As many of you might know, we have wanted a 67 Fastback Mustang for many years. We bought a 67 Coupe in 2004 just so we could have a Mustang and so I could teach her about building cars. After a couple years and a lot of bodywork the coupe got into Popular Hot Rodding magazine in the work in progress section. Heathers 67 Coupe in Popular Hot Rodding magazine.

At that point we decided it was time to get rid of the coupe and get a fastback. As most people know, the Fastbacks are very hard to find for a reasonable price. So after some research we decided to "convert" this coupe into a Fastback. This required purchasing the back half of a fastback from the junkyard and then swapping the fastback body onto her coupe body. Surprisingly this conversion only took a few hours for the external body swap and was VERY cheap. Later involved welding and some more fabrication and a new windshield. After it was converted to a Fastback, we did attend 1 car show and recieved a LOT of positive attention and feedback even though the bodywork was still quite rough.

Next we decided to pull the straight 6 engine and purchased a 74 302 V8. Also purchased a disk brake conversion for the front using 11" rotors and a 5 lug conversion. Also purchased (2) 17" wheels for the front. Then purchased some racing seats and quite a few other goodies. So at this point the car was and still is not drivable.

Not long after this I ended up slipping a disk in my back, then the following year ended up with Vertigo. Then once I healed we had our wedding. Fast forward about 2 years and now we are getting the motivation again to get this car going. So last Friday I purchased a C4 and torque convertor for the 302 engine. Hopefully we can get this engine mocked up and get the car started. Then lower the car, swap in the 11" rotors and brakes, and the 17" wheels onto the front. After that we need to convert the rear to 5lug and get the 17" wheels for the rear.

Paint Color: House Of Kolor Sunset Pearl Orange. White stripes will have pearl in them.
Interior: White and orange
Tranny: Twist Machine Shrifter on the steering wheel with necessary electronic tranny.
Engine: Currently 200 I6 cylinder but eventually a 302 V8.
Suspension: Lowered at least 4-5 inches with many other goodies.

I plan to change the suspension later. First have to convert to disk brakes in the front, lower the front, and eventually buy a different rear end that has 5 lugs. It will be baby steps right now just to get the engine mocked up and get the car rolling again. Once the car is drivable, then I will start reinforcing everything and upgrading all the weak links.

Thanks. So far there is not a single other 67 Fastback Mustang with this exhaust system. I had the idea a few years ago and bought the exhaust a few years ago but didnt tell anyone. Thats why I have not posted it anywhere until now. I know once I mention this S281 exhaust setup, someone else will do it.

Oh yeah I really had no intention of using the radiator at all. In fact the 302 hosing is all on the opposite side. I can get a universal radiator similar to what the Camaro has for only about $160. And that has no problem cooling my Camaro. Then I can hook a Lincoln Mark VIII fan to the radiator just like I did for my Camaro.

As for the springs they sit VERY high on the Mustangs so that wont be a problem for just cruising around town. I just mainly want to get the car started to make sure this engine and tranny works.

Oh and good luck getting your hands on the S281 exhaust. Took me a LONG time to find that for a reasonable price.

I am hoping to at least get it mocked up and started sometime this year. I need to make sure this engine and tranny work at all. We only have a couple months before it starts getting cold again so I need to do it asap. I might even start messing with some of it tomorrow or Sunday.

More great news.... I decided to start looking for a rear end that has 5 lug instead of 4 lug. So for the heck of it at lunch time, I e-mailed the guy that I bought the C4 tranny from and asked if he knew anyone that had a 5 lug rear end. Come to find out that HE actually has one from his 68 Mustang. lol It has new drums and shoes and I will be picking it up tomorrow after work for only $175.00! Very excited! WOW sometimes things happen faster then I expect.

I'm liking everything except for the horrible, uncomfortable, cheap, flimsy piles of crap that Bomz Racing seats are.

Your car looks awesome as well. Are you ever going to get it painted though? It's been grey for as long as I can rememeber.

