PlayStation is staging another free online multiplayer period this coming weekend, December 10-11, allowing all players with any PlayStation account access to the world of online gaming for no additional cost.
Ordinarily you’d need a PlayStation Plus account to access online multiplayer across all full PlayStation releases — with only free-to-play titles like Call of Duty Warzone and Fortnite, and some budget releases not having this requirement.
PlayStation Plus itself has had a big shake-up this year, now offering three different tiers. At a minimum you’d need the “Essential” tier to access online multiplayer, at $59.99 (€59.99/£49.99) for a full year or $8.99 (€7.99/$6.99) per month.
Of course that brings other player benefits too, such as access to cloud storage, free monthly games — like DIRT 5 back in January — and the PlayStation Plus collection of games which includes Fallout 4 and Ratchet & Clank.
You won’t be able to sample these subscription benefits, or any of those from the higher tiers, as it’s only a free online multiplayer weekend. However, if you’ve previously missed out on the multiplayer aspects of titles like Gran Turismo 7, F1 22, Need for Speed Unbound, or GRID Legends, you’ll be able to dive in all weekend long for free.
The free weekend runs from December 10 through to December 11. Although PlayStation hasn’t published specific times for the free online multiplayer weekend, it’s traditionally started at 0001 and ended at 2359 in your local timezone.
This technically means you could change your system’s timezone to extend that from almost 48 hours to closer to 72 hours — although be careful with this if you play Gran Turismo 7 regularly as it will trigger an in-game daily reward issue.
