Project CARS 2 will be used as a platform in an ambitious new esports championship in the UK. The British Esports Championship will pit schools and colleges against each other in a variety of titles, including Slightly Mad Studios’ sim racer.
Revealed in a press release on the British Esports website, the championship is set to kick off next month with 16 educational institutions competing. The goal of this pilot test is to effectively assess how the British Esports organization can engage young people in these types of activities.
Project CARS 2 will join established esports Overwatch and League of Legends. Both have a massive cult following, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for SMS to be involved with esteemed company. The title is no stranger to esports itself either, with an official partnership with the ESL under its belt. With this in mind, it is a well-suited choice for hosting this championship.
Slightly Mad Studios’ Chief Creative Officer Andy Tudor seems thrilled by the opportunity. Referencing the title’s use as a competitive platform and training tool, Tudor sees the British Esports Championship as an “exciting opportunity” to find talented sim racers. He also points out that this is a great chance for aspiring esports competitors.
After the trial period in February, the tournament will officially kick off in September. The schedule will follow the academic year, running through July 2019. At this point, the top performing teams will be invited to the Insomnia Games Festival for the Grand Final.
We personally think these championships are a great idea. Esports as a concept is still developing and engaging youth players at this level will help push it forward. Good luck to Slightly Mad Studios on this venture and hopefully it turns out to be a success. You can read the full press release on the British Esports website.
