ATI have always had higher image quality than nVidia cards. In fact, not long back nVidia were caught cutting a few corners with anisotropic filtering to gain some extra FPS.

So, the general consensus when buying video cards is:

"Want speed, go with nVidia. Want pretty pictures, go with ATI."

Yeah, that's what I figured and why I like ATi... although at this point since I'm using a VGA screen and not DVI it's not as it could be anyway so I'd probably never see a difference too. :grumpy:

Amd 64 2800+
ATI Radeon x800gto 256mb
1g of ram

Stock video card settings: 1379
OC (570 mem clock, 435 VPU clock): 1500

Flame-returns
Unless those pretty pictures contain detailed shadows (soft shadows) in which case it's nVidia all the way.
ATI can do soft shadows. I enabled it in FEAR, but disable it after about 2 seconds when I got sick of the horrible framerates. :P

i got 3813 on completely stock settings
then i oc'ed the cpu from 2400 to 2750(still on stock heatsink and i don't completely trust ASUS's PEG Technology...once i get the watercooling i'll crank the biznatch up...hell i might even try a 300% run or two.) and got it to 3818

Specs

CPU - AMD 4000+
GPU - 7800GTX still runnin original speed for both tests
ram - 1g
mobo - Asus A8N SLI premo

i got bored so i tinkered..

I found a couple things out..

I can't up my CPU higher than 139MHz's or else it won't boot.(140=magic #)
And I found a point of maximum gain on the PCI express' clock....(120MHz)

Here's the runs

score12je.jpg

CPU - 135
PCI - 110

CPU -139(both)

Crikey that's a bit of a result 👍 Got a little clock on the CPU in there as well, very nice :) Bet you're glad you went with the 1900 then?

I think I am. That score is a little misleading. I'm still waiting for my monitor to come in so I had one of my 15" LCD's hooked up. As a result, all the tests were run at 1024x768 which probably had a huge impact on the score. Down the road, once my pocket book recovers, I'll replace the MOBO with a crossfire edition and add a second x1900CE card. I waited for a month and nVidia couldn't deliver, others waited much, much longer.... ATI was prepared for their release, offered their flagship card at a lower price than nVidia's, offered more performance, and offered availability.

Ah, yeah i can imagine running the mark at 1024 would raise the score a bit. Well once you get the monitor try again. Am very interested to see what difference the resolution makes, might try it myself :)

Well, I am very excited with these results! I think I have found the right combination of software/hardware. I haven't over clocked anything and am running at cool, stock speeds. From my original specs from the last benchmarks, I have since added another x1900xt for a dual X1900XT Crossfire solution. I have also upgraded my ram to Corsair TWIN2048-3500LLPRO Matched Pair 2Gb's of ram with LED activity lights (makes me want a clear side on my case....), Anyways, I have passed the 8000 mark for a solid 8695 at 1280x1024 resolution. I see 9000+ very attainable with some clock settings.

Very happy, doing some gaming!

EDIT/UPDATE:
I just got done with a little tweaking on the FSB, Memory Voltages, and Video Cards Core Clock and Memory speeds. Without running into stability issues with stock cooling, all settings are pretty conservative, but I have broke the 9,000 point mark with this latest benchmark of 9,096! I am very, very, very happy with these results as these are the kind of results I would have expected, ore atleast hoped for.

I wish I could afford a PC that could get that kind of performance.

Here's my specs:

Dunno the mobo model offhand - it's an EPoX one with the nForce4 chipset (apparently that's the chipset to go for these days). It's actually an nForce4 Ultra chipset which sounds even better (I think it allows for vroom vroom fast SATA2 hd speeds).
Athlon64 3200+
2Gb RAM
256Mb 7600GT graphics card

And I scored just over 3000. Does that sound about right?

Either way, Oblivion looks fantastic and FEAR looks awesome.