Yeah those Bomz racing seats were a cheap alternative for racing seats and I do not recommend them at all. In fact the entire experience with the company I bought the seats from was terrible. The company was called Hyperformance and do NOT EVER buy from them. By far the worst customer service ever and terrible product. So yes eventually those seats will be upgraded for sure but not for a while.

At this point it looks like I probably wont ever paint the Camaro. Not until everything is finished on both cars. There is just so much more bodywork and it seems like every time I paint a car, something happens to it. Plus with it being epoxy primer like this, I wont have to worry about the paint getting chipped or scratched. :lol:

I will be picking up the 5 lug rear end after work today. I only work until noon.

Now I need to decide on the tire size for the 17" wheels. The stance on the 67 Mustang will be very similar to the stance my 69 Camaro has. So after viewing some research I might go with:

235 40 17 IN FRONT.
275 40 17 IN REAR.

I started checking Craigslist yesterday for some used tires for the mockup. I really just want to at least get this car started again and rolling to make sure the engine and tranny work.

Some interresting results after dropping the engine down last night off the engine stand.

74 Flywheel 14"
74 Torque converter holes 11.5"

68 Flywheel 13"
68 Torque converter holes 10.5"

Soooo the 74 flywheel on the engine will have to be removed. I am going to try the 68 Flywheel and torque converter on Thursday to see if that will bolt up. It that works I will have to try a 68 Starter and hope that will work.

Some more information I found out is that the 67 Tranny I unbolted from the straight 6 would have worked IF I bought a different bell housing. Cant believe how much these 2 trans look alike considering one trans was on a straight 6 and the other was on a 289. Sure seems like they are both C4 trans to me.

This number is on the front of both of them.

Spent about 4 hours in the garage trying to piece this together with all the different bell housing, flywheel, and tranny combinations. After several mock ups, I finally got the flywheel, bell housing and starter to work. But it required quite a bit of modification to the spacer bracket that is between the block and the flywheel. I ended up drilling some new holes in the spacer bracket and re-located the starter hole by about half an inch. Thats what the cardboard starter template was for. After doing all of that it worked!!! The starter bolted up in the proper location next to the flywheel and the bell housing bolted on and cleared everything. In fact I used a jumper box to actually turn the engine over last night!!!

So now that the everything bolts up and engine turns over, I just need to get the broken bolt out of the back of the block and get a few more tranny bolts. Then I can put the engine and tranny into the car. I also bolted up the Polyeurethane tranny mount right before I went in for the night. Very productive and exciting night.

68 Flywheel bolted onto 74 engine but the 68 starter is about an inch from the flywheel because of the 74 spacer plate.

Time to modify the spacer plate so the starter fits closer to the 68 flywheel.

Starter bolted up after spacer plate is modified. Had to relocate the starter hold and had to drill out several other holes so the bell housing would bolt up to the back of the engine and still have the starter bolt up. Perfect fit!!!!

Used this jumper to turn the engine over.

Spacer plate and toque converter installed. I will reinstall the starter again after the engine and trans are in the car.

Installed poly tranny mount. Will tighten after the install.

Had to remove the spacer plate last night from behind the flywheel because the torque convertor bolts were hitting it. But now everything is together. The next step is to remove the broken studs from the bottom of the manifolds and get a couple more tranny bolts. I also need to bolt on the crossmember. After that it should be ready to put into the Mustang this Saturday the 27th.

Engine and transmission are ready to be installed and I am still on track to have all of this installed tomorrow the 27th.

1. All the tranny bolts to engine are in
2. Crossmember is on the trans with new poly tranny mount
3. Exhaust manifold lower bolts are removed. We used a torche and unscrewed the broken bolts.
4. Intake plate for lifting the engine and tranny is installed.
5. Oil dipstick tube is bolted on. Hopefully that wont be in the way. Might have to remove it.
6. I might install the starter before I put the eng/trans into the car.

Dropped the engine and tranny into the car on Saturday but it looks like the center link, crossmember, and the power steering power cylinder are all in the way. The 74 oil pan has the drop down in the back of the engine. The stock 67 has it in the front of the engine to clear the steering components and crossmember.

So at this point I have to get a different oil pan, oil pump pickup, and dipstick tube.

