While I haven't personally seen it, I could see someone with closer gears (more acceleration) getting higher, but then their lap time might suffer.

The following situation, IMO, is UNETHICAL, and should be pointed out in the rules:
At the start of free run, while approaching the left-to-right turn,.... what is the rule on cutting the corner (before the lap is started) to gain extra speed comming to the start line?

IMO, if your over 162 mph(260 k's) at the start line, your cutting the corner.

BOOM,... are you gonna allow this type of strategy to occur?

We went thru the same thing on the very first race we did w/ the denso at trial mountain where der alta asked:

I do have a question. this pertains to classifying a "Fast lap" There may be other tracks that this plays into, but Trial mtn. is one of hte easiest to gain a time advantage. Situation: I'm peaking the hill before the final chicane, and I've already clippede two walls. So at this point the run is invalid. so if I cut the grass one more time, I'm in no way violating the rules. However. Mowing hte grass through the chicane will give me a half second advantage for for the next lap. That second lap doesn't begin until the start/finish line is crossed.

and heres how boom responded:

Interesting point you bring up. Since there would be no way to prove what had happened on the lap prior, and your fastest lap is clean, then it cant be considered an illegal move. But I would certainly hope that everyone would run all there laps as cleanly as possible. :)

So there you go...unless booms stance has changed since then its alright to cut to the grass as long as your fastest lap is clean

I would like to discourage it and not allow it at all, and while rule #1 is no shortcutting, there is no real way to verify that someone had cut that corner on the lap prior to their best saved lap.

I agree that it is unethical, and should not be attempted.

RER brought up an interesting point. I havent been crossing the line any quicker than 156-158 mph so maybe that 162 mph barrier should be checked? Anyhow, Im sure all the drivers take pride in their times so I dont think there should be a problem.

But this brings something different up to mind. For all those people that submit fast times at RL or GT3Times, how can it be proven that they havent used a shorcut to have more speed? Besides TM, what other tracks allow this?

Trust me........ I have a decent recolection of these things after doing it everyday for almost 2 years now.

It cant be proven,... thats why it's such a shady subject. If we we're to ask the same quaetion at RL or TIMES,... I think they'd say that it's ok to vut the corner, cause there's no way to enforce not doing it.

But, for this competition,... I think we should be able to make a gentlmen(ladies)'s clause that says 'dont cut the corner'. Sound good?

And no,.. other than maybe wall riding at the SS courses, there's no other places, that I can think of, to pull that stratagy.

I would rather focus on nailing that combo every time as opposed to just blasting through the grass..............
Just my.02

920 is the max HP. Not sure what mileage it starts going down at, but the mileage only stays in the car if you save your game after racing.
What I did was gave the car all the upgrades then saved my game. Then each time I race I save the replays and settings but not the game. So whenever I start again, my Skyline has 0 miles.

Ok so I guess that if anything seems odd, we can check the "crossing the line speed" to make sure no shortcut was taken. Thats about the only thing we can do in case not everyone here wants to be a gentleman. But like I said before, Im pretty sure everyone here is proud of their times and I dont think anyone would cheat to that point to gain a couple tenths instead of trying harder and gaining it thru cornering skill. This is my 0.02

On this short cut subject...

Ive noticed that we could do this too, as its tempting to do.

However, I feel, as well as most of you, that this practice is unethical.

Its cheating flat out, and even if it cant be proven... (oh wait, maybe it can be)

Should we run into a lap that is under suspicion, lets just compare all of the replay speeds and see how the lap in question compares.

What ever the case, I say its wrong to cut that corner.

As for progress.

Im down to a save with a 15.?/35.0/1.00.?

Its still faster than my last best lap, so its all good at the moment.

till next time...

(oh yeah, Im gonna go look at my fastest replays and see what the speeds are at the finish line...)
===================================
Edit:
==================================
ok, a couple of things...

1. the 162 mph limit is a good mark... If I can cross that line at 155 I will be happy, as my fastest replays are at the 151 mark.