@G.T: Gotta get past the dogs first. ;)

@KM: That's all the matters man! If your comp will do what 'you' want it to do then you have accomplished what most people could only hope for. 👍

Absolutely. You obviously had the will and the cash to go hog-wild and build a real kick-ass gaming PC. If I had the money to spare, I'd do the same, but as it is I'm perfectly happy to buy behind the technology curve and spent a decent amount of money for a PC that can run the latest games at an more than acceptable level.

I can get F.E.A.R. running at 1024x768 with 4X FSAA anti-aliasing and it never ducks below 20fps. That's more than good enough for me. Similarly, I can get Oblivion running at 1280x1024 with HDR on and it also keeps a good framerate and never lags when loading outdoor areas or slows when there's a bunch of bad guys or NPCs around. That's also more than good enough me. And those 2 games are pretty hard on your hardware and are the two I'm working on right now.

BTW, according to Microsoft's online games advisor, 90% of computers that have been tested are better than mine. When I tested my PC before upgrading (similar CPU, 1Gb single channel RAM, AGP 6600GT graphics card) it told me the exact opposite! Apparently I used to be better than 95% of other computers, but now I'm worse than 90% of them!

I just built a pretty nice comp for $1700.00
I hit 10720 heres my set up first attempt with OC 8800 gts video card.

Motherboard Name Abit AW9D-MAX
CPU Type DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
CPU Clock 3404.2 MHz (original: 2400 MHz, overclock: 42%)
2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM

Nvidia 8800 gts
GPU Clock 621 MHz (original: 513 MHz, overclock: 21%)
Memory Clock 945 MHz (original: 792 MHz, overclock: 19%)

Im still playing with it and fine tuning it. But not too bad with first attempt. 👍

That's an awesome score! Now if 3dMark06 will release a DX10 Vista patch, I'll run also....with my OC 8800GTX 768mb BFG card.

:)

Any ideas why my system only scored somewhere in the 4000s with a E6600, 7900GT, and 2GB of DDR2-800?

Low- or mid- 4000s, or high-4000s?

A bit odd if it's low to mid, but if it's high, I find it understandable...

Most people's components are OCed here anyway, which may explain it. Are yours?

... Try uninstall re-install?? idk :nervous:

Thanks Pako!

I cant seem to break 11000 mark.
updated score 10,966

I had a quick go with mine at 3.3ghz and got 11400. (with vista ultimate)

bit more left as i havnt touched ram/gfx and i didnt fine tune the cpu either.

Vista Ultimate 32bit
Antec 900
XFX 8800GTX OC'ed 600mhz
Core 2 Duo E6600
Asus P5N32-e SLI
Corsair CM2X1024-6400 (x2)
Silverstone 600w PSU
Sata DVD Burner
Creative Xtreme Gamer sound card
400gb HD
G5
G15
22" samsung monitor 226bw

Looking to get the cpu at a stable 3.2ghz and fine tune ram. Probably wont touch the gfx card as its OC'ed a bit already but see what happens.

However im after a stable gaming rig thats comfortable rather than a big oc'ed machine near the limits for benchmarking.

I wonder if having vista is restricting you from getting a higher score or if its enhancing the score in comparison to xp?

That's a great score 👍 That's also the identical spec to what i'm looking to upgrade to now. I'm going to grab an 8800gtx in a couple of months (just in time for Crysis :)) and see what that does to my 3D Mark score (currently 4766 -see below). Hopefully i can keep my 4800X2 chip and just upgrade the ram as it seems a bit early for a complete overhaul.

Your old computer is very similar to what i'm still running, how has the upgrade felt to you? Happy to working with that Duo chip? How's Vista handling it all?

Pako - Just noticed your post here, how is that 8800GTX running in your 4800X2 machine?

I really enjoy my new system and have it running at 3.4ghz at 1.35volts running 33C idle temps and barely over 40C load. Runs everything i own extremely fast and at full graphics.

Big improvement over my old machine, but that being said the old one still runs all the games at high settings, just not extra high with max resolution. So now i have 2x gaming machines lol
