Is it worth it? I haven't heard anything about it until i happened to come across it while surfing the dealers. with it's exotic design and 512hp you would think it would be a must have; i almost got it. But is it really worth the 500,000 credits?

You can win the car, have a look in the prize car lists. Its an interesting car to drive but you can only do Test Runs on the Nurburgring or Test Course in it.

You can win it in the Grand Valley Endurance.....

And no, its not worth it, IMO. As said above it can only be raced on Nurburgring and Test Course, and not in an actual race. I have it and haven't even bothered to try it becuase of those reasons.

The car was originally developed from the Auto Union Grand Prix cars to set speed records. As a result it was only ever designed to run in a straight line and in addition to all the above info, it does not exactly set the world alight in the handling department.

I think I drove mine for about five minutes and thats about it.

It's a shame that we didn't get the normal V16 instead, it would have been the ultimate driving experience on Nürburgring. Tons of power, skinny tyres...

Hoho, but this one is a tremendous experience at the ring too! Fit it with R1 tyres, minimize the downforce, and loose the drivingaids, and you´ll meet a beast of a car! It hardly steers at all, and requires alot of steering input. It understeers into turns, and oversteers out! Just 1 single lap around the ring is really daunting, and takes its toll on your concentration capabilities. Great fun!!

the auto union doesnt steer properly when going slow and just spins out of control when going fast

1937, 512hp, 5 speed gearbox, amazing, the handlings amazzing aswell the opposite way:dunce:

I gotta say, I admit Scaff spending 5 minutes on it. I think I managed 30 seconds.. Worst car ever... (As always - each to his own and all that ;) )

Allright, just to get things going a bit for you guys, and to to get you to appreciate this very demanding but oh, so fun drive; I have done 8:28 at the Ring under the conditions I mensioned earlier - R1 tyres, min. DF, no ASM/TCS. Now, go and beat it! Shouldn´t be too hard!

8min28!! Now my little Pug 106 Rallye gets around only 20secs slower with N2's! So with 350 extra ponies (and some weight) I guess 8min28 won't be too difficult - having said that a) I havent driven the car yet b) I cant cos my PS2 is miles away :grumpy:

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! The car has the turning circle of an oil rig (which can't turn, lol), and can only be used on the 'Ring or Test Course. Unless you want it for Photomode, by all means, avoid this "car"

It's on the List of cars that cannot be raced in Simulation Mode, so I'd suggest "no".

It's in there for historic reasons only. It can only be raced at the 'Ring and only in Arcade Mode Time Trial.

Maybe I have a special edition version of GT4 as I used a stock Auto Union Streamline to easily defeat a Spoon S2000, Mazda BP Falken RX-7, AMUSE S2000, HPA Motorsports R32, and a TRIAL Celica SS-II in the five race Tuning Car Grand Prix championship series. In fact you can enter this car in any race as long as it meets the race requirements.

In addition, unlike all the cars that cannot be raced against other cars in simulation mode, you can use the Auto Union in any of the Family Car Cup races on ALL tracks as well.

Furthermore, you can also tune it up in the Audi shop and with sport tires can enter even more races, so I'm not sure why folks seem to think this car can't be raced.

DUDE!!! That's messed up! Try to find some other unusual things in your experience! No one can use the Auto Union in ANY of those! We know it can be tuned, but its a fact that it can't be raced. I want your GT4. :grumpy:

8.28.756 for me (with a couple of offs). It seemed to handle better with no downforce. I think the Ring will seem much easier in normal cars after this.

edit: I just discovered that a replica of this car in RL achieved 279mph but the driver lost control in a fatal accident. I'm just off to strap a bigger Turbo onto mine...

Umm not a replica of this car, rather the actual car itself.

It was designed for world speed record attempts and the accident claimed the life of Bernd Rosemeyer.

You can read more about this and his life here

All the versions of the car that you see today are the replicas

its not "too" bad in highspeed corners, but dont even bother with low speed tght corners

LOL

Yeah, with the bodywork covering the front and rear wheel wells no wonder it can't turn. I'm actually surprised that it turns at all!

You might as well get it, if you're trying to get every car in the game.
Get it in 15 minutes after doing the DTM and selling the car.
I've been collecting all the cars and am probably about 2 thirds through getting them all

I never bothered to use the AUS (Auto Union Steamline) until I read this thread, and besides being able to use it in races, I also don't understand all the harsh criticism for its handling. It certainly isn't going to win any handling or for that matter braking awards, and it is very dificult to turn at sub 30mph speeds, but I found once it gets out of 1st gear it responds quite well. In stock form and no adjustments, the car does have a bit of oversteer, but I used this to cause the car to drift in tight turns and then play with the throttle to keep the car in the best racing line for each turn.

For fun, and as a test of its handling capabilities I entered it in the World Classic Car Series, which is run on several of the more challenging courses in the game:

Fuji Speedway 80's
El Capitan (reverse)
Nurburgring
Cote d'Azur
Laguna Seca

El Captitan is particularly challenging due to all the varying degree turns and undulations throughout the course. I discovered quickly that an untuned AUS does not have much downforce and it is fairly easy to lose control at high speeds over a rise on the track.

Nurburgring was a blast, but of course also challenging as it too has a few undulations, and some fairly aggressive turns. On several of the straights I got the AUS near 200, and on the main straight just hit the 210 mark before having to go hard on the breaks for the approaching right-hander.

Cote d'Azur was actually the trickiest track as the narrow apex hairpins require a great deal of concentration and control because it is easy to enter the turn too slowly - which is where you don't want to be when driving the AUS as the steering gets extremely heavy at low speeds and twice I found myself in slow motion hitting the wall and having to reverse just to get the wheels pointed the right direction.

Once I got used to the oversteer and the poor low speed handling, driving the AUS was quite a joy and I found the drifting capabilities of this car to be quite a pleasant surprise.

As for the World Classic Car Series, I easily won each race, but it was really no contest considering the opponents:

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe (C2)
1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupe
1967 Toyota 2000GT
1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale
1965 Nissan SILVIA (CSP311)

Bottom line: For me the AUS has turned into a very pleasant surprise of a car. The style of it is something right off the pages of Flash Gordon. While the driving characteristics of the car may take a little getting used to, those that do are rewarded for it as this car can really MOVE! I may just have to log a few more miles on this one before moving on.

Any chance of a Photomode shot of the Auto Union IN a race?

Happy to, but I'll need some instructions... don't laugh, but I have yet to do any "photo" stuff in GT4.

In the meantime, I'll take some screenshots of entering the race, as well as from the replay video.

Wow, I didn´t know there were versions of the game where you could race the AUS! Are you NTSC or PAL? I run PAL, and can not race the AUS :(
