Conclusion
1. Photomode wheels look excellent if taken correctly.
2. On track wheels look dull and 2d no matter what.
3. To get nice wheels set your exposure to 0 or close to that.

Here are some examples of great looking wheels.

Well some wheels look good that are somewhat in 3D, but those 2D flat ones look terriable.

Yeah thats what im trying to figure out. Ive been taking pics on certain cars and the wheels just look terrible on some cars and incredible on other cars? Whats the deal?

The wheel's offset changes depending on the car - a car that has a low offest will have a deep lip, cars that have a high offset do not. Some rims are meant to be on one, and not the other, but because you can put any wheel on any car, sometimes it has some strange results.

We are talking about the realistic shiny wheels compared to some extremly cheap looking flat wheels. Ill post an example in a few minutes in the first post.

I kinda feel like what's said above coinsides with how much time and energy they put into some wheels to look good and some they didn't. Also, most of the "Stock" rims you can get in the "wheel of the day" are obviously going to look better than some of the aftermarket ones just because they were probably taken off the modeled car which will obviously have more time spent on them because it was part of the car.

Well in those shots, the 3D wheels are in the proper photomode, whereas the 2D ones are when you've done some driving - maybe that's it?

Well are some pics from a replay or from the "photomode" part itself? Because maybe if its from a replay arent they 2d on replays.

ya, the 2 "bad" wheels are from photodrive

whereas the other few are from photomode

its to reduce amount of poly's in the game
.. if you took all those and changed the picture type, photodrive vs photomode, they would all look the same

flat in photodrive
3d in photomode

Case not closed. I have some pics with that Camaro that I took in photomode with the best flash and setting and the wheels are still dull and crappy.

Could you post that one?

I have some pictures of my RX-8 drifting...one picture turned out horrible because of the wheels.

those white wheels you have on your camaro dont do too well in photomode. i think its because all the wheels in the game have a different finish on them. there are a few that are actually chrome, but many of them are just silver or white. the ones on your camaro are white, but im sure you already knew that.

If you look at my photo page below there is a yellow 2005 mustang with the same wheels, its a night track so they look OK but if it was a day track im sure they wouldnt look too good.

Well when I get a chance, I'll take some photos of the same Imprezza in Photo Travel mode to compare with the replay photo I posted. I figured the detail was lower on them in replay mode which explained thier kinda crappy appearance. Only one way to know for sure though. Here's a question though...does anyone have a photo from a replay where the wheels look 3D?

So its the wheel design and not the gfx engine then? The initial comparison was 3d to 2d. If that is the case some wheels are bad looking in real life.

Excellent idea. Everyone is right. The pics of the wheels are a lot better in photomode. I just found a pic that Tangoman posted a while back of the 69 Camaro and I think he has the same wheels as I do and his pic of the wheels turned out decent. In about 3 minutes ill have it in the first post.
EDIT: I guess I will have to keep working with photomode or switch tires because I cannot get any decent wheel pics on the 69 Camaro.

..why dont yall just believe us lol
flat wheels = photodrive
3d wheels = photomode

I'd like to also point out something interesting... I noticed even some of the phototravel pics of my viper is worse than the photomode pics of the samn viper.

Unfortunately, I don't have any of the same viper but just check out my gallery in my sig (on dial up at them moment here  ) if you are getting restless waiting for camaroboy.

I agree but some wheels still look bad in photomode. Im going to mess with the Camaro and Chevelle some more tonight when I get home to try to perfect this wheel issue.

What rims are the rims on the second BMW M3, with those huge rims that look like spiinerzzzzz. (Photo by bossman88)

These;

Where can I get them?

If everyone wants to post some more nice wheel pics I can add them to the first thread for everyone to see whats really out there. :)
Try to keep the pics in thumbnail size if you can. Most people hate the Horizontal scroll bar at the bottom when huge pics are posted.

.whats with spell the .. teh .. i never got that?

no were looking at 3d vs flat... not colors or anything

and by the way, are the chrome wheels even chrome ingame? in photodrive?
i know the mirrors are.. guess the wheels are then also right?

OK, thats what I was wanting to see. Seems pretty convincing to me. Same rims look different in the different modes.

No the car is probably rollling but if you set the camera flash fast enough it will make the wheels and car look stopped. If I want that effect I set mine to 4000 but then the wheels are still dull and crappy.
