To honour the beginning of the previous series with Great Britain, I will do the same again for this second running.

The rules are simple: Nominate the best currently produced (2008-2009) British car. Everyone gets one nomination, and if someone mentions yours before you get to, feel free to second it, or add something else.

Also! Don't hesitate to trash talk a bit over the different nominations, that's a big part of what makes this series fun.

To get things started....

================================

For the title of "Best Car: Great Britain," YSSMAN nominates:

The 2008 Jaguar XF

Many of you are aware of my strange (but otherwise silent) love for all things Jaguar. In a world dominated by Mercedes and BMW, Jaguar in my opinion stands out for not following their playbook... Until now. Certainly, the same British standards are used. There is plenty of wood, plenty of high quality leather, and just a feeling of "home" that the otherwise robotic Germans do not have.

Every review I have read has been nothing but positive. Performance is top-notch, quality is of the best, and yet it is still just as quiet and isolated as you'd predict a Jaguar to be. I love their new automatic gear change dial, the pulsing red starter button, and the outside is just plain stunning. Its classic Jaguar, and yet, it is distinctly modern... Showing the way for the entire brand in the future.

Certainly there are other British cars that are more-practical, more-affordable, and may in fact be better choices. But to be honest, all of that doesn't matter when you're choosing a Jaguar.

The XF is just getting acclaim because the S-Type was so bad. The thought of thoroughly modern Jaguar's terrify me, as the XF makes me think they cannot pull it off.

Oh, and Aston Martin V8 Vantage, for being the cheapest, best handling, best looking and best driving of the entire Aston range, which essentially means it is the best GT you can buy. All it is lacking is a V12 engine, which you could probably steal from some old DB7.

Agreed. I too nominate the V8V. I love the purity of the car. I know it's not the best built, but when I first saw one I was completely sold.

I second the Jaguar XF. You can't go past a V8 sedan with family car fills, and GT thrills. But more to the point, Jaguar have finally got their sedan right, and something to take to ze Germans. The car is really good, and is a major step forward for the British auto industry.:)

I third the XF. Big improvement over the last car, and the last one wasn't so bad like a lot of people say it is... It just had a fashion problem.

Lotus Elise S

car_photo_206866_25.jpg

The cheapest Elise which means it's the cheapest version of one of the best British sports cars ever, still quick despite the low power (sub 6-sec to 60mph), the most usable Elise (probably ever given that it's more comfortable than the S1s) and economical (35 miles per UK gallon average). There is no currently produced car from the GB I'd rather own.

If the XF wins this though it's wholeheartedly deserved.

"Out of my way, plebs"

Rolls Royce Phantom

I could have how many Jaguar XFs for that price?:P That car doesn't work for me, I hate all Rolls Royces and Bentleys. Overweight pointless pieces of crap, I'd take a Limo if I wanted luxury that expensive.

A limo? - you mean a stretched Lincoln Town Car? Pa! That's not luxury, that's faux-luxury for hen nights and proms.

Go for it, there's no limit to the number of votes for the same car as far as I'm aware. We've already had a good few for the XF.

I'm surprised that the XF has been seconded so many times, I'd have figured there would have been the addition of a few other notable British cars by now. Some that have blue ovals and fancy Russian owners.

Right, let me get started on why I personally didn't vote for a Ford (rant ahead, beware...). The new Fiesta. Not sure if it counts because it technically isn't on sale yet, but it is the new Ford. I had a look inside one at the motor show. Very nice car, I'm sure it'll drive great too. But I personally think it looks a bit lame compared to the Mazda 2 it's based on, which is a very good looking car. The Ford's styling is kind of all over the place, and that goes for the interior too.

The, the Focus. I've disliked all but the ST since the Mk2 Focus came out, because it looks like a Kia before Kia started making good looking cars like the cee'd. And I can't vote for the ST because it's driven by cretins.

The Mondeo. Great car again, but personally I don't find it's a very cohesive looking thing, it's a bit flabby compared to it's predecessor. It's also one of those cars I've got bored of because the press are going on about it so much, and I kinda like rooting for the underdog. Something so good in every way just sends me into a coma.

The Kuga. Again, not bad, but I'm not keen on the styling, and really I'd prefer the VW Tiguan if I was getting a small soft-roader :)

The rest of the range is just a variation on the MPV theme - Fusion, C-max, S-max, Galaxy. By definition, people carriers are the least cool vehicles ever devised. So I can't vote for them.

The only current Ford I genuinely love is the Ka, and that's 12 years old. And Ford are spoiling that too by releasing a new one which isn't as pretty as the 500 it's based on, looks fat and flabby compared to the lean original, and goes against the ethos that made the original so great.

But given the choice between even the original Ka and the Lotus Elise S, I'm afraid the Elise gets my vote :sly:

I think the crux of the problem is that the current Ford range is worthy but dull. Given the choice, there are plenty of other British cars that people would choose ahead of the Fords in this vote. 👍

And the Rolls is different how?:sly:

The XF is a cool and exciting car that's why, and smart advances are always noted for a country.

And the Rolls is different how?:sly:

Because it's made using the finest materials. It's not built down to a budget. Until you actually see a Phantom in the flesh you can't comprehend the scale and presence of the thing, it's truly epic. ;)

The Caterham Classic
caterham_seven_28_06_06.jpg

This is raw motoring at it's roots.

For just £12,995 you get a car that attracts attentive looks when you drive it, strikes up conversation when you park it and gives you the respect of every red blooded male when you drive it down the motorway in the rain heading to your next track day.

Sure, 0-60 in 6.5 secs isn't much to write home about nowadays, but when your ass is inches off the floor and the wind is in your face it'll feel alot less.

Ooh! I second the Caterham Classic for all the above reasons.

Astra VXR.
I like hothatches and I like this one. It appeals to me for its looks sound and its power.

To be honest, it was the first car I thought of. Bentley has me hook, line and sinker.

The thing is when talking the the chauffers in london they actually dont have many great things to say about their bentleys. They say in a straight line its great. But driving it in the city and around corners its apparently a bit like driving a bus.

To be quite honest with you... buses are easy as hell to drive. I remember talking to a few wile taking one to the city and they all said it's really easy... You just have to pay attention when turning.

James May on Top Gear backs me up on this one because I remember him mentioning that buses are easy to drive on the show.

:D

On the whole Bentley thing, I've kind of gone off them. I like the big Arnage saloons. All the new ones are too footballery.

It was either that or the mini cooper s lol.

Could have chosen the Cooper S Works which has just come out 👍 Unless that's now no longer built using bits from Cooper Garages like the last Works Minis were.

The Elise is already picked, but not what I want!

Exige 240 S

It's light, it's got power, and it looks epic.
