Dude, Pako, how do you afford all that stuff? Does the Blue Onion have a Japanese cult-following?

He robs liquor stores on the side. He flashes his "big guns" and they give up the money.

Hey, awesome score on the 60GB, Pako! Did you buy it off eBay?

Wait Pako, so you just walked in and got one? Or did you get one held for you?

Very cool congrats to both of you. Any chance you guys could post a screen shot of the COD3 or F1?

Congrats guys!👍... I'm so tempted to go ahead and pre-order mine now... Please (both of you) keep us posted with your first/second/nth impressions, pics etc...

Perhaps one of the nice GTP staff can turn this thread into a general 'I've got a PS3' showing off thread?

March 2007 suddenly seems a long time off :indiff:

That's a good idea, but since Mr. Ebiggs is a Premium member, it is his prerogative...

ebiggs - turn off java script and you will reduce freezes a lot .

Nice! I didnt realise the PS3 had an internet browser!

Is it like the PSP browser or more like IE?

Man I drove many places and came up empty this morning, EBgames n games stop has lines all over the place again and I know these places are not getting more than 10 systems. best buy was waay to crowed to even ask if they had any systems. I mite as well get one for $800 off Ebay if im goin to spend $200(exaggeration) in gas trying to find one, dis here sucks

I fold, will wait toll january i guess

Damn, PS3.. make some nice pics i'm getting bored of the box ^^ can't wait till it launches here, bleh march is so far away..

it makes my PS2 look silly >.<''

Well, from what I've seen from videos, the PS3 browser is similar to the PSP's, but there's several major tweaks with it (tabs, etc).

Once Java is turned off, the PS3 browser runs a lot smoother. Java really cripples it, so if you go to a lot of Java enabled sites, PS3 is best left alone for browsing, however, for sites like GTP and other forums, it's not bad at all, esp when you're just browsing.

Almost identical to the PSP.

Jeremy: The freezing wasn't related to the websites, it froze whenever I was going through the predictive text to find a word.

F1 Demo: Overall, I'm unimpressed. With all of the driving aids turned off, the cars were extremely easy to handle. There was hardly any understeer unless you were really just overcooking the corner, and the TCS killed any thought of oversteer. If you can use the gas, brake, gears, and steering you won't have any trouble with the game. I like rFactor's CTDP mod much better. The graphics are pretty weak, especially for a next-gen game. Hopefully that is just because it is the demo. The screen vibrates too much in my opinion in cockpit view.

I had no freezes at all yesterday and the system was on for around 14 hours straight. It also reads USB memory sticks just fine. I'm not sure if you can save to one or not, but I hope so.

Edit: Just hooked up the G25. The PS3 seems to have no problem with it, but none of my games support it. The F1 and Motorstorm demos do not support wheels, and F1 doesn't even have options for controls. However, the wheel did work in both games, just not as it should. I had to use the corresponding buttons as if it was a SIXAXIS. The steering did work. It locked to 200 degrees in F1 and seemed to work fine. In Motorstorm it felt like it should have been in 200 degrees. It was similar to playing GT3 in 900 degree mode.

Edit2: It does NOT work at all with GT4. The wheel won't calibrate and the power light keeps flashing.

The F1 demo was pretty impressive to me, visually. The textures are really good, reflections are wonderfully simulated (not with an overly plastic tone like most next gen racers have displayed) and the visual effects are unmatched. I have yet to see a game that handles so many other cars, heat waves from the exhaust, dust, tire smoke, and motion blur, without skipping more than a few frames.

I am unimpressed that this build does not have damage enabled. I will wait until the final build before I pass judgement, but overall, it's way too easy, but it's very easy on the eyes.

Congrats to both of you!

Pako, how's it look on 1080i? I've heard that there's been some confusion surrounding that, and it's all I've got.

The 1080i issues is simply that some games do not support 1080i. This would not be an issue, however, the PS3 does not currently upscale signals below 1080i. What will happen instead, is that if your TV only does 1080i and the game is 720p, it will downscale to 480p. An oversight, sure, but given that HDTV penetration is so low right now, in the long run I don't think it will be much of an issue.

Ok, so it's a game-specific issue and not a PS3 hardware or software issue?

So if the game is compatible at 1080p, then 1080i will work, but if it's only 720p, it'll appear at 480i/p?

