PlayStation 4 Gets Price Drop in USA, Canada

ps4-hardware

Today, Sony has announced a significant price drop on the fast-selling PS4 and its numerous bundles, both existing and upcoming, in Canada and the US. These prices will go into effect tomorrow, October 9, just in time for the Thanksgiving weekend for those of us located in the Great White North.

The headline figure is $350 for the cheapest bundle, a 500gb model with the Nathan Drake Collection (also due out tomorrow). This represents a $50 savings over the existing price in the US. Canada fairs worse with this bundle, seeing $20 taken off the existing $450 price. The other list prices are as follows:

  • Limited Edition Call of Duty Black Ops 3 1TB bundle (Available 11/06) – $430 / CAD 500
  • Limited Edition Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars bundle (Available 11/13) – $400 / CAD 470
  • Limited Edition Star Wars Battlefront bundle (Available 11/17) – $400 / CAD 470
  • Star Wars Battlefront bundle (Available 11/17) – $350 / CAD 430
  • NHL 16 bundle (Canada only) – CAD 430

This price drop follows on the heels of a similar reduction in Japan last month, and follows the Sony tradition of a price drop before the two year mark for systems. For those that have been holding out on joining the ranks of Sony’s current-gen players, this may be just the push needed. Of course, maybe you’re waiting for the PlayStation Experience before you decide.

I haven’t used my PS4 for several months. Personally it has been a waste and I’ve been engrossed in PC gaming. For me, the PS4 is not worth the money, especially now that Sony expect us to pay for PS+ to play online…..I wouldn’t have minded if the servers had improved, but from my experience it’s no better than what we had with the PS3.

  2. Psychopulse

Guys! I have a serious question: Besides, GT, The Last of Us, and Uncharted, what are other PS exclusives that would make it worth buying PS4? I’m still undecided because Xbox One is so tempting with Forza, Halo, Gears of War, Sunset Overdrive, Tomb Raider, etc. I’m so tempted to get Xbox One right now, but I just want to see how GT7 is first.

    1. Benny44

It really depends what you like for games. I love baseball, for instance, and Sony has had the only baseball game worth playing in the past few years with ‘the show’

    2. IceKoldKilla

God of War, maybe Final Fantasy, some games also seem to have exclusive (or timed exclusive) content like Destiny, Batman Arkham Knight, Call of Duty, etc. Also PS4 has that share button that I’m surprised I use a lot! I thought it was a gimmick I’d never use but man have I had times I see something incredible happen and I know my PS4 is already recording and will save the last 15 mins whenever I decided to hd the button and save the clip. Or take screenshots. II also heard Forza 6 ended up being like Forza 5 with not much added. I recommend you see all exclusives. Google it. And pick your console. Which ever you get, get the 1TB version or a special edition one and buy a 2TB HDD. You’ll need it eventually. Better to change it from the start. Well, only PS4 allows to change HDD for any normal 2.5″ HDD. I’d chose PS4 and get Xbox One later. I want a Xbox One now too for Forza, Gears and for backwards compatibility to play X360 games I never played.

I’m curious about the quality of the network on ps4. I don’t think Sony could have charged for online gaming on the ps3 if they wanted to…it’s atrocious compared to xblive. And has anybody else noticed ps+ “FREE” games are getting lamer and later each month? I think they have actually skipped a month with their little delays. Xbox is every month on the 1St and 15th with games like AC black flag and MGS ground zero or Crysis 3 and now they’re even letting you pre purchase the free xb1 games for when you upgrade. I thought xb1 made the ps4 look like a chump at the reveals. glad to see I wasn’t crazy and as always fanboys are re-re-retarded

  4. kapnk006

How about a “Trifecta” Bundle Pack w/ GT7, pCars and AC pre-installed? Ok, well maybe a pre-order coupon for GT7 and AC……lol.

  5. johnnyman123

Whats the saying for Mopars? Mopar or no car? Well in this case, GT7 or no PS4.

GT7 is literally the one and only thing keeping me from buying a X1, pointblank. Hope PD delivers on GT7 cus if not X1 ill be going.

