Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, told Forbes the following:
"PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. Technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have....So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time."

My instinct tells me his meaning for quite some time, is in fact not very long at all.
As a company they will be forced into talking about it by this time next year.

I think you could take his words in different contexts.
I would take it as he knows the PS3 can not be improved and way to be technologically better, using the hardware it has. Thus reading a PS4 with new hardware can be technologically better, as it has to be, scientifically there are many ways for a console to be better than the PS3. SO he is basically talking rubbish just to get people calm and still buy games for the PS3. If true I think he is being too manipulative saying "quite some time". He is saying zero facts while at the same time just controlling the media and the customer. He earns money for that, he should do more.

Of course he said that. He wants you to buy a PS3 now, not hold onto your cash for a PS4 later. What did you expect him to say?

The PS3 has got a 10 year lifespan according to Sony but that doesn't mean they won't release a new console. They will, when they think the time is right. That could be next year for all anyone really knows.

The PS4 has been in development since the PS3 was released, all console manufacturers work like that. The revisions in the PS3 architecture came about as fixes were needed to be applied to faults in the hardware (same with the XBox360, hence the revisions in the motherboard, and finally the reliability levels with the Jasper board levels). The PS3 slim only came about thanks to the quad-core and small factor (low nm) processors being developed for the PS4.

In a shareholders meeting in 2010, Sony announced that the PS4 was 'ready for release by 2012 at the earliest'.

If you remember, the PS2 still had titles being developed for it after the PS3 was released (even if it was poor quality movie tie-ins), and so that is what they will mean by the PS3 having a lifespan of 10 years.

Jack Tretton maybe saying it, but that's certainly not how Sony is Japan is thinking because it was confirmed by Masaru Kato last month that the PS4 is in development.

Obviously they want people to focus on the current gen because that's what they are selling but I think all the Wii U and next Xbox hype has made the press start to push Sony for more info on 'whats next'.

I could see the PS4 coming soon (within the next 2 years) with the PS3 having some cross over period like with the PS2.

I don't know, I think Sony could always make a couple of adjustments to the PS3 and make it last another few years. I mean, all the REALLY need to do is change the blu-ray and the graphics card.

But then all the newer PS3 games wouldn't run on older systems creating a two tier console... in essence a new console!

What they could do is overclock (or rather remove the underclock) the RSX and free up the extra core in the Cell currently reserved for the XMB (which is shrinking with every update). That coupled with constant game optimization would give a major kick to the performance without any new hardware.

Honestly, I fear I have joined the PS3 party too late. That's mostly because of the whole 10-year plan deal. I feared that the PS3's interest was going to wane in hopes of what the PlayStation 4 will bring. So seeing this deal posted is a bit unusual.

Other option, scaleable games. If it works on PC why can't it work for PS3. Games default to standard settings but scales up to new hardware.

Crisis is a good example on PC, it scales(down) to your hardware. Xbox 360 has a 2 tier system with Kinect. Kinect is not free and requires a new hardware purchase and games(*shivers) that only work with Kinect. Scaleable games are more practical than 2 tier. Silly idea I know, just i thought nothing more.

They'll never do this though. They're not going to give consumers the choice to not upgrade and still play the next gen of games.

My bets are on a PS and Xbox reveal at next year's E3, especially with the Wii U being released sometime around then, MS and Sony are going to want to do something to draw attention away from the big N. That would pave the way for a 2013 release date.

Who knows though, I mean Sony went and renamed the NGP the Vita.. So I have a feeling someone in marketing has been off his meds lately.

I said it was silly. And it was an option to Robin replay to SuperShoden's idea.

But they did not rename it Vita. It was Project Vita from Day one. That was mentioned in pretty much all the interviews from one of Sony's presidents in the last week. NGP was a placeholder/codename for a name they already had.

They all claimed their consoles would last 10 years this generation, but the reality is that the market demands new consoles, it's got nothing to do with technology. Nintendo knows.

It's actually a pretty audacious quote and it's the kind of foot-in-mouth attitude Sony has been famous for. Sort of like when they said people will work longer hours to afford $600 PS3s.

On the other side of the fence Microsoft thinks Kinect has doubled the life of the 360. I sure as hell hope not, Kinect sucks and I'm tired of all these moron publishers pushing motion controls into games that don't need it just because there's even dumber people who buy things for novelty.

(Disclaimer: I don't care who I offend with that statement, I stand by it.)

You do know when Sony or Microsoft say their console has 7 years or 10 years or whatever left in it, it doesn't mean a next gen console wont come before then and it's not audacious at all.

MS only just mentioned the 360 is about halfway through it's lifecycle, however that doesn't mean Xbox next is 5+ years away

It's good you stand by it, I'm with you. Never been a fan of this motion stuff, just improve the new machines by monster proccesing power and everything will improve, A.I., physics, scale, complexity and of course, graphics.
People saying graphics are unimportant are hypocrits in my eyes, better graphics mean a more realistic experience and more of everything on the screen.

I was hoping that the Ps3 would be line the Ps2, in the time span between both consoles.

BUT! Technology is evolving faster and faster these days, compared to the days of Ps1 and Ps2. So I wouldn't see why they wouldn't bring out a new console. Especially if it is the Xbox markets main competition.

Xbox launched in late 2005, if MS were going to bring out a console by 2012 (7 years) they'd have to have already announced it and sent key developers early kits; I can assure you that hasn't happened. We're at least 2 years to a console launch... so 8 years minimum, maybe more? It's quite possible they mean what they say. They make like 400% profit on a Kinect and usually lose money on consoles. Until people stop buying them, they won't respond with new products.

I didn't say it was coming out in 2012 anywhere, but yeah. Personally I expect news on it to come in 2012 but probably not a release unless it was laaate 2012.