Well, to an extent, yes, it's a "game-specific" issue. It depends on what resolutions the game supports. All PS3 games will support 720p. However, if the resolution for your PS3 is set higher than that by default (i.e. your system settings are set to 1080i/p) and the game does not support it, then the PS3 will downscale to 480p. The reason for this is because currently, the PS3 will not upscale a 720p image to 1080i/p. This is planned for the future, it's just not known when.

You're contradicting yourself there, bub.

The issue is with the PS3, end of story. It doesn't have a scaler. At least not one that works worth a damn. Sorry to have to say this, but the 360's got the PS3 beat in this area.

It doesn't need one. The Cell Processor is more than adept with scaling and video processing. As is the RSX. This is why it's a software issue. The PS3's hardware can handle it fine, however, the firmware that it is currently equipped with does not.

Granted, a scaler reduces the work load on the GPU, but the results are often less than impressive.

Might I add, again, that the current penetration for HDTV's is minimal, so the amount of people this will effect is not drastic. Sure, those people will be left in the cold, but so were the people who bought:

The first PS2
The first DVD player
The first DS (screen)
The first PSP (button issue)
The first Blu-Ray and HD-DVD Player

People act as though this is not a common occurance. Early adopters always suffer, because their pre-emptive purchases leave them with hardware that is not fully compliant with the standards of tommorrow. Sure, hardware and standards always change, but with any research 4 years ago, you would have known 720p (and even 1080p for that matter) was on the way. So, while it's negligence on Sony's part, I don't think it's a huge issue, especially when nearly all HDTV's coming out within the last year and a half support 720p.

I brought this up on another board, and here I am bringing it up again..

Isn't it amazing that when the PS3 has a feature that's lacking, suddenly it's no longer important? No one uses it, etc.

It's the same thing with the rumble feature. It's been a mainstay for gaming for more than a decade, and suddenly it's "just a gimmick" and "not important" when the PS3 doesn't have it.

It's the same thing with 1080p, too. People trying to claim that the X360's 1080p isn't "real" 1080p, whatever that means. Just because Sony said they were the "only ones with true HD" in their console. How many 1080p games at launch?

Am I right, Jeremy? The PS3 can do no wrong?

From what I've heard, the X360's 1080p in games is upconverted. I don't know if it goes from 1080p in the dashboard to 720p in games, or if it's 1080p universal. If it's the former, and games like Splinter Cell, Blue Dragon, and Lost Planet are 1080p, then those 1080p games are most likely rendering in real time. If it's the latter, then they're probably rendering in real time anyway. But I'm not the most knowledgeable on this matter, so don't take this as fact.

As for PS3 1080p games at launch, NBA 07, NBA 2K7, Ridge Racer 7 (too many 7s!) spring to mind. Resistance supposedly had 1080p running real smooth in the single player, but it supposedly bogged down the multiplayer, so they removed it.

As for everything else, I'm too tired to think about it, and I'm not in the mood to burn at the stake. Ducks should be lightly cooked, not burnt.

Congrats to both of you!

Sorry for taking so long to reply....been kinda busy. ;) Well...So far, I have found that 720P looks quite a bit better than 1080i. My TV doesn't support 1080P so I can't verify that. Originally I had set the systems resolution to 1080i but Resistance - Fall of Man suggested a higher resolution of "720P" was recommended. I've switched to 720P and have noticed a better picture (less image blur, smoother and crisper graphics) in all of the games and demo's I have tried.

Games Currently Tried:
Ultimate Alliance
Ridge Racer 7
Resistance - Fall of Man
Tiger Woods - PGA Tour 07

Demo's Tried:
Motor Storm
Formula One Champion Addition

It does have damage. I think it is toggled in race options just before the race starts.

I wonder if we were playing the same game or not though. I thought the textures (especially the grass in the replay) looked very average.

As I understand it, the 360 will upscale 720p games to 1080p. This makes it no different than playing a 720p PS3 game on a 1080p television. As far as I know, the dashboard is rendered in 1080p. And, the feature gives future developers the option of having the game render in full 1080p. It's essentially the same sort of "1080p" support that the PS3 has.

I just got done calling the dozen local stores here in SoCal that will have the PS3. Nada. Only two stores received a new shipment in and they're still on the shelves. They're 20GB PS3 consoles, and I don't want those. Besides, the lady said they'd be gone by the time I drove there, anyway. I believe her.

So, ten stores haven't been restocked, yet. The two that did get them in got the 20GB model only. Asking when they'll get more PS3s always gets me a "not 'til January" response.
