GT3 International Street Car Challenge: Week 3 The Streets of Tokyo
Created in cooperation by Azuremen and TankSpanker

Were going to Tokyo for week 3, Tokyo R246 II to be exact.

However, unlike the two previous weeks, we will not be running all classes. This is due to the near onset of GT4 in North America. We are expecting a large decrease in the interest displayed in OLR in GT3 when it does emerge. So to keep the majority of entrants running against each other we have temporarily closed STS since it seemed the least popular category anyways.
There has been a slight formula change to the STA to compromise this, and also to mix it up a little and get a few new creations running. A penalty has been introduced in STB to try and keep the times closer in that class.
Gotta keep all you guys on your toes. Hopefully it doesnt inconvenience anyone too much.

And to answer the questions, yes we are still running in GT3 - we werent about to try and create a challenge in a game we dont have yet. We likely wont move to GT4 until mid-late March once the PAL has also been made available, and everyone has had a fair chance to earn some credits and make some progress into the game, etc.

The classes this week:

Street Touring B - STB
Minimum PWR: 4.5
Budget: $70000
Tires: Sports (supplied free)
Penalties: Camaro Z28 has Mimimum PWR of 4.750

Street Touring A - STA
Minimum PWR: 2.750
Budget: $110000
Tires: Sports (Supplied free)

Street Touring Challenge - STC
This week is an Evo Challenge! Emphasis this week will once again be put on getting the most performance for your money that is, the budget is a bit tight again. The twist this week comes from tire selection. All tires compounds are now available for PURCHASE. Sports tires will still be free, but if you choose to go to a stickier tire their cost will be deducted from your remaining budget. No normal tires please. You will be given $90000 to purchase and build the fastest Evo for Tokyo R246 II that you possibly can. All Evos on the dealer screen are fair game be it an RS or GSR, or the TME if you prefer. Rally cars are out.

STC Summary:
1 Lancer Evo (RS, GSR, or TME)
4 tires sports tires are free, other compounds may be purchased
$90000 minus car cost
Open PWR

For the first time ever, we have an Individually Issued Challenge (lets abbreviate it as B4C to follow the naming he gave it)
it comes from Suzuki, and goes as follows:

Car-WRX STI Sedan('02 bug eyed version)

Modifications

Race suspension, Race Brakes, Sport transmission, Race LSD, STG 1 & 2 weight reduction and last but not least, an oil change.

Tires

Super Slicks (T2)

So this should make for 316 hp right after oil change, and the weight should be 1272.

you may discuss T times, but NOT final lap times. PM all final times to me, Suzuki by the end of this comp.

A reminder to keep the discussion this week limited to split-times, and tuning discussion. No posting final lap-times please.

Final Times are due by midnight NA Pacific Time, Friday, February 25th (or, 8:00am GMT, Saturday the 26th). Please PM them to either myself of Azuremen. Please PM times for the B4C to Suzuki.

Hopefully this weeks competition is as enjoyable for all as I heard last weeks Miata challenge was for some. I know this track doesnt rank very highly on some peoples lists, but it does have a decent mix of technical elements and straights.

Edit: I have updated the Calculator and added a Bonus/Penalty field for PWR and Budget that will allow you to generate the required changes in STA and STB for this week.

no, alternate compounds are only available for the STC

edit: clarified this point in the first post. I wondered if this would be a sticking point this week. Glad to get it cleared up now rather than later.

I'd like to join this. I just have a STB and working on an STC car now so far. Is the week 3 leader board up yet? And do we post T times here or elsewhere?

Also I have a suggestion: (I realize I just got here, but) What if we only discussed T2 times instead of all T times It gives you a good idea of your compitition and also leaves you guessing and competitive. It seems like you are giving too much away with all the T times. Just my opinion anyways.

This is a great series, glad I found it to tide me over till GT4 comes out. Can't wait till you guys start up for GT4.

not sure if the week 3 leaderboard is up yet, look in Tanks sig for the link for the leaderboard. you may post T times ONLY here. i think all T times should be discussed. just to see if your doing slower than others in that sector.

Actaully, only Discussing T1 is a good thought for this week, and one I hadnt considered. I only wish that I had been the one to think of it and not you. hehe

The track is divided into 3 sectors (only 2 splits). The final sector only contains 1 corner, so giving it is a fiar indication of your laptime. I will make the suggested changes.

Edit: oh, and I had stamped Suzuki's challenge with my approval before he posted, so no problems there. I won't be adding the times to the leaderboard as they come in, but Suzuki can handle his own times and make a results post at the end of the week in the results thread (as we discussed).

I just checked and yeah after T2 on Tokyo there IS only one corner. I was thinking that was T3 on such a long course. I actually thought the T1 location was T2, before actually looking, LOL. I guess you'd have to play it by ear on each course.

I hope someone will post one soon so I have a refference. I still may change cars. Idunno

Hey suzuki, Is it OK to substitute the LSD for either an AYC or VCD unit? since I don't use LSD at all when I tune AWD. Good challenge BTW.

thanks! sorry but no you cannot sub lsd for ayc or vcd. i feel that the lsd, when tuned right, can have a greater effect on the cars handling than ayc/vcd. i want this to be a racer/tuners race. not a budget race. just to give you guys a break on having to find a legal combination of parts to give you a specific PWR. easy to setup(parts wise) and easy on your bank. i also made this race to get thoes who arent that great at tuning, to get more fimiliar with everything. the lsd can either make your car understeer, oversteer, or be nuetral.
ill try to come up with a challange every week.(unless someone else would like to make one of course)

STB T1 @ 43.146 And again I don't know if I wanna keep this car yet. I'm trying some different cars and don't know if they can keep up. SO POST SOME DAMN TIMES!!! hehe

B4C T1 @ 41.707 after a coupla of laps.

