We’re getting used to catching up with some esports action every weekend right now, as a whole host of famous drivers get to grips with the virtual world. This weekend’s racing starts a little early with a GT Sport event tonight, courtesy of two drivers you might not normally associate with the game.
Once again the virtual motorsport world is filling in this weekend for where the real-world can’t. With large events and gatherings on a pause for the near future, drivers and fans find themselves at a loose end, and are uniting in the digital realm.
This weekend sees the last of the GT Sport World Tour live events before November’s big final in Monaco. In just a couple of days, we’ll know who the final automatic qualifier is, as 24 drivers scrap for one last spot. There’s also the small matter of the Manufacturer Series, and the final of the GR Supra GT Cup, all packed into two days right in the middle of the Tokyo Motor Show.
The action at the GT Sport World Tour New York event is nearly upon us. This coming weekend, 36 drivers working in teams will race for their chosen brands in the Manufacturer Series. Then on Sunday, 23 drivers will battle it out for an automatic place in November’s World Final alongside Nico Rubilar and Igor Fraga.
It’s all been building to this. After Friday’s semi-finals and repechage races, and Saturday’s hugely entertaining Manufacturer Series final, the top 16 GT Sport drivers are racing for the title of Nations Cup champion.

From GT Academy champions and finalists — including GTPlanet’s own Adam Suswillo — they’re all potential winners at this level of ability. We’ve covered the regional winning trio, as well as a handful of the other drivers that could spoil their championship dreams.
30 drivers arrived in Las Vegas earlier this week after qualifying through multiple online seasons. After the usual battery of three Gr.3 block races and two repechage races — in the unexpectedly entertaining F-150 Raptor at Willow Springs — these drivers from Chile, Brazil, Canada, and the USA remain.
The drivers come from across the continent, representing 11 countries. They’ll be vying for the opportunity to take part in the inaugural World Final next month. Two thirds of them will call this the last stop on their tour however; there’s only space at the Worlds for the top 10, you see.
