. jhw93

Why are people talking about this as though it’s all that PD are adding? Just because they have not announced anything else yet doesn’t mean all we are getting is wing paint.

You guys are so quick to right things off before you even have a clue what the next update will be.

  15. LVracerGT

Paintable wings? So weak. PS3 hardware is no excuse. Forza was running on pretty much the same restrictions on 360. It’s a matter of developer choices. The only thing PD is doing here is re-affirming to everyone their downfall.

    1. Tenacious D

Uhm… yeah, sold the most racers on the PS3 among the games released since last fall.

I suppose you could get an Xbone and Forza 5, and race a piddling number of cars on a stingy list of tracks, over and over and over…

    2. Destructo1990

TD, it’s no different with GT because the cars for all the races never change even with all the variety. I don’t play F5 because I don’t have a XB1 and I have no desire to play it. At the same time, due to the shortcomings of GT6, I have no desire to play it either.

    3. Johnnypenso

If you raced every car in Forza in a 5 lap race on each track it would take you roughly 750 hours without ever repeating a car/track combination. Not bad for a piddling car count and stingy list of tracks.

  16. Kurei

Is this how PD plans to buy themselves more time ?, because this feels like a new-low for GT, even after the Q&A debacle.

Not to mention the M.I.A. January update.

  17. dylanlikes88

I’m all for customization options for my cars, but I really wish that course creator would come out. Just saying…

    1. Tenacious D

While they’re at it, they need to add paintable mirror housings, as on race cars.

PD is sure taking baby steps now, which makes me wonder if GT7 might possibly make an appearance at E3… seems like the focus has shifted almost entirely to the new game.

  18. infamousphil

Ok, so why not was it done for 5? These guys are slow as molasses in winter.

Personel shortages and difficulties with PS3 system are probable causes for delays but shouldn’t be an excuse for simple things like painting wings. But it’ll be nice… if realized.

  19. Jayson619

    Paintable custom rear wings….no thks.

I need Lamborghini cars; Veneno and Sesto Elemento….and WHY IS THE NORMAL CAR-STREET-LEGAL GT-R NISMO ’14 STILL NOT ALLOWED FOR NORMAL RACES!?!

    1. FiftyBelowZero

You can’t expect a bunch of cars to come in one update. That won’t happen. For new cars to appear, you’ll have to wait for GT7.

  20. gnorman

Is that it? Would rather they finished or fixed aspects of GT6 that made a difference to the game itself such as B-Spec,endurance racing, proper career mode, ai etc.

Maybe they are working from the bottom up on the To Do list

  21. Kovu

Every kind of customization we’re allowed to do is great, so, thanks to PD for that.

However, why didn’t they include this in the initial release? It’s no feature that takes years to develop… its obvious people would enjoy to do this.

  22. VBR

It is a nice touch for sure. But I’d much prefer to have the ability to turn off SRF everywhere in the game, or some such similar common sense option.

    1. HarVee

Features other racing titles have had for over 10 years now we’re finally just getting. But GT is improving every day. Totally.

      More like every decade.

  23. TRLWNC7396

I think this is a wonderful addition! Sure, it’s not a FULL livery editor, but it is another step towards that.

Too long? Really? You think that getting this to work with 1200+ cars is a one-hour job?

Come on, folks. We are dealing with a high quality, no tolerance attitude (and I’ve seen the complaints when they don’t hold to their standard of quality) that requires everything to work right.

This is a good step in the direction of a full livery editor. I think it is awesome.

And the idea of coloring the rear wings for identification? AWESOME!!!! I’m going to use that FOR SURE!!!!

  24. SpawnBlack

Everyone seem to forget that Kaz said that working with the PS3 was hard in itself to work with when developing GT5. So it is important to remember that it would be the same for GT6.

Not every update will be a big one and have all of what we want. The best thing to do is take what we get but still make requests for what we’d like to have in GT6 and for GT7. I personally think that GT5 with all it’s features is a better game in that sense, but when it comes to GT6, it was clearly more about the driving physics which help with developing GT Academy as it was the same for GT5.

I would love to have more features in this current version of GT, but top be very realistic it will not happen. I can’t wait for GT7 to be released so we can all get what we want. Roll on GT7.

  25. dddsprayshop

Small extra feature added to the vision stuff in the next update, okay.
Like some allready wrote, some livery options maybe.
    I like it.

  26. KOUKI507

I usually don’t criticize PD so much and I am always thankful for new free content. But if they put so much time just to bring us paintable rear wings, I am not optimistic for GT7.

I am no video games expert, but I think PD puts more time than other developers to get things done, sometime with better quality, but sometimes not. So if they want GT7 to be a revolution, maybe they should be more efficient, or bring more staff? If they do, I’m in!

    1. ironman44321

Not trying to single you out here, but I feel like I have a better chance of not getting flamed for asking you, but where does time come into this?

We have no idea how long they’ve been working on this. More likely than not this was just a little side feature that is only taking so long because it isn’t a priority. We have to remember that not only are PD working on GT7, but they are also still modelling VGT cars and working on the course maker. They’ve got a lot going on right now.

    2. FiftyBelowZero

      >so much time just to bring us paintable rear wings

      What?

Do you seriously think this is their “primary focus” right now? Something as small as extra paint customization? It’s just a tiny addition.

    3. Psychopulse

I think what KOUKI507 meant to say is that if it were really something that could’ve been done in a small timeframe, it could’ve easily been implemented as an early update after release in order to focus on more important priorities. Granted, GT7 is the primary focus at PD, but taking so much time for such a simple customization option nevertheless leaves a bad impression, especially considering that GT7 will be coming out within the next year.

