Can anyone explain why it's faster to shift below the redline, this is the 1st car I've drove in GT5 like this. It's not like the car is spinning the wheels in the lower gears so you would short shift to get more traction. Is it something to do with the low turbo kicking in below 8000RPM?

Exactly what w-g-e said. have a look at the powerband in the setup screen.
Watch closely how the power drops away at 6600RPM.

EDIT:

BTW, I was using Praiano's tune with some personal tweaks.

Basically if you shift up at the high RPM (Red line) it takes longer to get to that speed compared to if you shirfted up just before the power drops (around 8000RPM) meaning you will get to a higher speed and will also have a faster alliteration 👍

Performance points: 594
Power: 523 BHP
Weight: 1145 KG
Power limiter: 100%
Ballast: 0 KG
Aerodynamics: 20/50

Gearing:
First put the final gear to 4.900, then put max speed all the way to the left and adjust as following (tranny trick):
1st gear: 3.797
2nd gear: 2.880
3rd gear: 2.320
4th gear: 2.945
5th gear: 1.670
6th gear: 1.456
Final gear: 2.500
Max speed: 180 km/h

Drivetrain: (Still experimenting)
LSD Front: 5/12/5
LSD Rear: 5/12/5
Torque distibuting centre differential: 30/70

Suspension:
Ride height: 25/0
Spring rate: 15.0/12.0
Dampers (extension): 7/5
Dampers (compression): 7/5
Anti-roll bars: 7/5
Camber angle: 2.5/1.5
Toe angle: 0.00/-0.15

Brake balance: 4/7
ABS: 10

Notes:
Shift at 7900 RPM. The reason I set the top speed so high is because the car only loses power and torque after 6600 RPM (credits to jtv90069 who mentioned both of these facts to me).

I have a question: Are 3rd gear & 4th gear in the wrong spots? I noticed that 4th has a higher number than 3rd.
Thanks for helping.

Sorry, it was a typo. Fixed now.:)

Has anyone with the Speed test pack tested the difference between Redline shift accel vs power band drop off shift? The reason i didn't bother gearing for the Powerband is that my car seems to turn in much better at revs near the Redline, I have no clue why GT behaves this way.

I managed to get a higher top speed. Before when changing at red line I wouldnt hit 6th red line, but with shifts up at 8000rpm ish I was able to hit the red line (cant remember the speed difference sorry) but I was going quicker

Its driver opinions really. I short shift a lot, some dont but can still control the car etc etc - do what you like but I found Im quicker with quicker changes 👍

Yes.

I quickly made this just to give you guys an idea. It's fictive and proportions can be/are not correct.

The average power you will get when you shift at 'shift point' will be higher than when you shift at 'redline'.
Shifting at 'redline', your engine will retake in the next gear on top of your engine's powerband and will immediatly lose power, where shifting at 'shift point', your engine will first gain power and then lose a little untill you reach 'shiftpoint' again.

This is not only GT mate. It's real life fact. :)
You can use high revs to get a good turn in but when you are accelarating it will be best to use the cars powerband in the best possible way.

But is the redline not normally at the best shift point, I was wondering why the redline is so far away from the best shift point. Most other cars it's much closer to the redline.....EDIT ie why is the redline not 8000RPM

What speedy has done with the graph is for the R32. Each car is different, so you have to take into account that the best time to change gear might be at the red line. It might be low revs - its different for each car

diesels are very different. There best performance is normally at 3000RPM and anything above struggles to find power or torque.

Its just an example of what happens to power in a car

Speed Test using gearing from Fuji race.

Shift point: Redline
0-60mph: 2.737
0-100mph: 6.129
1/4 mile: 10.776
0-1000m: 19.733
1 mile: 27.811 @ 174 mph

Shift Point: 7800rpm
0-60mph: 2.760
0-100mph: 5.885
1/4 mile: 10.616
0-1000m: 19.353
1 mile: 27.240 @ 177mph

Almost .6 of a second on a mile?!

No wonder I gained almost a second per lap.

Before my quali I was shifting at redline and my best lap was 37.5-37.7
Then I saw Twissy thanking w-g-e about the shiftpoint. Quickly I took a look in the setupscreen at the powerband and engine specs.
Changed my shiftpoint to 7500 for the qualirun and my best lap in the quali was 36.504

Just some pictures I took when watching the replay, I seem to love the "cool" filter, although it does make the pictures a little dark when viewed on a computer. Look much better on the PS3 :)

Ssssshhhhhh...

We have a little issue with the database atm. Tim will fix it asap ;)

should be all fixor'd

Sorry about that guys, there was some sort of disconnect between the code base on my development server (which was working perfectly) and what got FTP'd to the web server.

I nuked everything on the www and re-posted from my dev box and everything seems to be in order again. Once again, my apologies for the growing pains, you guys are the 'beta' series to this administrative framework I've been building for the last year. ;)

Great photos I'm even in a few woohoo lol.

Just like to say I think the standing are all fixed now if you would like to look over on the PURE site

Despite the drama before the race and the big delay, this was a great way to start the season, battles everywhere, no incidents (reported), and clean driving throughout. Truly great racing guys 👍 Well done to Twissy for another dominating performance, he's going to take some beating this season, although w-g-e may be the guy to do it once he gets his wheel, and if I can get the best out of the car I may be able to hang onto their draft :dopey: It was a very exciting race from my perspective, don't think I had any time to rest with the fight for the final two podium spots spanning the whole 38 laps! Look forward to more of that next week, at Laguna Seca. Qualifying is now open for the next round

Finally, I must say sorry for the delayed start. It was a knock-on effect from the late qualifiers, which was my decision, and one I will learn not to make again, as there will be no deadline extensions in the future. I should've let only Speedy qualify, as he was the only one who posted his intention in the thread. Anyway, from now on also, the maximum we will wait for someone if they disconnect is 10 minutes. No ifs, no buts, no exceptions. Unless half the room disconnects, we will not be waiting longer than that. All agreed? The "no ifs.." applies to installing illegal parts too. It is very clear in the OP that the car must be kept stock, and penalties will be given out if this rule is not followed. Having to DQ someone just before race-time is really annoying.

Anyway, hopefully next week will go much smoother, and the racing should be just as good. See you all at Monterey 👍

Will try and fit mine in today at some point, probably after the F1 Quali.. so if any stewards about.. will be much appreciated 👍

I'll see if there's still time (and someone online) to qualify this evening after I finished this.
If not, it'll be tomorrow then.

Biffy would it be possible to get the "Clean Run" pictures up quicker so we can know before the qualification at what spots we have to be especially careful? I know general rule of thumb is 2 wheels on track, but each track has corners where this can be interpreted quite loosely.

On that note, i plan on getting my Qualification done tonight around 17-20bst.