  6. Keithdoom

With every console, I’ve waited for GT to be released before buying. Considering I’ve only ever used PS controllers, I wonder if Project Cars is okay on the PS controller in the way that GT is. I mean, Project Cars is the first game other then GT that I’d use. But should I just wait for GT7?

    1. liv4hardstyle

The wait for gt7 could be a long one given the history of delays with previous titles. All the while you could be enjoying project cars which in my opinion is stellar. That way you get the best of both worlds and a taste of something different.

  7. Cote Dazur

20$ off in Canada vs 50$ off in the US is totally unfair to Canadians, the exchange rate alone would dictate a 65$ CND discount. This Canadian is not buying a PS4 until Sony gets their math right.

    1. sumbrownkid

No they got their math right when they want to make a profit in the Canadian dollar. You honestly think they don’t have people talented in math making these decisions?

    2. Benny44

Completely agree with you Cote Dazur. Their math is way off. At least match dollar for dollar. @sumbrownkid – Your excuse for Sony is about as ridiculous as you can get

  8. TJC_69

    For anyone who doesn’t have a PS4 yet,this is my view on the machine itself;

Pros-The graphics on most new games you will definitely like. Sharing gameplay pics and video is easy. DS4 feels ergonomically and a huge improvement.

Cons-Less feature functionality than PS3,E.G,Cannot save pictures, only screenshots, or music, or videos from the internet. In it’s latest firmware update Sony actually made typing functionality WORSE. You could easily post on GTP before in the same way as on a PS3 browser but now you are stuck with a permanent chat box display. This makes typing MUCH more difficult and is a huge loss for web browsing. Why they did this I have no idea.

So in short, good and bad. Depending on how you like to use a console in the first place.

  9. Lambob

Project Cars has a major 5.0 patch out today, featuring updated Oculus Rift SDK, and Assetto Corsa did too yesterday.

I believe I may never need a PS4 afterall, as they also fubar’d the anticipated Rockband4 release. Money saved!

  10. wraith of horus

On Amazon you can buy a PS4 500Gb for £279.00 or a 1TB edition for £298.48. Considering they were £350.00. Its the cheapest its ever been. And have you guys who can’t afford one even tried Ebay or buying a Pre Owned one. Theres plenty of choices, options and prices. I boughts brand new Samsung Galaxy S3 on Ebay for £278.00 when it was brand new and mostly £500.00 – £600.00. Look around and you’ll find a bargain somewhere usually. If you still can’t afford one, well probably buy PS Vita or a try mobile gaming or something.

  11. biftizmo

There used to be a rumor round here that poll D were lazy…dumb and just money orentated ripping off ther Costomers…it’s even acouple of years now and they’ve ask for no more money…who’s paying for all this stuff and the R and D for GT7-VR.and if we’re to believe that GT6 sales were the worst of any game ever…..all I can say is if this was a western company .this project would have been ditched as highly unprofitable venture….

    1. TomBrady

If you’re really gonna buy a console just for one game, you might as well buy it for $50 less. This price drop isn’t gonna last past December and they might not even do it again next year either

The only reason they’re doing it now is because they don’t have a ton of exclusives this fall but still want to beat Xbox One in sales. You snooze, you lose. Remember that

    2. biftizmo

To brandy…things get cheaper always it’s all about volume and logistics…..but they have to bring the price down because the VR kit is gonna be as cheep as possible but it’s still gonna be big bucks for headset,ps4,game,ONLINE FEES and wheel if we’re talking GT7-VR….

    3. Magic Ayrton

I agree.. Must admit I have been holding off buying a PS4 for GT7.. But with talks of VR now I am really not holding my breath and may even skip the whole GT thing from now on. Way too ambitious for a company that clearly does not listen to it’s biggest followers.

    1. Aussie_HSV

You do realise the PS4 is pushing 2 years old?

‘Next gen’ is stating to fall a little flat, don’t you think?

    2. ccaranna

Yes yes, 2 years old. I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday. Current gen, next gen, whatever you want to call it. It’s the same thing to me since I don’t have one.

    3. SZRT Ice

Who cares about “social standards”? If he’s still on the previous gen, then our current gen is his next gen!

