Toyota Gazoo Racing is gearing up for its own GT Sport esports competition next month in Malaysia.
Billed as the Toyota Velocity Esports Championship, the competition will kick off Friday, September 21. Unlike other events though, this one is short, taking up only the weekend.
For the event racers will use none other than the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept. The Supra made its way onto GT Sport after its debut at this year’s Geneva Auto Show. We’re still in the dark about the production Supra — but at least we know about its BMW cousin.
As for the course, drivers will make their way to Japan in the digital realm. There, they’ll take on one of the country’s most famous course, Suzuka Circuit.
This mainstay of the Gran Turismo series since GT4 comes in a 3.6 miles long. It also features several tricky corners and long straights that will let the Supra really stretch its legs.
Unlike some other Esports series, the rules for the competition are pretty straightforward. Up to 400 players will get 15 minutes to set up their vehicle, then 30 minutes to set the fastest time. At the end of the day on Saturday, 20 of the fastest drivers will get an invite for Sunday’s race.
During the semi-final rounds, two groups of 10 drivers will race in head-to-head matchups. The top five from each round will then advance to the final round. To determine their position on the starting grid each of the final 10 drivers will get a qualifying run.
For the final, racers will do 10 laps with one mandatory pit stop. Whoever crosses the line first will snag some pretty nice prizes.
So what are those prizes? The 10 racers from the final race will take home a piece of the RM 60,000 ($14,500) purse. First place will walk away with RM 20,000 ($4,800), second with RM 10,000 ($2,400), and third RM 5,000 ($1,200). The other seven drivers will get RM 2,000 ($600) each.
According to the rules you do need to reside in Malaysia at the time of the competition. Also, drivers need to be at least 18 years of age to enter.
If you’re interested in competing, the event will take place at the Sunway Pyramid in Subang Jaya. You can check out all the details on the official site and you can register here.