2. I just ran the 34.9 a couple of times... (that means things are looking better)

3. all prospects of actually tuning this car to perfection are out the window.

Now Im down to the generic oversteer settings.

4/20 springs
-2/-2 toe
min df in rear
etc.

Its working too.

Since I changed from the old "find a great mix of settings" to the "max is all out for oversteer," I have dropped atleast a half second.

More importantly though, is the possible time I can lose off of my current best lap. (due to the new settings.)

back later with any updates.
==================================
I just ran my best lap by any means.

1.00.3 t3 (which isnt the best t3 for me in this weeks race)

However, my best previous was a 1.00.6 (I think) and this was .3 ahead of that at t3.

Yet at the finish, it was a over .7 ahead of the previous best.

Ive still got time to take off. (with in my own limits... not time to take off compared to what other people are doing)

I put down a 34.9 on that lap, and I hit a 34.8 before that, so I know there is atleast 1 tenth to take off.

Then with the progress we all make when we stick to the race for the whole week.... well, Im thinking 59.5 is a good mark to aim for this week. (for me, although I dont know if I will make it)

anyway... so, yeah, ummm, Ive got a clean keeper that Im happy with for the time being.

till later on.... cya.

Wow - this is difficult :embarrassed:

I've finally upgraded my GT-R to full power and started to tweak the settings. So far my best times are pretty embarassing, and these aren't even 100% clean...

T1: 16.480
T2: 36.855
T3: 1.03.054
..over 3 seconds over the best T3 time
:banghead:

I'm still trying to kill the understeer, and was wondering what's the best rear wing setting? Is it better to trim it out as much as possible in order to bias the downforce to the front and hence improve front turn-in grip, or leave it at the default setting??

EDIT:

Some more tweaks, and another 20 laps, and and I'm starting to be a bit more competitive:
T1: 16.1xx
T2: 36.0xx
T3: 1.02.1xx

Still not 100% clean, but only 1 tiny mistake this time. I'm still running almost default springs/dampers and roll bar settings, so I'll mess about with them tomorrow...

I have yet to win this stupid car

I keep getting the Mines and everything else but the friggin Nismo :irked:

EDIT:

:D just got it, now to get some laps in

Nah, you got nothing to be embarrased about BlazingDragon. Don't be discouraged by the times you see posted here. Most of us have been doing this sorta thing now for months, even years. You'll catch up after a bit more

There's probably a couple others here who have times similar to yours, but at least you have the guts to post 'em

As for the DF setting, it's just a matter of personal preference. You can see from the setups above that some like it all the way down, some all the way up, and some in between.

Thanks :) And I'm slowly getting better. I wish I had found about GTP and this series sooner, though my wife and daughter would probably beg to differ ;)

The Skyline / Trial Mountain combination is one of my least favourite combinations - I really didn't enjoy License B8.
I'll take anyone on in a stock Mini Cooper at Laguna Seca

I'm having trouble with this too. Driving a 920hp Skykline @ Trial Mountain si definitly not the best way for me to beggin competing in this series as I usually favour much less powerful cars.
keeping this thing off the grass especially in those first "corners" is not easy and I can't get bellow T1: 16.xxx!
Anyway, I have a clean lap save that I'm not too embarrased of, so maybe i'll leave it at that cause it's getting on my nerves!

i really do enjoy driving this car even though it is a little fiesty. so far 15.4/34.8/1'00.2 there's a bit of time to be found but i doubt i'll be the one to find it.