I personally think one year later. I think news of the console in 2013 and release in 2014. Remember when they announce a new console the previous console's sales plummet. I don't think they want to have that with just releasing ever kinnect and move on ps3's side. I think both consoles will come out at the same time.

It is some 3years away if not more
If you take a look at the PC market you'll recon there are more and more powerful pc gaming for a cheaper price every year, now with 500€ you can buy something interesting, better than actual consoles. With 500€ in the next 6 months you will find even better hardware, and so on.. when technology will move forward enough to really put the price/perforance ratios of actual consoles to shame it will be time to release something new and Sony knows that.

I wouldn't trade my PS3 and all my games for a free $4000 ultra gaming rig let alone a $500+ one. There are a multitude of other factors in consoles VS PC. I gave up pc gaming 3 years ago the need for new hardware has turned me of as I got tired of playing 3-4 year old pc games. The PS3 has changed that for me.

But 3 years? I do not think so. 2 at most. PS3 has a lot of life left in it though. Much more than the Wii. I just finished Killzone 2 and the last level looks just so amazing I was thinking how could they possible make KZ3 look better.... ..they did.

Pretty major 'adjustments' aren't they? That's a whole new console right there :dunce:

But when you power it on and everything is exactly the same its not really all that new. The freshness just isn't there to be a whole new console. Powering on Dreamcast or Xbox 360 for the first time was breathtaking, it all felt so new. Being taken away why by all the lush 16-bit colors on a brand new Super Nintendo running Super Mario World is what a new console experience is.

The problem is that PCs aren't consoles. Televisions are standardized, and PC monitors are not (at least relatively speaking).

PC's have been more powerful than the PS3 since the PS3 has been out. Crysis 2 will run on a slower computer than 2007's Crysis 1 and at the same time looks better. Ill-informed arguements about PC's needing to be upgraded often are getting old. It is infact largely due to consoles holding back game companies that a high quality PC of 2006-2007 will still greatly outperform both consoles in quality and FPS on the same games.

The PS3 has been out for a few years and is still providing good games but I think if Nintendo are going to make a point of pressuring them with a modern high performance console then Sony will have to eventually bite the bullet on the PS4, even if it is sooner than they had hoped.

Consoles have always trailed far behind the PC in graphics terms, and to be honest the current generation is the closest to keeping up with the PC's that it has ever been, but that is largely down to the popularity of consoles after taking innovations and technologies from the PC (online gaming) and making them work at an affordable level. Thus forcing many game devs to make games for all systems, delaying the previously massive leaps in constant improvement with graphics in PC games.

In the passed we saw leaps in graphical quality, now were just seeing games become better optimised with fps and detail, though effectively only making small steps in quality over previous generations.

Best examples can be seen with Crysis 1 > Crysis 2 and the upcoming Oblivion > Skyrim games. Until we see the first of the next generation consoles, the PC will be sticking around a lot, and thus upgrades in your PC hardware will not be needed.

Yeah Sony and the gamer might know that, but what about the average joe who is more interested in his k/d ration in mw2 than graphics cards? Most console purchasers rarely know about about the PC gaming market.

Besides that, most people who hear the letters "PC" often think "too complicated".

Sony, and Microsoft may produce inferior technological products, but they are not too worried about the PC game market eating their share.

Report: The PlayStation 4 Will Have Kinect-Style Motion Controls

Brian Ashcraft — Next year, Nintendo is releasing a new home console, the Wii U. Taiwanese component makers tell tech site DigiTimes that Sony is readying a new home console for 2012. But that's not the interesting part.

These component manufacturer sources tell DigiTimes that the PlayStation 4 will feature body-movement controls like Microsoft's Kinect. That's the interesting, if not unexpected, part.

The PS3 currently has PlayStation Move motion controls, which are similar to the Wii's motion controls.

The report states Foxconn and Pegatron Technology will assemble the PS4 for Sony. Foxconn and Pegatron Technology both assemble the PS3, which was originally manufactured in Japan.

Sources told DigiTimes that the PS4 will go into production at the end of 2011 for a 2012 launch. Apparently Sony will manufacture 20 million PS4 consoles for 2012.

Previously, Kotaku reported that 2014 seems likely for a new Sony or Microsoft console—2013 if either Sony or Microsoft feels pushed. 2013 seems like a far more realistic date for a new PlayStation 4 than 2012, which is next year.

What's more, America's slow economic recovery could make launching after 2012 ultimately more profitable. Also, Sony is releasing its new portable, the PS Vita this year, and the Tokyo-based electronics giant might need a breather between hardware launches.
Taiwan-based component makers tell DigiTimes that the PlayStation 4 will feature body-movement controls like Microsoft's Kinect.

If DigiTimes' sources are correct, Sony could look to get the jump on Microsoft and thwart Nintendo in one fell swoop.

Since the PS3 launched, Sony has touted the machine's 10 year lifespan. The PS3 launched in 2006, six years into the PS2's lifespan. Even after the PS3 launched, Sony continued to support the PlayStation 2.

If the PlayStation 4 launches in 2012, that would be six years into the PS3's lifespan. Sony could continue to support the PS3 as it did with the PlayStation 2.

Kotaku reached out to Sony and will update this post should the company comment.

Sony to start production of PS4 at end of 2011, say Taiwan makers

Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Monday 4 July 2011]

Sony will have Taiwan-based partners begin production of PlayStation 4 (PS4) featuring body movement-based control like Kinect at the end of 2011 for launch in 2012, according to Taiwan-based component makers.

Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, assemblers of PS3, will undertake assembly of PS4 as well, the sources pointed out. The planned shipment volume of PS4 in 2012 is at least 20 million units, the sources indicated.
