Movies based on video games. Yes, it's been done before. And of course, they have never been sucessful. But what if you took a video game that's based somewhat on reality, and you throw out all the crap that makes a racing movie terrible, because it's not making racing glamourous, it's making it sort of a hobby-turned-profession.

You don't have to make a big production out of it, because you're not making a movie within another racing series, after all, most of the different racing series in Gran Turismo are made-up (except the sports cars and JGTC cars).

You make it a slightly heart-warming tale; a kid gets 10,000 dollars, and he's going to buy his first car. And you can make it a lesson in how to drive smart, how to win against over-powered machinery, taking tests and failng them until you get it right, etc.

The kid progresses, and he wins some, loses some. But of course, he wins when it matters to the script. He tunes his car, and tunes it some more. He learns how to tune it, and learns the trials of making changes to the car, and dealing with those changes.

Well, give me ideas on how and why this will work as a movie, or give reasons why it's a bad idea to make a movie out of the Gran Turismo series. And of course, even if you have a good idea for it, Sony still has all the rights, so don't expect a royalty check in the mail...

For us Gran Turismo fans it would definetely rock :) 👍
But when you open your mind a little bit you'll find out that the movie will revolve around nothing but the cars, or the guy/car bonding experience, things which aren't in a demand all that great or have that much appeal to the general public.
And of course there will have to be romance  there always has to be romance in a stupid movie, we saw it happen in "Driven" and look how great that piece of crap movie turned out... well, nothing could save it anyways.

It doesn't seem all that impossible perhaps the movie could carry a message, a father and son conflict perhaps... I don't know. It's all very sketchy when you start coming up with ideas.

Hey, I liked Driven, and so did alot of other people I know. A Gran Turismo movie would be cool, but I have no idea how it would work, heh.

Umm... why if I may ask? The FX were entertaining, I'll give you that.
However, the writing, uhhh :odd: the acting, umm geez. The crashes blown way out of proportion every single time, now that just ain't right.
I expected a much better product. It had it's moments, yes, but sometimes I found myself saying what the characters were gonna say before they even did so themselves.
Just seemed predictable I guess.

Yes, in this at least, you are wierd. Driven was total toilet. Autosport Magazine refers to it as a horror movie.

And pupik, as far as I can remember, the Lara Croft Tomb Raider movie was reasonably successful.

 i loved the announcers reactions whenever a car would fly 50 feet in the air or blow up. they acted like it was an everyday occurance. "would you look at that!! looks like hes outta this race!" when they should be saying "HOLY ****!!! ive never seen anything like that happen in my entire broadcast career! i can only hope hes alright!"

if anything i think it would be more like the game "race driver" a young guy trying to build up his career and get into the big leagues

I reckon it would be a bit thin on story and thick on done up cars ala Fast and Furious. In other words, a popcorns movie, worthy of being stricken from the memory 5 minutes after exiting the cinema.

EDIT: Driven was horlicks. Race cars being driven over potholes and bumps in a towns main street. Yea, right.....

That's one way to put it. :P
I believe in a GT movie however it has to cover more ground than what pupik said, otherwise it'll just be a 1 1/2 hour comercial for the GT series.

I liked driven as well.

2 things made me like the movie

1. my love for champcar racing. hey a movie based on champcar racing must be good

2. the 1 in a million chance i was going to be in the movie (they filmed some at the 2000 gold coast indy, which i was at)

if it wasnt for those 2 factors i would of hated the movie.
it was too, well stupid. the team boss in a wheelchair a.k.a frank williams was what really anoyed me most. also the racing in the street was total bollocks, that scene ruined the whole movie for me, who the hell races champcars in a subruben street centre and not spin off the road when hitting manholes. lacked realism.

besides that driven eeerr ROCKED

What would make the movie work for me, is if it was either 100% real, or 100% CGI (computer generated imaging). I don't like the way 2 fast 2 furious did the mix of crappy cgi and the real racing. I can imagine the movie being made in cgi, kind of like final fantasy.

I can also see how making it all real would be really cool too. But they would just have to race on current tracks, I don't see them building tracks for the movie.:D

Not "as I have foreseen", to copy Emperor Palpatine? Anyway, I was thinking of Initial D, of all things.

