Weekly Rewind: Things Are Heating Up

It was a busy seven days around the ‘Planet last week. Not only did we kick the week off in a drive in a supercar, but we got surprising bits of news on GT SportForza Motorsport 7, and Project CARS 2.

The latest Gran Turismo’s online aspect is only a small percentage of the whole package, according to its creator. Over in the land of Forza, one of the world’s biggest automakers’ road cars have exited stage right. And PCARS2, the title that’s set to launch before the other two? We’ve heard there’ll be visual perks for future owners of the uber-Xbox.

Summer might be into its second half, but in the world of sim racing, things are just heating up.

Did you miss anything? We’re going to dive back into the biggest stories from the past week, so kick back and read on.

GT Sport Online Experience Only Around 15% of Total Game

Speaking at the PlayStation Experience event in Malaysia last weekend, Kazunori Yamauchi revealed an interesting number for GT Sport. Despite prior appearances suggesting otherwise, competitive online will only account for roughly 15% of the total game.

While the estimation is sure to raise more questions than answers, if true, this will quell worries that GT Sport prioritizes online play over all else. With 85% remaining, we’re left wondering how much of the offline experience is on offer. Are there any more surprises in store that Polyphony Digital has yet to reveal? With Gamescom around the corner we won’t have to wait very long to find out.

Project CARS 2 Looks Even Better on Xbox One X Compared to PS4 Pro

Sim racers planning on getting Microsoft’s new pumped-up Xbox will be getting the best-looking version of Project CARS 2 on consoles. The news came from Slightly Mad Studio’s Stephen Viljoen in an interview with Trusted Reviews. Viljoen stressed gameplay mechanics were prioritized over visual fidelity. Despite the sacrifice to ensure the driving experience is the same across the board, he noted a “significant, a noticeable improvement” for the One X.

It isn’t yet clear in what ways the Xbox One X version of PCARS2 will stand above the PS4 Pro version. We won’t know until November, when the system launches. Of course, the game arrives much earlier: September 22, on both platforms (and PC).

Forza Motorsport 7 Will Not Feature Production Toyotas

Okay, this isn’t from the seven days, but it’s still a shock. As feared some time ago, Turn 10 has confirmed Forza Motorsport 7 will not feature Toyota production cars. Beyond the brand’s racing cars, only the Hilux Arctic Truck will prominently feature in Forza 7 — though its inclusion is likely due to separate licensing.

Regardless this is becoming a worrying trend. Last year a similar announcement came in the form of Volkswagen being cut from Forza Horizon 3. While the People’s Car company has returned for FM7, we shudder to think what brand this could affect next time around.

Picture of the Week

This week’s featured images comes to us courtesy of ViscousTraction and features the Mercedes CLK-GTR. Uniquely, the CLK-GTR owes plenty to McLaren’s F1 GTR. With a V12 engine powering the rear wheels, the road-legal racer is perfect for the Australian Outback.

Video of the Week

Three World Champions with four titles between them battling for position on lap one of the Australian GP in 2006? Yes, please. The championship-winning Renault R26 will feature in F1 2017 in two weeks time. Aside from the V8 symphony, its presence here is obvious.

Roll on August 25.

This Week’s Other Highlights

The Last Lap

It’s been a while since we’ve last spoke and while things are largely the same, August is a transitioning period. With a number of racing games soon to be in the wild — beginning this month no less — the year is taking a turn for the better.

Gamescom is barely over a week away. The Cologne-based games exhibition will likely introduce even more insanity as we approach September. All in all, the next couple of weeks are going to be interesting.

Until next week, keep racing!
