Two of the most anticipated racing games of 2017, Forza Motorsport 7 and Project CARS 2, scooped prizes at the Gamescom awards ceremony this year. With 21 categories covering a wide variety of games, both claimed one award each in their respective genre categories.
Forza Motorsport 7 claimed the prize of “Best Racing Game”, beating out Project CARS 2 and Need for Speed: Payback. It marks another successful Gamescom for Turn 10, after Forza Horizon 3 won the “Best Racing Game” award last year.
Forza Motorsport 7 has been no stranger to awards this year, after it won “Best Racing Game” at the E3 2017 Game Critics Awards in June.
Project CARS 2 picked up a decisive win in the “Best Simulation” category. The nominees pitted against the Slightly Mad Studios title were much more varied, with the only other racing game being F1 2017. Who knew Life Is Strange was a simulation title?!
Microsoft’s Xbox One X took home the prize of “Best Hardware” from the show. The new console will provide significant performance and graphical upgrades for both FM7 and Project CARS 2 (and several other titles) when it goes on sale in November.
A curious absence from the awards list was Gran Turismo Sport. The upcoming PS4 racer didn’t make the shortlist for either the racing game or simulation categories. There’s a reason, however: it was a nominee last year and thus ineligible.
Despite this, Polyphony’s latest racer had a significant presence on the show floor — even receiving a brief visit from German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
With Gamescom now in the distance, there’s less than a month to go until these games start making their way onto shelves. Project CARS 2 is first out of the blocks on September 22, with Forza Motorsport 7 and GT Sport releasing just weeks after.