Also as you can see from the tire pic, the car still needs to come down at least 5 inches in the front. This tire pic is WITH the engine and trans setting in the car.

68 chrome oil pan, chrome oil pan bolts, oil pan gaskets, 68 oil pump pickup, and 68 motor mounts. The lower part of the oil pan actualy faces the front of the engine for the 67-68 Mustangs. If the engine starts Saturday I will pull it back out. Then I will clean up the engine, paint it, and hopefully I can get all of this back into the car before the end of the holiday weekend.

Here is an idea of what the paint looks like. I painted her welding helmet back in 2006 with the paint color. House Of Kolor sunset pearl orange. She still uses it when she is welding too.

Also my first attempt at flames. lol I will re-do it some day and paint the entire helmet. Looks even better in the sun.

ITS ALIVE AND RUNNING!!!

Made some MASSIVE progress over the holiday. After replacing the distribitor with a points style distributor it fired right up! Not only did it fire right up, it didnt knock, didnt smoke or anything. It started and idled perfectly! Simply amazing for a junkyard engine that hasnt run for at least 2-3 years. By far the most exciting moment for this car in a long time.

So after that great news, we pulled the engine and tranny back out of the car. Then Heather cleaned up the engine compartment and painted it flat black. While Heather was cleaning and painting the engine compartment, I degreased the engine and power washed it. After that I painted everything on the engine silver just to clean it up.

After that we put the new oil pickup on the engine, the new oil pan, new oil dipstick tube, and new motor mounts. Then we dropped it all back into the car and bolted up the tranny crossmember. Direct bolt in and the driveshaft will be a direct bolt in too.

All we have left to do now is make some brackets that go from the Mustang to the new V8 motor mounts on the engine. Right now I have it sitting on a couple blocks of wood for the motor mount bracket mockup. I cant believe how far this car come over the weekend. Major progress!!

Just purchased these last night for the 67 Fastback Mustang. The Momo Trek Alcantara wheel is usually $250.00 and we got it off Craigslist brand new for only $125.00. Had to drive for an hour to get it but well worth the drive. Really starting to love Craigslist. And our chrome shock tower brackets came in last night too. Our new chrome monte carlo bar and Momo steering wheel adapter brackets should hopefully be coming within the next few days.

Some bad news and good news. Bad news is that they dont make adapters to fit a Momo Steering wheel onto a 67 Mustang. Good news is that I will make my own bracket using the Grant hub and the adapter that I received with the momo wheel. The other good news is that I made quite a bit more progress this weekend.

1. Motor mount brackets are bolted up to engine and frame
2. Chrome monte carlo bar installed with stainless steel bolts
3. Carburetor installed
4. Radiator installed
5. Chrome Monte carlo bar is installed with stainless steel bolts
6. Chrome strut tower brackets installed with stainless steel bolts
7. Strut tower support brace bolts replaced with stainless steel bolts
8. Distributor cap and rotor installed. Will replace with new cap and rotor soon.
9. Fan and pulleys installed
10. Starter wire bolted up
11. Cut brackets for momo wheel to steering column.

Tonight I will finish making the adapter to fit the MOMO steering wheel and get the Momo wheel onto the car. Next weekend I will be installing the Saleen exhaust!

Last night I spent about an hour and welded together a bracket out of 1/8" steel that adapts from the MOMO steering wheel to the Grant 67 Mustang hub. The MOMO steering wheel is on!!! :dopey:

More good news. I will be bringing the car to my friends shop this weekend and we will be running the Saleen S281 exhaust!!

Bought a chrome Edelbrock air cleaner and oil breather cleaner for our 67 Fastback Mustang. Then started mocking up the Saleen S281 exhaust tips to get a rough idea of where I will be cutting the rear of the car. My friend is bringing over a trailer and we will be bringing the Mustang to his shop tomorrow. The plan is to run the entire Saleen S281 exhaust system this weekend using Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. I will still have to split the rear bumper and french in the license plate. Similar to the Murcielago exhaust setup on my 69 Camaro.

Also, I dunno if I like the steering wheel... I mean, it's nice, I dunno if I like it on a Mustang.

I look forward to the exhaust install, though.
