I suspect everyone would see it but not sure. Yes these 2-3 second time-outs are something I am aware of, and unfortunately at this point nothing I can do about it, but I guess I didn't realise it happened more than once. (hopefully doesnt happen when someone is behind me just like what happened with you today at NA).

So, aside from PASM, who had a good race?

Actually, for me personally, I was quite pleased with my race. Of course Tim got the rear end of the stick from my lag-out, and Caine got the wrong end of the stick of my slight indecision at a braking point (although I checked the replay to see if I should be penalised, and if I'm honest, (at least from my replay) there wasn't anything 'technically' wrong with it), I actually had a great race. Only clipped a wall once losing me about 1 second, other than that, ran a great pace for what I was capable of, and was not expecting a podium at all!

EU Race results:

Congratulations to Bart on the win and to Silver and Paul on the other podium places.

@Oink, I was wondering how you stream your effort. What kind of a connection do you have that can allow you to push as hard as pull? That video is 1.5hrs and has to be as big as a house. It's like you were posting it at the same time you were streaming so that means that you had split the signal another time. That's 3x what it takes to have a solid signal and the upstream has to be freekin huge. At least from my, stranded in the country w/ my 5meg limp, point of view.

I watched the replay, fast forwarding quite a bit. Paul you did have a great race, pushed that car to its limits. I see why I am running in the low 1:46's in online practice. I need to be better at counter steering ( I think that is what you were doing), as I saw Paul on the gas much quicker than me. When I try that I am sideways. In my on line practice I thought I would need 8 liters for a 32 lapper, so now that is probably 6 or so for 31 laps, where Paul needed just about all 14 he took on his pit. Good job to all, I will be content to run clean and have some fun tonight after seeing the quali times for the EU race. Going to practice a bit, and hope to incorporate some of what I saw on the replay.

I also checked the replay and it doesn't look as bad as I though it was during the race. It seemed to happen a lot faster during the race

All I remember was you going to the inside, then just as I was about to brake you darted to the outside. But after watching it it's clear you weren't in the wrong :) .. but think it was earlier the same lap at the roundabout, you turned in on me which upset the car a little and you managed to go round the outside of me! But I'm not fussed about that incident as you had just done a mega save after coming out the chicane, I would have put money on you spinning there! good job mate.

You also prove a point, consistency > speed. Quite often I end up racing with you, but on paper I'm usually the faster.

Nice job PASM, Silver, and Oink!

Wondering if anyone has an extra car they can send me? I usually break it in myself but I don't have time. Short 4 HP (which is a lot here).

I have around 35mb down, sadly only around 2mb up. Sadly, the ISPs in the UK sell their packages based on an amazing download, when guys like me would far prefer and even spread (18down, 18up for example). Still it's solid, I just have a big problem with my router, which is why I suffer these very occasional 2-3 second timeouts, which of course during normal web browsing are not noticeable, but during online play can be severely annoying.

...as I saw Paul on the gas much quicker than me. When I try that I am sideways.

Not just about getting on it sooner, but also about good throttle control and balance. If you want a really good example of it, ask one of the D1 guys in your region (or watch replays from the TT), and you will see some incredible footwork.

I for whatever reason always seem to need more than what I hear other guys saying. Must be something about my driving style but I tend to need a tiny bit extra to what other people manage to get by with.

Yes, I was so close to losing it there, thought you would edge me out to turn 2. And yes, very sorry about that, didn't quite leave you as much space as I thought I did, was a bit of a bad squeeze so sorry about that one :scared:

Quick shot from turn 1 of EU. A fantastic selection of colours. Looked like a bunch of toy cars!

Time to isolate my connection to pure PS3 so hopefully my issues from the last race don't show up again. I may need some more help if my connection lets me down again. I remember the "NAT" deal and all that so maybe it was just a fluke. If I don't see everyone this time I'll just drop out and get together w/ the guru'z to try to find a work around. (fingerz crossed) :nervous:

Good Luk Everyone (Big Class 👍)

And now live for the NA race stream for those of you at home ;)

You can now view this for the replay of the NA race. I had a great view of some awesome battles throughout the race, definitely recommend watching!

Congratulations Bart on another win, but more importantly (in my eyes) proving that the no-stopper was possible/competitive; without any draft.

Interesting that your first race-pace lap was your fastest lap (1'44.591). ;) (ie, the lap after the standing-start 1st lap)
And they just got "sloweeeerr" from then on.

Great job by Paul to nab 2nd, that was a hell of a drive, man. 👍

And with Rph having an early crash in the chicane -- way to battle back into 3rd place.

The field felt huge tonight, and was a lot of fun. Despite showing up with 2min to spare and then having a bad quali, and making some boneheaded race mistakes, I had a great time.

Got some pics coming a little later, or tomorrow. :)

I saw the picture and the first thing I thought was "toy cars" and then saw you said the same thing. Seriously, maybe we were really driving remote control toy cars... that's what it felt like at times.

Can we now conclude that Paul is Mr. Consistency? Look at his race time, best lap time and quali lap time! Well done 👍👍👍

That second lap indeed was the lap I pushed full throttle to get the gap, after that I concentrated on going just as fast in the corners, while coasting into the major braking zones to save fuel.

Al gave Paul a good run for his money in the consistency department.

Yes Al got very very close too 👍👍👍

Uploading pics now. There's ~25 of them, and I didn't even get everybody. :ouch:

I did, however, focus on our mistakes! :mischievous: I know, kind of mean, but it happens.

Jon with a 1st stint moment

RPH doing a similar move, avoiding Oink. Prior to braking he was behind Oink.

Battle for 3rd in first stint

I ruin stuff:ouch:

And RPH continues his drive to the podium

Oink about to break free

Tim exiting pits

Oink takes 2nd

Gooners not happy

Me glad I didn't do a no-stopper (Pekka did)

Was happy to battle Jon for a few laps, then just had to go for it

Tim chasing RPH

Tim chasing Armco

Hi there!

Tim inspecting more Armco. Dude. It's up to spec.

Bart laps Daniel...Or does he?

Problem!

Bart wins!

This was a scary one, I was litterally about to turn into the corner, and I just glimpsed Rph thundering through on my right, so just held off the turn in for about a split second, and I see him blast through on the inside, then I just tuck into the corner. Was more than a bit releived to have come out of that one, and well dont Rph for avoiding all contact there.

I had really great fun both races, and as you guys had said, some slightly scary consistency, but most fun in the NA race, where until part way through the second stint, it was battling all the way. I'm going into the replay a bit later and will post some highlights that I saw.

Lucas... you missed my check of the armco in the final corner of the final lap. The barrier was up to specs there too by the way. However, I'm reporting them to the 3D3 regulatory commission for failure to install "safer barriers". You guys should thank me and just so you know the 3d3 driver union dues are going up by $1/month per driver to cover the cost of a new paint job on my car for the inspection.

Gooners was using my gold chrome paint chip so he doesn't get to charge for his inspection.

If we had set this up as three or four 8 lap sprints I would like my chances... but for some reason the approach I was using fell apart completely at some point in the tires life. I would have done better to stop twice to be honest.

I had turned my mike off at the beginning of the race, but you would have heard me laugh at that precise moment... it all happened in slow motion. Bart was in front of me, and he got there first. There was plenty of room to go around him, but I had been in his draft and braked too late and ended up there, tapping him only very gently...

A few laps before, I saw Bart getting closer and closer, but then not so much anymore, that's when I realised he was probably on a no stopper, with not much tires left. But I made a lot of mistakes during the race, one of which allowed Bart to lap me towards the end... and then I missed my chance to unlap myself.

My stupidest mistake was right after I passed Patrick, I accelerated too much coming out of the roundabout and spun... and then I was too far behind to hope for anything but my usual place. My TT's have been improving as of late, but my racing skills are not following the trend, unfortunately.

