My next road track event Grattan Raceway Saturday 7-25-09

That time of the year again and I need to get ready for my next road track event with my 69 Camaro.

The event is 2 days away and I almost had a major problem this week. The bolt that goes to my slave cylinder rod then to my brake pedal broke off while I was on the highway! Completely lost my clutch pedal. So luckily I put the slave cylinder eye bolt on the other side of the thread and that got me home. I replaced that bolt with a new one but that could have been frustrating at the track.

I also had an exhaust shop cut out my header couplers and weld in a straight pipe on each side about 6 inches long. The header flange always bottomed out all the time anyway and then would leak. This was the perfect solution and it also sounds much better.

So with that said I still have a few bugs to work out before the event this Saturday.
-Fuel cell cap is a pain to get out. I need fix it or buy a new one (only problem is that it costs $60.00).
-I would like to make a hood latch.
-Check all fluids and typical routine checkup.
-Seal header gasket leak up by block.
-Build a better temporary camcorder mount.
-Check rear end to make sure ring bolts are tight.
-Wont have time to put in poly body mounts that I bought.

I made some decent progress last night. I re-engineered the fuel cell cap. Such a terrible design and now it works real well. I just saved myself $60.00 by modifying the current design. Took about an hour but I am very happy to have that working.

I also started working on a hood prop rod but decided to hold off on that for now. I will wait until I have more time to design it so I can blend it in with the radiator support. Also had Heather vacuum and clean out the interior so now it looks really nice again inside.

Then I cleaned up around the engine block where the headers meet and I used some super silicone to seal up the headers. After that re-painted the entire exhaust from the engine to rear with hi heat spray paint.

Finally I topped off almost all the fluids. I even drained and replaced the slave cylinder fluid with high heat DOT 3-4 fluid. Didnt get to work on the camera mount yet either. Not sure if I want to mess with that but we will see how I feel tonight. Otherwise I will just use my tripod like I normally do. Tonight I will do an oil change for sure and then everything should be all set for tomorrow. I will post a couple pics later.

Finally got the car up to 2 inches of clearance after having the header flanges removed and after adding the spring spacers. I used to only have 1" of clearance.


For those wondering, here is the header flange that I bypassed. Now I dont have to worry about gaskets or clearance.

The July 25th Saturday Grattan event went real well. Had a few minor setbacks but still drove every single time my group went out. I had a throttle bracket bolt come loose but that only set me back about 10 minutes then I was back out there again.

I had a blast and drove the Camaro home with no problem. So that makes 7 straight years of beating the car up and still driving it home from every event. Been very lucky with it. The last battle I had with a gutted out BMW was so awesome! I wish I had my camcorder hooked up this year but the battery never charged. I have pics but they dont show much.

I also have a small rear diff leak that I need to fix. Also want to get some coil overs for the front. Along with getting rid of the rear drums for sure since they dont even work. After a few other upgrades this car should be even more fun out there.

My main focus next year will be to get Heathers 67 Fastback Mustang on the track but that has a long way to go. But if all else fails, the Camaro will be back out there again.

well first let me tell you, there are some details about your car I may not like, like the clear rearlamps and the design of the billet wheels (unique indeed, but I cant get them to grow on me), but I find absolutely awesome that you trash your car as soundly as you do for such a long time and it still makes battle. More owners should act like you and run their cars at WHATEVER they wish, the fact that you track it and that it is so -relatively- basic (rear drum brakes, IE) is even better. Big respect, man.

And, my, that thing is LOW. dangerously low!