This is a very pointless time to go on however as its just 40 seconds of a 1min 40odd second lap.

T2 can be improved by another .5 - 1 second at least.

Modified my amercian missile, (wacked on sports exhaust, chip and custom LSD), went from p/w of 3.004 to p/w of 2.755

, $108,xxx. Might have to ditch the STB car and get a mr2.

Now dont get me wrong the finish is just 1 corner from T2, but its a very big straight, if the run on the corner is only 2kph different the finish time will be .3 at least different. T1 is not a good enough measure to know how fast you are. Who really cares if your lap time can be sorta worked out, if your faster your faster, if your not your not. No matter what T times are disclosed that wont change the fact, its just you might actually have a decent clue whether you are going good or not. I say let T2 be in, but hey thats my opoion, i dont care either way, I have other means of finding out whether im quick or not.

I completely see what you're saying there Small_Fryz. However, with only 1 turn before the finish (regardless of the straight length) it still makes me reluctant to reinstate it. If nothing else it might make the laptimes a bit more indicative of what the individual entrants feel is a competitive time for them to be running - and they wont be aiming for some magic time set by someone else. If it does remove any of the fun or competitiveness from this week's running for anyone then I appologize for it now, and hope that this does not become the case.

Anyways, we'll see how it goes. If the reaction to it by the end of the week is poor we'll hesitate to do anything similar in future weeks of competition. Remember this is only week 3, still trying to feel out some of the kinks and quirks in this series. GT4 will no doubt present more, so best to gain as much knowledge as possible here to make the eventual transition as smooth as possible for everyone.

No T2 discussion, and we'll see how it goes. The intent is not to inconvenience the lot of you, just understand that the split is in a somewhat precarious position.

and to clear things up, my challenge will have the same rules as the reg classes. assists off, no cutting corners, etc.
and when i say race this or race that, im meaning the one that costs the most.

Ran a couple hundred miles on Suzuki's Challenge ... I didn't plan to, but it's addictive

I've never liked Tokyo, and I still don't, but I kept seeing dirty laps with splits just a bit ahead of my clean ones, so I kept going ... I think it's safe to say that my WRX knows who's the boss :lol:

T1 = 40.3

Re: discussing T2 times, I really strongly agree with Small_Fryz that we should discuss them. It's true that there's only one corner after T2, but T2 is can be pretty deceptive ... you can easily gain or drop 0.500 after T2. For example, if I'm fast between T1 and T2, but mess up in the left-right right before T2 and come the trap with something ok, but I've lost all my momentum, my final time will suffer. Or, I might be slower between T1 and T2, but really nail the left-right, come through with the same T2, but my final time would be way ahead. Plus, there's lots of ways to blow the last corner

And it's not much fun when there's nothing to talk about ... the track is so long, that T1 doesn't really tell you much. It's much more interesting if you know about where people are, and feel push to get those extra tenths 👍

Thanks ... it took forever and a day to get cleanly through the double left before T1. The first one can be taken flat, and the second one with a well timed lift. So for me, it's flat out from the exit of turn 1 to the double right at the end of the back straight, except for that one lift.

What're you at so far, Suzuki?

Both of those splits ^^ were my best by far. Saw lots of 40.7-40.9's and 1'28s.

Here's my settings for the WRX:

Springs: 9.0 / 15.0
Ride Height: 110 / 110
Bound: 8 / 10
Rebound: 8 / 10
Camber: 3.0 / 1.5
Toe: 1.0 -1.0
Stabilizers: 3 / 5
LSD: 10/10, 10/10, 10/10
ASM: 0
TCS: 0
VCD: 45%

A couple of tips: steer as smoothly as possible, it's really easy to break the from wheels lose and understeer into the wall. Use the rumble strips everywhere (I touched every one on my lap

), and don't be shy about it, take a good chunk

at first glance I dont see how you aren't understeering everywhere with the LSD settings that low. I started around that leven and have been cranking mine upwards to relieve it - with moerate success. Aside from the LSD, the only other distinguishing difference between our settings is the damper bound.

edit: i retract that first glance
the thing is oversteering. I only changed 2 suspension settings so I guess I wasnt tooooo far off. Bound had to be stiffened up for me, everything else I've left the same.

quicker, but still a few tenths off pace with everyone else, and seconds off pace with luxy

you've got yourself a race in STC
I through some rather crude looking settings on and ran:
T1 38.339 (believe it or not)
T2 1'23.442

I know there is still much more time to come off of that once i refine these settings a bit more. T1 felt alright, only lost a little time on the double rights just before the split. I know for a fact that my T2 can be done better - I drifted almost the entire sector.

edit: I've been seeing 38.0xx and even as low as a 37.7xx in T1, and a few passes in the 1'22.9xx range in T2 - but I havent put a clean one together yet. I've been rubbing the wall during that little right hand kink following the first hairpin rather more frequently than I would like, or understeering into the wall on one of the last 2 turns :grumpy:
