What this thread is for:
Posting suggestions for future photography competition subjects.

As of right now, I'm desperately in need of suggestions. So start suggesting!

  • Creation
  • Contrast (any form, doesn't have to be just brightness and darkenss ofcourse, for example, old vs new, you know)
  • Work
  • Colorful (or any particular color or -combination)
  • Emptiness (this is also a pretty wide one, I like that)
  • Metamorphose
  • Series (or repetition)
  • Emotions (in general or particular, like comfort(able), sinister, this might be hard though)
  • Wood (or other particular materials, glass, bricks, rubber,...)
  • The use of natural materials by humans (in objects and stuff)
  • Doors and/or windows
  • Voyeurism (in a non sexual way, think about the people you look at in bars, or on the subway, you see them, but they don't see you. Just think of E. Hopper's paintings. It's like, being in a scene, but feeling very disconnected to it, more enclosed in your own mind)
  • Atmospherical effects
That's what pops into my mind for now...

In photography class we had to photograph pictures based on a certain principal of art or elements of art.
Line, like we are doing this week, was one of the things we had to photograph, because it is an element of art. We had to take "Line" pictures.

You could also do a certain shape, or color. You could do a certain material, or object.

Yeah, i think it'll be easyer to find subjects if you think in terms of categories.

Yep I'll be participating. In fact, I took a pretty cool line photo right after posting that list. Still have to transfer it to this computer though.

Here are a few:

  • Children
  • Sky
  • Chrome
  • Rough Texture
  • Night / Darkness
  • Lights - man made
  • Letters - partial words
  • Motion
  • Abstract
  • Details / Macro
  • Work
  • Hands
  • Food
  • Fireworks - in 3 days after all (in the US)
  • Stop Action / Freeze Frame
  • Eyes
  • Bridges
  • Pattern(s)
  • Dirt / Sand / Mud
  • Liquids / Oils / etc ...
  • Glass
  • Leaves
  • Music
  • Machines
  • Power
  • Distance - Like a long road or down the train tracks, etc ...
  • Rust

That should be enough for a while. :sly:

Looks very good (we've had some already though). I like "rust" a lot.
I'm kind of addicted to taking such close ups that you wonder what it is from.

  • Clouds (more specific than sky (sky itself is ofcourse a goor subject too), I Love photographing clouds (if they're good))
  • Bumps (or damage in general)

We could widen the subject "chrome" to any metallic gloss no?

(hmm "distance" would be pretty hard here in belgium i think)

I thought of a few more things:
  • Counter light (shining around or through an object)
  • Roofs (and chimneys)
I thought of them while I was in the garden, taking some photos of one of my most favorite photo subjects: A bright blue sky with sharp, dense (dark) clouds and a bright sun behind them (creating a strong contrast near the edge of the clouds, and rays of sunlight around and through). So dramatic, i love it (the contrast, drama, dynamic, clair-obscure, Baroque, Romanticism,...).

I'd like to see some Artistic Nudes. Really.
And I don't mean anything explicit. Just some artistic body parts. I'd love to see the results. 👍

Of course, that would never happen... would it?

If this were a topic, I would be happy to review any images that were being considered for entry prior to their submission. I'm happy to take responsibility for assessing "the line" on artistry.

As for subjects, how about...
  • Children
  • Geometrics
  • Public Transport

Only now I saw this.
I really appreciate that, Giles. It's a great step for making this happen. Thank you.

"Public Transport" would be a wonderful subject.

👍
