Honda has announced that its successful NSX GT3 race car is now available for purchase worldwide.
Powering the GT3 is a highly modified version of the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine found in the road going car. Honda Performance Development (HPD) has reworked several of the components. This includes the valvetrain, pistons, and lubrication system to make the engine race ready. Power output varies depending on the race series drivers wish to enter with their cars.
Noticeably absent from the GT3 is the hybrid system that the road going car uses. This saves weight and allows the car to tip the scales at only 2,700 lb — that’s a massive 1,100 lb lighter than the production car. The lack of the hybrid system also means the GT3 is rear wheel drive only.
The body of the GT3 comes in exposed carbon fiber allowing buyers to place their own custom livery. The aero package is also unchanged from the factory race car HPD currently uses. This means buyers get a massive rear spoiler and top-notch aerodynamic tuning.
Manufacturing of the GT3 takes place at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio. This facility also builds the road car. However, final assembly occurs at the JAS Motorsports facility in Arluno, Italy.
According to Honda, the NSX GT3 can compete in more than two dozen FIA-sanctioned racing series across the globe. This includes the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in North America and Super GT300 in Japan. Those drivers looking to tackle grueling endurance races can also take their GT3 to the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
The factory NSX GT3 has already claimed a few victories this year. This includes class wins at both Belle Isle in Detroit and the Six Hours of the Glen.
Art St. Cyr, President of HPD, looks forward to seeing the NSX is victory lane in some of the world’s toughest sports car series. Competition is stiff though, with the GT3 competing against the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche.
With a price tag of nearly $550,000 plus an additional $100,000 spare parts charge, the NSX GT3 is by no means cheap. The car is currently available for order through HPD in North America.
For racers looking for a cheaper alternative, the NSX GT3 will make appearances later this year in Gran Turismo Sport and Project CARS 2.
