taking pictures of backfire

You know the feeling...you've managed to pause perfectly on a backfire yet you can't see it when you take a picture. Well below are what happens in such situations, the flames are behind the car yet on pictures are either not there or closer and even underneath the car. Well the ones below just happen to be such pictures however they do add a nice slant.....

it would be a lot easier to catch the flames if PD would implement a forward and rewind option in replays.. i tried for sooo long to get mine. i was trying to notice and which millisecond i need to stop at :P

Here are a few of mine, for some reason whenever I turn the shutter speed above 1/60 the flame disappears, but at 1/60 the flame is blurry.

Hard to see in that last picture because of the water spray, but it is there.
