Does car wash even do anything?

I fail to see the difference after I wash my car. Has anyone come across pictures of the car in a race before and after a wash?

I do like the cartoon like spinning and sound fx :dunce:

I find it to be more noticeable in GT3 than 4. It just makes the car cleaner and shiny. If you notice the car seems a bit dull with reflections, wash it.

It actually has a performance advantage to wash your car.

After a while the car becomes dirty and gains some aerodynamic drag, this can be seen as a difference of a few full MPH in top speed.

Wow that is kind of interesting. I hope future installments have some way to do a quick wash or oil change from the garage, instead of having to equip the car and then go to the shop and then watch it spin if im short on time.

I've had cars in GT1, GT3, and GT4 that I've never washed. There definitely is a diff in these 3 games. Paint starts to oxydize (think that's the word...) and the finish gets that look to it like it would sound VERY HARSH if you scraped your fingernails against it!

GT2 is the only game in which long bouts of driving without a wash does very little damage to that PD poly/shine. I never used the car wash in this game.

**Just a side-note, something I forgot to mention 3 months ago. In GT4 while I was testing the TCV5, I made sure to get a car wash for every 50 miles (or thereabouts) that I drove, because there eventually is a very small difference in straight speed if you don't do this. 💡

Its Oxidise ;)

I heard they clean the air intakes and other engine parts as well...
and you do see a little more shine on the car.

I'm cleaning and oil changing my R8 after every WC event.

I hope they come out with some way to get a wash and oil change quicker if it means a tad more performance (when the cursor is over a car they should ad a lube n wash option next to the sell option). I do notice the tiny gain in hp with oil changes I didnt know that washes gave an edge.

Hopefully in GT5 they have a fancier wash with actual water and soap running off the car. that would kick ass.

Oh wow, never knew that before, thanks!

I've found the cars that look the most obviously dull and faded without washing are the ones with flip paint, like the TVRs. Washing these makes a big difference to the look of the car.

I sometimes like keeping certain cars away from the wash, to make them look as though they're owned by a negligent person. In GT1, my very first Silvia Q's never got a wash. It's got a look to it, like one of those autos you see in the trailer park. Looks like crap, but little do you know there's 300+ horsepower under the hood. ;)

The car I never used to wash was the Tommy Kaira ZZ-II in GT3. I had a black one and it was by far the car I used the most. The paint got so dirty there were no reflections on it at all and had a matt finish :D

Really??? I always wash my car but also failed to identify the difference except that the car is a little bit shinier... Didn't know that it really affect the performance of the car seriously!!!

Thanks for the info guys :)

I have a hard time believing this in a game where even slapping a bigass wing on a car and then putting it up to max doesn't even have any effect on top speed.

Uh... wing drag does have an effect on top speed.

If you don't experience it... you're not driving fast enough.

I normally wash my cars before enduro races, particularly at Le Mans. The dirt and whatever crap gets washed off, resulting in better straight line speeds.

Guess not, but then, I did test it on High Speed Ring for top speed measurements - before and after.
And was stunned to note that fitting the wing and turning it up into max downforce made zero difference at all.

Maybe it's a bug - heck, it's *certain* it's a bug. (Can't remember which car it was exactly, though, only know it wasn't a high-horsepower one.)

I believe it would only have an effect on a car after a particular speed is reached. Plus you probably need longer gearing for your 6th gear to reach a higher speed that would otherwise be capped due to the downforce provided by the rear wing.

You simply don't go fast enough or quickly enough do you?

Wings can make a huge difference to a car's acceleration and top speed properties, in some instances making differences of up to 0.3sec quicker in a 400m space and can slow a car by up to and over 10mph. And it's not a case of slapping it all on max settings and off you go, no. Some cars respond better with only front downforce, some with rear only and others with a combination of both, in either minimal or maximum amounts. I suggest doing testing at the Test Course and also try a lap or two around the nurburgring with the settings at 0/0, then again at 30/30. There's a big difference between the two, the cornering speeds are so much faster with the downforce on.

The type of wing (whether it's 3D A, B, C, D or Straight Type A, B or C) hasn't shown much of a difference, it's the settings of the wings that make it. But for looks, people choose one type of wing over another.

Like I said: I was doing top speed tests on (not High Speed Ring, it was Test Course, the big oval).
Wasn't puttering around, the car went as fast as it would go (and it wasn't a van or somesuch). But putting the wing on, even at max angle, still didn't have any effect. Zero. As said, I think it's a bug somewhere.

I do have some experience with wings and their effects in sims, mainly from GPL - although the cars we race there lately have upforce, not downforce (to some hardcore GPL racers, 'downforce' and 'grip' are for wussies! ;) )

RaidoGT - What car were you using and can you give us the specs and settings for your car? Perhaps you have run into a car in GT4 that doesn't work with a wing.

I normally start to see the effects of the wing's downforce at speeds above 75mph.

Perhaps you had the transmission set too short and your car was hitting the redline in both tests.

Mafia_boy has a lot more experience than me in regard to top speed runs, but I always see the effect that he mentions during my runs at any high speed track.

What speed were you doing and where you maxing out in 6th gear?

Like I said, I can't remember which car I used at the time. Only that it wasn't a high-horsepower vehicle, which was doing around 200 kph tops. But I definitely remember that it was able to fit a wing, and that putting it on did zero to the vmax, even after putting it up to 30.

RaidoGT....your comment brings me back to the first line of what I previously said, you aren't going fast enough for downforce to be really effective. At those speeds you will see bigger differences in the handling aspects (increased corner speed) more than top speed reduction.

You may see 1-2km/h difference at most when your top speed is only 200km/h. When you're doing more than double that, for example 400km/h in any car....you see the huge differences of downforce on top speed. 👍

Ah.

There are some cars, like the Ford Focus RS and Renault Clio Sport which redline at top speed. You wouldn't see a difference in top speed in those cars.

For F1 cars and LMPs, the effects of total downforce (front and rear) have a large effect on top speeds.

Not entirely true Niky. Like I said, if you're gunning for 400km/h like I do with FF cars like the Focus RS, the downforce affects the car greatly!! And due to it's light weight when fully worked (411hp/950kg), it becomes an exercise in using the downforce to reduce wheelspin when the nitrous is hit vs getting the best top speed possible from the downforce holding you back.

Well... redlines at top speed on the stock gearbox... ...and hits that speed at stock power levels... just like my car... it's somewhere around 220-225 km/h... (the reaching of which was purely an academic exercise to find out if it could do in real-life what it could do in Turismo... the answer to which is... yes... )

yea guy it must be your car's speed trust me when your up in the 240's-260's and better that wing has full effect and you will feel it!

Some AWDs go quicker with maxed wings than with no downforce. Welcome to power shake, part of the phenomena that allows lowish powered AWDs go much, much faster than RWDs without using the wheelie glitch.

Okay i just got hella into this game

and i dont know what the point of the carwash is when your car doesnt even get dirty

so can someone tell me?

haha yea i know its probly a dumb question!

The car loses shine as you drive it. For example, drive a car for around 400km, and give it a car wash. You will see it's shinier than before.
