One of the most exciting pieces of information to come from the GT Sport World Tour event at the Nurburgring is the arrival of wet weather conditions. It’s something fans have been looking out for since the game’s launch — the wet weather tires have been there all along — but outside of a couple of mildly moist missions, the rain has stayed away from Gran Turismo’s world.
The lack of weather conditions has been a frequent topic among critics of GT Sport. As we mentioned in our GT Sport review, the game looks better than its top competitors, but both Forza 7 and Project CARS 2 compensate with extensive weather simulations.
This year’s Forza Motorsport 7 marks a new chapter for the sim-racing side of the franchise. As you may have heard, FM7 sports an all-new dynamic race weather system.
Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that Gran Turismo Sport will not feature dynamic time-lapsing or weather. In the interview conducted by GTPlanet, Kazunori made clear that there will be no ‘transitions’ during races and conditions will be chosen prior to entering a race. These features were two of the stand-out attributes for Polyphony’s PS3-era games, however they could only be accessed on specific tracks within the game’s track roster, which meant the level of quality each track had could vary depending on what was chosen.
What appears to be the the full version of Gran Turismo 6 is on display at the Tokyo Motor Show, and gameplay footage has started emerging from attendees.
A few videos and impressions are rolling in from the Honda CR-Z promo event in Times Square today, but the GT5 demo on display is a little underwhelming. With that said, RavenFox of NeoGAF did catch a glimpse of High Speed Ring in the rain in the course selection menu – though it wasn’t actually raining when his race began.
Here’s our first look at the new Gran Turismo 5 “Weather Trailer” just revealed at the Tokyo Game Show 2010 Sony press conference. I’ll update this post immediately as soon as the HD version is available!
*UPDATE* Sony has updated their website, removing the comment about weather. The original version has been preserved in the screenshot above, which you can compare to the current version below. Thanks to Dave for letting me know!
An unfortunate set of circumstances required me to unplug for a few days, and I want to get everyone caught up with the latest batch of news over the past week or so. Frankly, there hasn’t been much going on in the world of Gran Turismo, but all of that is about to change with GamesCom 2010 coming up next week! Several GTPlanet members will be in attendance throughout the event, and we’re going to have more exclusive coverage than ever before – watch for more major announcements on that over the next few days. For now, here’s a quick summary of what you did (or…didn’t) miss:
Jokes were made when our inside man, amar212, first mentioned a track editor coming to GT5 more than a year ago. Today, he gets the last laugh, as president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has confirmed “track creating and sharing”, “go-karting”, and a “weather system” is coming to the game in an interview posted directly on the official PlayStation UK website. Here’s the relevant portion of the article:
Our own user Digital-Nitrate has discovered an early copy of the February issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, and it’s got some pretty incredible news! Indy (“IRL”) cars have been confirmed, in addition to “weather effects, as well as night racing for all tracks”! Here’s a nice little summary of everything that’s discussed and confirmed:
In the latest issue of the Official UK PlayStation Magazine, Kazunori Yamauchi made yet another statement about the questionable status of Gran Turismo 5’s weather system:
