Denur asked me to drop a few lines of my experiences with the Room299 demo, so here we go:
During the presentation at the start of the event we saw a slick promotional video of Playstation with some GT5 footage which we already saw from the E3 trailer. The Room299 concept was focused on the presentation of the brand Playstation as more than only games. The move and various other services were presented which most of us are already familiar with: mubi, vidzone, comics etc..
Luckily de demo’s shown in Room299 were all about gaming. From various Move games to several 3D games like Motorstrom pacific Rift, Killzone and various PSN titles. Offcourse Gran Turismo 5 was present. A quick Q&A during the presentation learned that the demo was E3 code according to the SCEE product manager.
When we got all our equipment setup ( unfortunately there was a problem with the sound

) we noticed this Room299 version was way smaller then the E3 version, less circuits and cars to choose from. For the complete list checkout the video’s Denur posted above. Although the demo had a recent build date there were no extra features present. It was actually a bit buggy and not everything was translated, you can see the translation labels from the videos. The loading of der ring didn’t go always in a smooth way. Sometimes when the race started everything stayed green as there were no track objects loaded, this stayed for 10 to 30secs before everything went back to normal.
When starting a game from the main menu it was possible to adjust “difficulty” settings, like automatic gearbox, tires etc.. like we are all familiar with. The setting for gearbox wasn’t saved, so in the race menu this setting had to be adjusted back to manual. These are all small things that one can expect from an early build.
Unfortunately this build had a time limit so I tested a couple of cars and tracks. We at
GTHQ previously have held a live event for our members with the SLS AMG demo. So I did some comparison with the Room299 build and the SLS AMG demo build. The SLS AMG build is showed the nurburgring from GT4 which was updated to HD graphics. The Room299 had the latest Nurburgring graphics and track objects. The SLS AMG in the Room 299 was more pleasant to drive, it was less snappy then the SLS AMG Demo build. This was very noticeable when hitting the high curbstones on the ring. It was a real struggle to keep the SLS AMG demo Mercedes on the right track, in the Room299 demo it was more easy as the video’s showed. This was noticeable on all tracks and cars, and double checked the car settings even in game with the “jogdial” on the GT wheel.
The sounds of the cars were ok, unfortunately the sound boxes on the demo rig were not from the best quality but there was a bit of rumble noticeable when driving the SLS AMG in low revs and from the Chevy.
A few strange things were seen in this demo. All the cars had the same horn sound. The AI made a mistake (or bugged) and totally missed a corner and spinned out into the gravel. I noticed this when I was uploading the video’s otherwise I could have tested the AI a bit more.
As seen from the menu’s in the video, only time trail and single race were available. I also have a video of the ring driving it backward for the 2minutes, if you want to see that one to, please let me know.
I also had a little talk with a product manager from SCEE and had nothing special to tell next to his marketing talks as we can expect from a product manager. He didn’t reveal any new information but I got a statement that indicates how big GT5 will be. “What we have seen at the GamesCom is only 5% of the total game”. So we can expect more features to be announced or will see it in game. On the E3 and GamesCom we only saw single player features, hopefully we will see at TGS more multiplayer (although Japan isn’t a very multiplayer/online country). I don’t expect the remaining 95% will be the multiplayer part

So far my report on the Room299 demo!