Resident Evil wasn't too bad either. It's obvious it's based on a game, but it's no worse than other zombie-(re)slay-fests.

To keep the movie faithful to the game, crashing to walls and other cars couldn't cause retiring from race.:P

GT - The movie would have no final at all just like the game. 100% and no salute at all

Mabye like Python:s "The Meaning of Life".

eh it doesnt really need a storyline. they make tons of videos that are nothing but cars racing. why cant this be one of them.

So it's official: The idea won't work.

It would wind up just being a copy of Initial D, at best. It would probably be boring, trite, and repetitive. It's fair to say it's a bad idea, then.

The point of a video game's "career mode" it that you have control of your destiny, it's unique, and you control the plot line(s).

I do not think it is a good idea to underestimate a movie based on the game itself. Theoretically, a movie should be made as a masterpiece and it has to be, not just making it just too quickly and critically rate it bad. That would be stupid. But I like the fact that one guy has to start with 10,000 grand. I would love a guy who can do stuff the hard way. So I decide it would be a very good idea :D :)

It would be a good idea, all it needs is a decent plot. A guy with $10,000 is a start I guess. But other than that, you should only stick to technicalities of the game, like the names of the races and cups the guy would enter should be those of the game, or on whatever races appear throughout the movie have only 6 cars on the grid, etc. Just enough to make it identifiable.
Then have some kind of conflict. Off the bat I'm thinking the guy's family could have a major problem with him racing and risking his life (even though cars don't actually explode or whatever in the game itself ;) in some places the game's characteristics would have to be bent)
I know I disagreed before on how romance would "have to take place" etc. Well romance would have to take place. It's the amount of it and how it's molded into the story what matters.
So the guy's family doesn't want him out on the tracks, but he meets this chick at a race or something, she's a racer too (duh!:dunce: ) what more can a guy ask for right? :mischievous: All in all the guy has to either comply with his family or stick with the girl. I'm just kicking ideas around here.
Just so long as the situation doesn't climax at some point with both the guy and the girl in the same race and the dude handing over the race, and probably some championship to the girl. No racer on the face of this Earth would do that. Besides that'd be way too WAFFY. 👎 I almost think the whole idea of the guy being torn between both the loves of his life (racing and the girl) and his family's love is bad enough.

I had an idea for this. Based on just the racing, love of cars, etc. In the opening, its a zoomed in picture of a guard rail, with the sound of an engine, pushing really hard, and tires squeeling (going around a corner) and the sounds get closer and closer, and the camera slowy zooms out. When the sounds are right at the Camera, it zooms out quickly to the full view of a track corner as a car just flies around it and zooms off.

The story would be based on a guy, who just loves cars to death (he is married, to get alot of the romantic crap out of the way), and racing just as much. He decides to go from a casual, weekend racer, to full out pro racer. He has to go through alot of obsticles first. The race shots would have really good angles with alot of good high quality sound effects, capturing the art of racing, both visually, and by ear. Capturing every rev, every shift, every tire squeeling high G turn.

If the story is right, it can work...

[EDIT] Also, he works at a Performace Car Dealership, and regularly provides test drives at the track. One of his characteristics is his great driving ability. There could be a scene where he is giving a possible buyer a test drive around the track, and ends up scaring the buyer to death, screaming, panicing, going nuts, while the main character is just having fun :)...

That sounds very inspired by Initial D. :D Still good though. Some of those scenes you mentioned can be envisioned pretty easily and the result isn't bad at all. The story you cooked up has good potential in it too. Oh and by the way, that avatar slays me.

Well, Initial D did have a small part in it, only because of how the creaters were able to capture some racing.

The racing scene's would have to be VERY intense. Even if its just a small striaght, with a slight turn. The engine roaring, he shifts, the camera shakes, you can hear the shift and the engine note change, giving you the sence that he is literally flying. Then the turn comes up, he turns, the camera somewhat leans the the outside and the tires are squeeling, desperately trying to hold the car to the road.

And that is just an 1/8 of a mile straight with a slight turn ;)...
