I don't know what caused it, I was using it just yesterday. Now the thing won't read disks. Its just like the 1st PS2 that I had, the origional design. So I thought that it might be the lens itself, dirty, so I cleaned it. Still no problem. Has anyone had the same experience?

yes a friend of mine and me had the exact same thing that's now a half year ago he popped it in last week and it worked really weird

I have the same problem! my slim won't play gt4 only....but reads everything else fine....is that the same with you....maybe i play gt4 too much leaving it on overnight b-specin enduro's

My slim PS2 hasn't skipped a beat yet, I have had it for over two years already, the two old-style PS2'S that I have gone through died around that mark. Works just like the day I got her! :) I don't know what the problem with your slimline system is, but it's most likely an isolated problem and nothing to do with the type of PS2 it's played on. I wish you the best! 👍

I don't know why everyone has a problem with the thier ps2 I had mine for three yrs i still have yet to exprience a problem.mine works fine.

my freind has a PS2 Slimline & it won't read discs the is just a black sreen not even the PS2 menu comes up

what could be the problem?

The only thing I can think of is if the lens is out of alignment. I have an old PS2 I bought 2nd hand, and it would never read GT4 - It read all the other games okay.

GT4 is a dual layer DVD, whereas most other games are single layer. If the laser lens is out of alignment, it may not be able to focus on the disc properly (especially the 2nd layer). I eventually opened up my PS2 and adjusted the lens - there are tutorials on the net on how to do this - and after about 6 or 8 notches, it runs like a champ. If your PS2 is still under warranty, it might be worth seeing if you can get it serviced. If it's out of warranty and you're game, you could try adjusting the laser and see if it works...

Hmm. Don't know. If the PS2 is spending all its time trying to read the disc, then it may not run through its startup.

The original problem (first post) I would guess to be the lens, else the software of something else is fried. If even the browser menu won't come up, then I'd say you have a problem with the built in software. I don't know how the built-in software works on PS2, whether it's some sort of hard drive or actual ROM (memory chip), but if the software gets corrupted, then the whole device will cease to function correctly. I work with mobile phones at the moment and I see quite a few problems from software malfunctions.

If it comes up with the browser menu but won't read discs (or specifically won't read the GT4 disc) then I'd say the laser is out of alignment.

If it won't come up at all, I'd say you have a software problem. That's all I can think of. Maybe do a google search for troubleshooting...

This has been taken up a couple of times before.
Either, the disc has to be cleaned, the lens has to be cleaned or your PS2 is playing it's last tunes.

Read stickies, read other FAQ's, look here, here, and search next time, before you make a new thread. It's even a unique search before posting menu in the /GTP Forums/Gran Turismo/Gran Turismo 4, to avoid all these threads.

Maybe this will help... A lot. As I said, search first.

I've been using my 1st gen ps2 since I got it in 2000, still works great. Left it on overnight for mannny enduros :D

man the slimline is a waste of time because it's a peice of crap

i saw an old poster in a shop that said:

"The new look ps2"

"Plays every play station game"

"Plays every play station 2 game"

it is not true but i thought it was funny how it said it plays every ps2 game

what a joke:lol:

mine is the first gen playstation. picked it up for $800AUD when it first came out. didnt have any problems with it untile a few months ago where it didnt read GT4 every time. i was ready to buy another new slimline ps2, but i read a tutorial that the lens might be dirty. i opened it up using the tutorial that was posted on this forum and cleaned the lens. put it back together and it runs like new.

I never had any problems with my original PS2(that came with the GT3 Bundle). I haven't had any problems with my PSTwo(slim) that I got like year and half ago.

But how the problem revolves around GT4 game scares me. That's the only game I play, these days. :nervous:

Painful? I just ran Nurb 24 hr, and when I got home, it was the dreaded red disc error.

I haven't come across that one. I do occasionally get the red spinning dial on the loading screen, which means the PS2 has its thumb up its... instead of loading. I find in this case if I open and close the cd tray it forces the PS2 to re-read the disc, and often it will then keep going and finish loading.

Yeah i have problems with slim line, sometime it won't read a disc properly, reset it and hey presto, until it comes up with a new problem!
