Takuma Miyazono: Interview with the Best Gran Turismo Player in the World

GTPlanet recently had the chance to chat with newly crowned Gran Turismo World Series Nations Cup champion Takuma Miyazono — and arguably the best Gran Turismo player of all time — following his victory in the world finals in Amsterdam.

Miyazono has always been a popular figure in the World Series, among fans and his fellow drivers, and in winning the 2024 title he’s become the most successful driver in the seven seasons that the flagship esports series has been running.

His Nations Cup win is actually his second, with the first being the triple-crown season in 2020 when he became the only driver to sweep all titles in one year. He joins Coque Lopez on that tally of two Nations Cups, with the Spaniard also claiming one title as part of the only year where it was a team event.

However, Miyazono also has two Manufacturers Cup titles — 2020 and 2022 — and won the Toyota Gazoo Racing GT Cup in 2020 as well. His 2024 success thus moves him past the four-title record he shared with Lopez and Igor Fraga and out into the lead on his own with five.

We caught up with Miyazono as he was preparing for the 2024 Gran Turismo Race of Champions. That’s an annual event held at Polyphony Digital’s offices which brings together World Series champions from around the world for a race-off. You’ll be able to watch that on the official Gran Turismo channels from January 1, 2025.

Despite being busy preparing for this year-ending event, Miyazono was available to answer our questions about his latest success, how winning the series in-person as opposed to the online 2020 event differed, and how being a Gran Turismo World Series champion has changed his life so far — including being recognized at racing events in the real world.

We also heard his plans for 2025, as he looks to add to his Gran Turismo trophy cabinet as well as take part in more real-life racing throughout the year.