Hey! I just noticed Pekka and I had identical best laps. And exactly one second slower than yours, Lucas :odd:

Pretty much the same for me. Before I joined the WRS I considered myself as a decent racer.. well I soon learnt that wasn't true

I never really bothered with the seasonal TT's before, but since joining the WRS and doing the weekly TT's I've learnt a lot and improved quite a bit. However, I do struggle in races. Never seem to have a clean race, or consistent for that matter. The consistency is coming.. I think, or it might just be the combo's recently.

I think my main issue is not keeping a clear head. I crack too easy under pressure, and need to remember it's not a sprint race! This last race proved that. Because of my mistakes in quali and mistakes at the start, I was still in last place and a good 30 seconds behind the leader by lap 10, when on paper I should have been right up there. But I still managed to fight my way back up to 4th, which could have been 3rd.

One plus, overall fastest lap for both races! :D

We all crack at times and have bad days so don't feel bad. Even Bart... ask him about the F1 race. It's just the frequency and what you do after that counts.

I think you also can't approach the race with a TT mindset... instead of 100% you have to tone it down. I think that's another area where there exist differences are between the best and the rest... guys like Bart, Tidgney, Twissy, etc. still have to turn it down a bit, but maybe only to 95% and have a consistent race. A guy like me, maybe has to notch it down to 85% or maybe 90% if I really get in a lot of practice. Otherwise you'll lose more in mistakes and blown tires than you gain with the extra pushing.

Then there is race craft.... knowing when to take calculated risks and when to lay back and wait for the right opportunity. That patience has two benefits... (i) you become a cleaner racer because you weight the risk vs benefit (assuming you value your opponents as well when evaluating the risk) and (ii) you avoid needless mistakes and live to fight into the next corner.

None of that is directed at you Caine, but just general advice... and advice I also need to revisit and remind myself at times.

Think of it this way. Only 1 guy can win the race, but all of us can have a good time and enjoy ourselves. The latter is a much better goal IMO and is what we're all about. Personally, I get as much satisfaction as an organizer here from Lefty saying he had a great time and looking forward to next week than I do from seeing the near perfect fastest lap of an alien... in fact, more.

I am in the better at TT than races crowd too. I can do a fairly good job of beating some D2s and most D3s in the TT, then finishing back of the pack in a race. There is always a fatal mistake somewhere, mine yesterday was on first chicane. I am not sure what happened, but that part of the track looked like a blur to me, and I had a hard time deciding what I was aiming for. Indecision led to a crash and lost the draft on lap one. In fact that chicane looked weird for a few laps to me. Once I get alone with no traffic, I ran times that are consistent and should place me somewhere higher than the back. Oh well, experience some day will pay off, until then the races are fun for me and I get to race with some of the fastest drivers in GT5. I need to relax more too, beginning of race so tense, then it goes away when I am driving all alone :yuck:.

The track blur was a serious issue. I didn't notice as much in the EU race, but it was terrible in the NA race. "Pixelation" and slow screen refresh rates at times, especially as you said, in the first chicane. We need a PS4 version, but we've got a long wait.

I think I'm going to permanently downgrade to 720p because the PS3 doesn't seem capable of consistently refreshing at 1080p anymore with the complicated tracks.

I was exactly the same for at least 6 months of doing these races every Wed night. I would get a funny feeling in my stomach on my way home from work because of the nerves. It just takes time. And lots of practice races.

Racing the AI in previous games taught us practically nothing that could carry over into what we're doing here.

Not to mention its near impossible to find anything close to organised series racing in public lobbies, so for people who haven't raced loads in the OE's here, it's definitely not an easy job. As everyone has been saying, for a while (and still now to some extent) so much nerves for quali and first few laps, but the more you race, the more it settles down.

Got a 15 minute video showcasing the highlights surrounding my race (mostly me Tim and Mohit, but others too), and there was some great fun times it must be said, hopefully you will agree when you see the video, it's taking aaagggeess to upload :D
