PlayStation is offering another chance for players to get involved in online multiplayer this weekend, allowing all players to access this mode across all full titles — without requiring PlayStation Plus.
It’s part of a special “PlayStation Plus Celebration” period, which see special avatars, wallpapers, online competitions, and a PlayStation Stars event, all of which is set to mark the first anniversary of the revamped service.
That’s seen PS Plus split into a new, three-tiered service, with access to online multiplayer remaining as the entry level “Essential” tier. This comes in at $59.99 (€59.99/£49.99) for a full year or $8.99 (€7.99/$6.99) per month and allows you to play against other people worldwide on all titles, rather than just free-to-play titles — like Call of Duty Warzone and Fortnite — and some budget releases.
With the requirement to pay for PS Plus to access online multiplayer dropped for the weekend, that means you’ll be able to try out the online modes of racing games like Gran Turismo 7, F1 23, or Need for Speed Unbound without having to shell out for the service.
This free online multiplayer event is one of several that PlayStation holds each year, with the last one coming back in February with the Festival of Play.
The weekend will run from June 24-25, starting at 0001 on Saturday and ending at 2359 on Sunday in your time zone. That does of course mean you can fiddle with your console’s system clock and get a few more hours in — though this could have a knock on effect in some titles, like Gran Turismo 7.
There’s a range of other promotions during the PlayStation Plus Celebration, running through to June 30. That includes five special avatars and two wallpapers for free, a speedrun challenge in Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and the chance to win a PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2. PlayStation Stars members can also pick up special trophies for PS Plus challenges.
