Moving from DS3 to a wheel.. Experiences?

I'm a total wheel virgin, for any game, but I'm very interested in investing in a G25 to up my game a bit.

Something I'm a bit worried about is: will I quickly adjust to using a wheel?

I don't drive IRL, I'm only 18 and haven't yet bought any lessons or anything. I don't know anyone else with a steering wheel to go and play with.
I've played for the last 3 months with a DS3 so I'm really worried that I might end up being a lot slower with the wheel and then get fed up with it.

One of my main reasons for wanting the G25 is that I'm absolutely loving this game ATM, so I really want to invest in something much more precise and realistic than the DS3. I love the idea of the H shifter, sequential and paddles as well.

Main question is though: has anyone here recently moved from a DS3 to a steering wheel? If so, what was your experience like? Do you now find the game more enjoyable? Have your lap times improved since the switch? And is your driving more accurate?

I'm in the process of it. I made a post about it but it hasn't appeared yet on the fourms. I'm pretty much the same as you though.

I borrowed a mates DFGT a few months back. Your times will definitely start off slower, but give it a week or two and you'll be much faster than any DS3 time you've set. You just have to stick it out and practice, practice, practice!

The only thing I found a little annoying was the way I had to have it setup as I didn't really have a proper mount, or table that was the right height. I'll be looking to buy a wheel soon, and when I do, I'll be getting/making some sort of mount.

As for not having driven a car before, I doubt that will make any difference really. It's not exactly like driving a real car.

The first time I used my wheel, I hated it... I couldn't take a turn without spinning out. I actually returned it in the first week. This was with GT5P.

I bought a DFGT wheel along with GT5 when it came out, and I've only played with the wheel now. It took me a day to get used to it.. and then after a week or so I was playing better than with the DS3. I haven't kept a close watch on my lap times, but I just can't play with the DS3 anymore, it feels un-natural when turning a corner.

DFGT wheel has paddle shifting buttons, and that's what I use for shifting. It doesn't have a clutch either, but I don't really care about that.

The best thing about the wheel is that you have way more control when you are taking a turn, making very small adjustments during the turn is easy compared with the DS3.

However, once a car gets out of control, its harder to correct with the wheel, or maybe I just haven't learned that skill yet. Also there maybe some dead-zone with the wheel when you are going straight, so the car might start to wobble side to side, but all you have to do is hold the wheel steady and don't let it go side to side. Control the wheel, don't let the force feedback control you.

All in all, the game is much more fun with the wheel...

I got my G27 wheel today. I even bugh a racing cheir.
After playing GT2, GT3, GT4 and GT5 whit the DS/DS2/DS3. It will be a completely different driving experience. I have to learn to drive again.

Are going to practice on license tests. But this time I am taking the gold trophies.

So all the fast cars I have in the garage, just have to wait

After reading the above comments and then receiving an email from Dabs advertising a G27 for £200, I went for it! Gonna order a Wheel Stand Pro tomorrow as well.

Let's hope I enjoy this :D. I think I might buy TDU2 as well, that's apparently a VERY good game to play with a steering wheel if you just wanna cruise about :).

Thanks for all the comments and advice people, appreciate it :).

I don't like steering wheels, they aren't chill enough :)
hoowever I got forced to use it on the vettel challenge if I ever were going to bronze it. Took me about 1 hour before I started setting much better lap times with it.

I played my whole life with a DS3 and the last month i bought a Fanatec, the first time you try to play with clutch and h shifter it will be very awkward i remember i forgot to brake sometimes, but with time you get used to it, now im faster with a wheel than with the DS3 :sly:

It only has 1 con it is a lot harder to controll powerslides/drift with a wheel.. :scared:

I had a hard time to get used to tha wee. But the I tried the Lotus Elise 111R RM ’04 whit this setup:

313BHP, 27KGFM/7800RPM, 720KGS

[edit] Settings:
Aerodynamics set to MAX

Transmission- 186MPH

LSD- Initial- 20
Accel- 45
Brake- 15

Suspension:

Ride Height- Front -25 (Minus)
Rear -25 (Minus)

Spring Rate- Front 5.2
Rear 7.2

Dampers- Extension: Front 4, Rear 6
Compression: Front 4, Rear 5

ARB- Both 1

Camber- Front 1.0, Rear 0.5

Toe- Front 0.10, Rear 0.25

Brakes- Front 5, Rear 6

And all aids on. And now I finally starting to manege the weel

what sort of differences in time are you seeing between a wheel and a pad?

I am 2 sec slower on Rome driving the Lotus Elise 111R RM ’04, when I am using the wheel. And I am very new on wheel.

But i expect that it vil be bether when I am good enough to turn of the aids.

This thread is a great read written by someone who made huge strides in performance over time switching from DS3 to G25 and documents his progress throughout this time

If you're a racing game nut like many of us, I think you will love it. It requires a bit a patience at first, but when you get used to it you will wonder why you didn't get one sooner. Also, a bit of advice, if you drive standard in real life, drive standard in the game. If you drive automatic in real life, get used to using the wheel and pedals first before trying to use the gears on the game. This will make the transition a little easier.

Ive changed last week but only got a little wheel :( but i was advised to switch to manual transmission aswell to make the experience better and i must say the races are a lot closer mainly because of the over revving to get used to changing gears ...
I would say go for it ... good experience

I'm slowly getting used to mine, I hated it at first and was worried I'd spent £100 on something I'd never use again.

Don't start off driving a high powered car in a race like I did, use a bog standard car of around 90 BHP and get on the Cape Ring in a practice.

I like driving in 3rd person normally but I hate to say the view where the speedo and rev counter are on the screen are the best for the wheel.

I played through 90% of the game with the DS3. Took out the wheel for the Vettel challenge. Now I just can't seem to enjoy it with the DS3 anymore. Imo Driving with a wheel and all assists off is how this meant to be played. After a few days you will be sliding around cars for fun and holding unsaveable slides here and there. A lot more satisfying.

I bought my first wheel as well - the DFGT about a month after GT5 came out. It took about a week or so, but you will get faster for sure. You can hold the lines in the corners so much better, and the overall experience absolutely is worth it.

I love it and wished I would have bought one sooner. And I bought the DFGT on sale for $99. Can't beat it.

IYour times will definitely start off slower, but give it a week or two and you'll be much faster than any DS3 time you've set.

A week or two isn't enough if you were good with a DS3. It may be enough for a mediocre player as there isn't so much to be gained but if you're truly skilled with the pad it surely isn't. It might be a case of months - the first weeks can be enough to reach the "above average" level but returning to the very top takes longer.

I remember when I first switched over back on GT4. It definitely took some getting used to. I went through and did all the licenses for bronze then went back and did silver and by the time I finished that I have to say I was feeling very comfortable with it. Now on GT5 I gold several of the tests on the first go and I have to say it is definitely due in part to using the wheel.

If you are getting a G25 wheel then I would suggest having it set-up properly as well. When the pedals are not set-up properly it really kills the experience I find.

I made something similar to this.

The pedals can be taken apart and arranged how you like. The G25/27 are very easy to mod if not made to be modded. Having the pedals like that makes it way easier to feather and throttle and brake I find. And that's exactly what makes the game easier with a wheel. The throttle and brake control. Especially driving that RUF Yellowbird for example without proper throttle control, your spinning!

My transition from the DS3 to the wheel was seamless. My friends(who are good drivers) that aren't gamers and first time GT players picked it up easy.

Same as majority here, i've played GT for YEARS !!! and always used a controller, had my wheel 2 days now and OMG ! What a difference !! The game is more like a Racing Sim now, feels like its how the developers want it to be. I also own a 360 and am in the process of buying a wheel for that too, it's changed me that much!

I have only one gripe, I bought the DFGT and it takes a while to get used to the 900 degree turn, they could do with allowing us to change between 200 & 900. But I suppose thats all about the realism.

Oh wow that sucks. Now I'm kind of glad I held onto my Pro. 200 mode is nice for F1 cars and helped a lot on vettel

I can only imagine how much better it is ! F1's feel comfy but the Vettel Challenge damn !! I could gold them with 200 but nooooo !! The amount of times I've ended up in Suzuka's Gravel facing the wrong way .. Lol
