Fans of the open road rejoice! Today Ubisoft has announced that a sequel to MMO racer The Crew is coming.
In an unexpected tweet on the official account, The Crew 2 promises to go “beyond the road”. That’s about the extent of the information at this point, but the tagline has us intrigued.
The first game was very ambitious, featuring a scaled-down version of the entire United States. In addition, The Crew boasted a varied car roster and an RPG-like approach to upgrades.
At launch, a lot of hype came from the idea of racing state-to-state taking on group-based challenges along the way. Initial reception to The Crew was mixed, but the game seems to have found its legs: earlier this year, the title celebrated 12 million online players.
The Crew may have had its issues on release but a slew of post-launch content kept fans coming back for more. Developer Ivory Tower released two substantial expansions: Wild Run and Calling All Units.
Wild Run focused on increasing the off-road offerings from the title, as well as revamped visuals across the board. Meanwhile, CAU introduced more in-depth cop presence and challenges. Just under a year ago, The Crew was free on XB1 thanks to Games with Gold.
Despite not hitting it off with everyone, Ubisoft and Ivory Tower clearly have faith in The Crew’s brand. The Crew 2 will have to build on the foundations of the original title to ignite players’ interest again.
With E3 just around the corner, The Crew 2 will be present at Ubisoft’s keynote presentation, which will happen Monday, June 12 at 2000 UTC. With pretty much no information revealed so far, we’re definitely interested to see how this one pans out. GTPlanet will have more information as it comes in.