Also, as there are still far more PS3 owners/players then PS4, “next gen” will apply for awhile, until the mass majority is on current gen more than the previous. The PS3 isn’t obsolete the world over just yet…

    4. Johnnypenso

PS4 software is far outselling PS3 software, in spite of the much smaller install base. This tells me most of the serious gamers and game buyers have made the move to PS4 so it seems more than fair to call it “current gen” at this point.

  12. Whodoyouthink

Well, with PS+ being required for online, I am honestly still a bit turned off. Although, since the best option is the 1 year bundle, which is $50, it’s only really equal to losing out of money for one game, or a couple other cheaper forms of entertainment. It still isn’t right that after all this time, technically Sony is charging us for online use and play. Never once before was that true, and yet here we are, all being ok with that. We lost the biggest pro over Xbox Live, and we don’t even seem to care (I say that because the console is selling just fine, and obviously people still play online).

And I’m still waiting for at least 3-4 games that truly come off as a must have, especially for exclusives. I still have the best of both worlds too, in that I have my free-to-play-online PS3, in which some new releases are a bit cheaper, and my capable PC, which I installed a driver on to be able to use my PS3 controller!

I honestly haven’t been super impressed by this generation and I think I’m not the only one.

    1. Aussie_HSV

Personally I not that fussed because I still play online with my PS3 for free.
I’m not sure many XBox 360 players can claim the same thing.

I don’t begrudge PlayStation for the subscription to the PSN for PS4.
      It was bound to happen.
It’s clearly the business model these days.
And the benefits, should you chose to use them, (arguable admittedly, but that’s a different story), outweigh the cost anyway.

In 2015 you need to find another excuse.
It is what it is for online console gaming.

    2. OpticZero

I’m right there with us, Whodo. I’m a huge gamer, but my gaming is still on my PS3 and a computer. This new generation is way too pricey…and charging for online is ridiculous. That’s one of the main reasons why people played with the Sony over the Microsoft last generation.

    3. TomBrady

@jp not nearly as big of a chunk of change that the free PS Plus games will save you. Unless you’re not really a gamer, in which case why are you getting a console in the first place?

    4. biftizmo

What it was is….Microsoft changed £££££ for points so you young ex boxers …dint care how much mummy was paying…for your online activatys….as a PS1’er it was just accepted that online gameing would be free..it was how it was sold to us …the future….but then came Xbox for there slice of the pie….I was upset when Sony started charging with the ps4…..well what could they do?you were all willing to pay as much as…and Microsoft have been getting away with it from the start……

    5. cfc

biftizmo – this was one of the most idiotic post i have read here
If it wasnt for Xbox, you would still be playing with PS1
Funny tho-Xbox came for “slice of pie” yet managed to to put Sony in corner with MS prices, games etc.-if you think you have some kind of exclusivity you are deluded – SEGA,Nintendo was loooong before Sony decided to came for the “slice of pie” – so before you talk crap, learn some history
Well, you can keep crappy free online gaming – i rather pay 28eur per year to have free games monthly and other goodies,go figure.
You should ask ya mommy to pay those 28eur,you will see how world would change ;)

    6. cfc

Johnnypenso – if you considering 28eur per year is expensive,im lost – you get free good games monthly, you get alot of other goodies as well, for what you would be paying much more than 28eur for single “item” on pc,so your comparison not really much fair either
This month Xbox gave 3 good games for free for gold users,on pc you would have paid ~60-70ish for them – some people need to do some small research before they start comparing
PS3 online free? Good luck with that – my ps3 sold after 2 months when GT5 failed epically, not missing at all,was horrendous free online on ps3 back then

    7. biftizmo

Cfc. …did you pay to change your name tag….I paid for them all dude I have to I’m a dad….I’ve just bin given this junk to get out of his room….DS,wifi,Xbox,360. Halo 1 2 and 3…0ne other game…not many to show for 6 years of subscription….all for charty shop….ther now considered junk….but he’s hanging on to my ps1 and PS2 because he’s got plenty of games for them (my games)…. I on the other hand have a PS3 and have had many years of play and still are doing….for free….so you see I do know how much everything costs after all….and he’s bought is own PS4 and subscriptions because he’s loaded….