Has anyone tried running T8's in front and T7's or T6's in back? I haven't yet (just got home from work), but it might help.

well, finally put down a few laps tonight, and i mean a few, cuz my attention has mostly been given to trying to get my computer up and running tonight after installing a new motherboard and processor. My initial times look pretty promising, im hoping w/ some more setting work and practice they'll come down quite a bit more, best save i have right now is unclean but JUST barely...i just brushed the wall coming out of the right hander before the T3 turn...it wasnt very much, but enough to knock my speed down a few mph, so i knew i hit it cuz i had full throttle at the time. but anyways, the splits on the lap were 15.5/34.9/1'00.6 Im using T13R's settings, except i set the LSD to 5/15 - 5/40 - 5/10. It really seemed to help my times out significantly. I actually kinda like driving this car, although it definently is a skyline...if you really wanna forcefully go into a turn youve gotta be sure to whip that tail around or else its understeer city

::EDIT:: Just got a new best time, and this ones clean. 15.7/35.1/1'00.3 ....first 2 splits are down from my best, but the overall lap time was about .600 faster. It probably wouldve been quicker, if not for a HUGE powerslide i did coming into the left hand turn at the bottom of the hill after the t3 (that turn is evil) Looked AWESOME on the replay tho...hehe

Well, since the general consensus this week has been 'there is no good setup for this car', I decided to throw all my setup logic out the window and come up with a crazy setup of my own. This one resulted in T's of 15.468/34.653/59.841 and took a full second off my previous best clean lap (even after 4 rum & Cokes):

SR 20/20 (max)
RH 77/77 (min)
Shocks all 10s
Cam 4/3
Toe 0.5/-1.5
Stab 7/7
BB 24s
LSDs all 5s
Gears 3.700/21
DF .60 (max)
ASM 0
TCS 1
VCD 10%

So far I got 15.908/35.108/1'00.594 clean.

The tire thing didn't help me although the 7's gave it just a bit of oversteer that might help someone.

I got completely off the wall settings as well. Not even gonna bother posting them 'cause they're so weird.

I know how you feel...:banghead:

I'm still struggliing to get to grips with 900 bhp as well - I think I'd be a bit more competitive if we only had 500 or so...
However, this is suppoosed to be a challenge, so bring it on!! - there's still 5 days to go :D

The promising thing is is that I know I still have loads of room for improvement, it's just a case of getting to grips with the car...

Thanks - I think I'm going to try these tonight and see how I do :)

Do you think I need the 4 rum and cokes too?? :D

I had my first real attempt at this, seems I'm right in line with everyone 'cept for Eggo, he's loooking like the top contender this week. My best clean so far is:

15.750 / 34.973 / 1.00.160

I know my T1 kinda sucks, but it looks like I'm moving pretty fast to make up about .200 between T1 and T2. At least I know where I need to concentrate my effort this week. My T1 times always stink on Trial Mtn. though, so no surprise. Here's my setup based off Eggman's first setup:

13.0/15.7
89/95
5/7/5/10
3/2
.5/-.5
3/3

24/22

LSD 5/5/5 + 5/20/5
Gears Auto 30

DF .40
VCD 30%
TCS 3

GoKents mentioned a goal of 59.5 for T3 which is about what I was thinking, sounds good enough for CFM.

Well my new goal for a T3 is going to be of around 59.2 because all thats left to work on is most probably the first sector. So if I can drop my time close to a 15.0, then that 7 tenths should be reflected on my T3 which would bring it down to 59.2. So this is ideally my goal.

They won't neccesarily make you drive any faster, but they help calm the nerves after driving around in POS car for a couple hours ;)

Every time I think I've done well, I check here and well..........
My best clean save is 15.839/34.995/1'00.395. That's 1/2 a second behind Mr.eggmann!:( It could take me a whole day just to make up that time. Maybe I should try some Rum and Cokes.

I'm making some progress with the car setup and though at this point the car is highly unstable, it is serving up it's best times. if i get it totally together, she should be rather competative by weeks end. best clean so far is 15.8, 34.7, 1.00.011

there are a few more setupchanges i need to try tonight but first i have to go to work :(

So I take it that whatever changes you make to a car in Gran Turismo mode, will be carried over to any race in Arcade Mode ? I have not played the Arcade mode that much, so I was just wondering, with all you guys going on about setups ect.