  27. Nomadpt1

I like this, this is a nice feature. Now they could put the ability to paint mirrors, bonnets, roofs and tinted windows

  28. Coquico

Nice, but I wonder why this “small feature” is not in the game already. Hope it to be included in a big update…

  29. aboe

    This is, like, totes awesome.

We here at the Fashionable Amiable Gamers Society are sooo happy that features like this are FINALLY making it into the game. Our prayers have been answered.

Thank you so much to the gods at PD for making this a reality.

Now all we need are paintable door handles and paintable side view mirrors and we’re all set for GT Fashion Week 2015!

    Go Kaz!

    1. HarVee

Or headlight covers, paintable racing numbers, individual aero kits like as in GT5, racing seats, roll cages – the whole enchilada. I do love a good slice of enchiladas. Too bad PDI seem to be delivering only the taco shells.

  30. ironman44321

People have been saying that PD won’t be adding any more promised features for nearly a year now…Just like when people said we weren’t going to get any more VGT cars, or that we were never going to get Sierra. Notice a pattern here?

    1. FiftyBelowZero

A huge feature like a livery editor isn’t going to be released in an update. You’ll have to wait for GT7.

  31. ironman44321

Cool, I was just thinking the other day that it would be nice to be able to paint them. It’s not major of course, but the customization (when this comes out) will have become a good bit better than it was at launch.

  32. joaosoarescso

If people want to be able to tint windows, addingcolored numbers, paint the exhaust tip, carbon fiber everywhere, and vinyls, why you won’t play some NFSU, it already exists. why you all want to go back to 2004?

    1. Ben Rogue

Because we shouldn’t need to play 3 different driving games to get the different things we want.. How hard is it to get a realistic driving sim that also lets you actually customise cars? It shouldn’t be such a difficult thing to get

  33. Psychopulse

So, it took that long just to have paintable rear wings? Then how long would other customization options take? Where is wheel width/offset, tire width/profile, aftermarket body kits from real manufacturers, and the list goes on? Seriously, I hope GT7 being the main priority at PD is the main reason behind the delay…

    1. Tunerguy21

To be fair, we do have some real aftermarket aero bits (sans name brands, of course). But you’re right in that we should have more options, especially by now. At least its a step in the right direction.

    2. Psychopulse

You’re right, this addition gives us hope that a livery editor is coming!! PD is taking the time to look at the suggestions forums, hopefully by GT7 we’ll have plenty of options!

  34. CallmeDan

Looks like it will be helpful for endurance series so drivers can tell which class a car is in. Example: Two silver SLS AMGs racing. One is in GT1, the other in GT2. GT1 cars have red wings, GT2 have blue wings.

  35. DCybertron

Finally. Wings can fit in better with cars now and look less tacky. Maybe soon we can paint the CF bits on body kits.

  36. kolio123

I am sorry, but I would like to race on a custom created oval before switching to next gen. Maybe they should finish this game before stressing over the next game…? My opinion though.

  37. warpkez

Can we get a list of what is going to be fixed? Will the pause/lockup bug when crossing the start/finish line of the new Sakitto be fixed?

  38. Ben Rogue

This seems like something that would take 5 minutes to do, why has it taken them literally years? The little things do add up but damn does it take PD a long time to do the little things…

    1. Chameleon9000

I really don’t think that PD have been working on paintable rear wings for years. They probably just thought of the idea a couple of weeks ago and decided to implement it.

    2. Ben Rogue

@Chameleon9000 I wish they would hurry up and “think” of the idea to properly implement a livery editor and a proper paint tool, this paint chip stuff is a very narrow customization option

  39. wvmgmidget

Haters be like: where’s course creator and b spec?
Seriously though I kinda like it. I hope tintable windows and colored numbers plates cone in the future too.

  40. shmogt

I’m super pumped. Little things eventually add up. The painted breaks, custom spoilers, and now painted spoilers is a step in the right direction. Hopefully it will be foreshadowing the amount of customizations to come in GT7.

  41. Amac500

On day I think they’ll let us add racing stripes to the cars. I think we all know a livery maker isn’t a realistic expectation, but since we can now add driver number, and custom and paintable wings to street cars, I think eventually in GT6 we’ll see racing stripe options. And who knows… Maybe the different stripes on those Miatas were a foreshadow of that.

Tell ya what though, I see that picture with the Viper and the Vette like they are suppose to be the real world race cars. If they want us to look at it like that they need to let us strip the interiors for racing one. Or they could just add base model Viper and C7 Vette race cars… actually I’d prefer that :D

  42. Pootis

Paintable brake calipers, rear wings you can customize, custom gauges and now this.

This is nice but… we still want a livery editor to top it off.

    1. Amac500

I think introducing all these options are an alternative to adding livery editor, and I do expect we’ll see more things like this. I mean we’ve all seen how much sensor PD uses in online lobby chats, they won’t let us put whatever we want on cars.

  43. sgohsixthree

Awesome!! This is one of the features I really wanted and seemed simple enough. Especially after being able to paint brakes. Maybe I’m too easy to please.. but I’m happy!

    1. GTAndy36

An update like this should happen without advertising the fact it’s coming. It’s a tiny change. If this is ‘an update’ people are happy with people need to have some new priorities.

    2. RACECAR

@GTAndy36: Except no where does it imply that its the only thing in the update. We still have the Alpine and Lexus VGTs also coming.

    3. Pseudopod

If people read the pit stop post, they’ll see that the thing about painting rear wings is just a tiny “p.s.” at the very bottom of a very long post. It’s not advertised as a huge new feature.