    8. Johnnypenso

@cfc Nowhere did I say that the PS4 is too expensive. I said gaming is free on pc for the most part, and for some people $200 is a good chunk of change. I had PS+ for a year on PS3 and found the “free” games were worth exactly what I paid for them.

    9. Racemachine

You guys know that if you don’t renew your ps plus all the free games you downloaded they delete most of them if not all of them.

  13. Hastatus

20$ off in Canada vs 50$ off in the US seems unfair to Canadians. Although I want a PS4, I have been waiting for a PS4 edition that comes with no games. I do not understand why this has not happened for the PS4 when there was always a system-only edition for every previous system I have purchased since the PS1…I may have to wait for a GT7 edition.

    1. MeanElf

That’s down to the retailers though, surely? We in the UK have had console only purchase options alongside the bundled ones. There have been more bundles with this generation but we’ve always had the console only.

    2. Hastatus

I have kept my eye on them for a while now and have only ever seen bundles available in Canadian stores/flyers: the supposedly “free” digital download of “The Last of Us” is the closest I have seen to a game-free system. I dislike NaughtyDog and do not wish to give them any “free” money. If you look at SCEA’s Playstation blog: they too only list bundles for US and Canada. Surely you would think a system-only package would exist, but not here. It’s an easy way to force customers to pay more. I wouldn’t be surprised if the countries, such as the UK, where system-only packages exist it is due to local laws preventing such blatant fleecing with bundling practices.

  14. micantony

this means we ought to be able to find a PS4 for $300 by keeping an eye out for discounts at various vendors. or waiting until Friday Nero.

    1. Aussie_HSV

      Perhaps I shouldn’t admit to this :p
      But I bought a PS1 for A$799.
And yes, that was the going price.
      Games back then cost A$100.
I can now get a 1TB special edition COD B.Ops.3 PS4 with the game for A$579.
Regular PS4 games still cost roughly A$100

I’ll say it again, cheap as chips.

    2. TeamCZRRacing

The standards PS4 has 500gb of storage and it costs $350. Back when the PS1 was launched, the average cost per gigabyte of storage space was around $1,000. So to have a system with as much space as the PS4 would cost $500,000.

I’m sorry, were you saying something about the PS4 being too expensive?

    3. OpticZero

Comparing storage space between current rates and now is an asinine way to make a point. Going by that rationale, an Apple computer should cost about $1 million. Sony should drop the entry level system under the $300 Mark.

    4. TeamCZRRacing

My point is, we should all be grateful that we live in this day and age when a gigabyte costs less than 10 cents, because that allows us to have bigger and better games than ever. Should we keep pushing it as far as possible? Definitely. But we should also stop complaining about where we’re at now, because getting here was a heck of an achievement.

    5. Johnnypenso

Hilarious. Someone posts that the PS4 is too expensive (for him obviously) and a bunch of people jump in to tell him that he’s wrong about his personal opinion on his personal financial situation.

    6. TeamCZRRacing

Um, Johnny, I don’t know if you noticed, but I blatantly stated my point in my previous post. I’m not going after his personal opinion of his own financial situation because that would be dumb. I’m just saying that maybe we should also be grateful that, on the whole, technology is more affordable than it ever has been.

    7. TeamCZRRacing

I couldn’t find a way to say that without being sarcastic. Everything else I tried sounded worse. Once I thought it over, though, I was able to format my thoughts in a way that hopefully sounded less acidic, hence the format of my second post.

    8. Pseudopod

In that case, it’s not the ps4 that is too expensive, but every console ever created. Except wii and wiiu I guess. Maybe gaming just isn’t for you?

    9. SZRT Ice

Comparing the dollar now to the dollar then is ludicrous. Sure the numbers look lower. But the value of it then, far exceeds what you can do with it now. Gas, food, housing, & essentials… You can barely get 2 bags of chips for a dollar. Yet back then, $5 bucks was enough for all the kids in the whole neighborhood to rack up.
