G25/G27 Buttons Wiring

Basically, I was thinking of purchasing a Logitech G27 or G25 in the hope of removing the wheel from the base and making my own f1 style wheel and re attaching this. What I was hoping to do was to simply re-connect the wires that currently connect to the buttons on the wheel, to my new buttons on the f1 style wheel.

However as I do not own either wheel I am not sure if it will work. I have found this image of what I think is the G25: http://jlvrh.de/design/G27_1.jpg that suggests it may be possible.

Any ideas on whether this idea is possible? If so, would it be easily done on both the G25 & G27?

As I said, I can't take the wheel apart to check as I don't own them and I don't want to purchase anything until I'm sure it can be done. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anything is possible, of course, but if you use a G25 you'll only have two buttons. I think that photo is of a G27, I'm not certain but it looks like a lot of wiring and circuitry for the two buttons and paddles on the G25, but I only had a quick look on my phone so I may be wrong as I've never opened a G2x wheel either.

Personally what I suggest is that you modify your wheel so that you can wire up a duplicate of the board inside the shifter so you can have the standard wheel buttons alongside the 12 from the shifter. That would be difficult, though.

Edit: Yeah, that's a G27 in the photo, observe the file name...

Edit again: How capable are you with electronics?
 
I am only capable with electronics to GCSE standard and was looking to do something like this for my A2 project in Product Design . So I don't want to get too complicated, just looking to keep things reasonably basic in terms of electronics.

EDIT: Are you saying the wires in the image above connect to 3 buttons on each side? If so could I not just solder them to a push to make switch or something on a new wheel?
 
As much I would love to make something as cool as that, I really don't think I have the mechanical skills. xD

It does look like that's the case, yeah, but it's hard to say without having a closer look. I can't see why Logitech would go to the effort of reducing the wires needed for the six buttons, though, so I'd put money on you being able to solder up your own buttons with very little effort. It may be a little bit tricky to work out which wire is common, but then they might be colour coded... The most effort it'll require is getting a multimeter with a continuity setting and checking each button to work out which wires are shorted when a button is pressed.

If you do get a G27 feel free to send me some high-resolution photos and I might be able to help you more, if you need it.
 
Yes it is absolutely possible and, as I understand it, as simple as soldering your new buttons in place of the originals. Inside the G27 wheel (under the little plastic bits that hold the three buttons on each side of the rim) are two small pieces on PCB with three buttons (I think they are technically known as membrane switches). As for the actually procedure I'm not positive how it's done but I have seen it done in several places, in fact Derek Spears actually sells button plates for most aftermarket wheel rims with 6 per placed holes just for relocating the original buttons.

I used the original wires from my G27 to make my wheel. I just clipped the wires from the circuit board (there is one common wire and then the three signal return wires) and made them longer so I could place the button where I wanted on my wheel.

I know some-one that did this with a G25 and repeated the buttons on the wheel.
Eg solder wires to the buttons on the shifter then run those wires through into your new wheel. The buttons are then in parallel with each other so pressing either one will work.

Actually Grayfox117's pictures were the exact ones I was thinking of lol.

If you weren't aware of it, here is Derek Speare's site that I mentioned, it may come as some use to you in your project. Now reading that page again it seems his G27 plates are fully pre-wired so you just have to plug it into the wheel board and go, certainly a simpler option.

The buttons plug into PCB behind wheel. I had to forcibly remove the buttons/brackets off the wheel. Then once I had them off I used a continuity meter to see which was the common one before I cut the wires off the pcb. By using the exsiting harness/connectors you can easily plug or unplug your new wheel.
 
sorry this issue has been dead for ages, but I'll give it a try though: Grayfox117, since you already did the measuring, can you tell me which are the common ground? Is it the outside or the inside pin?
