World Tour of F1 (Via Google Earth)

So a few days ago I thought it would be fun to go around in Google Earth, finding every track in the 2006 F1 season. Well, I almost did. As of now (5/6/06) I have successfully found 13 of the 18 circuits that are and have been raced on this season. The one's I did find are below. The one's that I couldn't find, Bahrain, Malaysia, Turkey, China, and Brazil. This is because: the directons on the tracks site did absolutely nothing to help me out, the satellite photos aren't clear enough to show any viable resemblance, or I couldn't take it anymore and had to give up.

So here's the lot in order based on race schedule. If any of you guys know the location of the other tracks, feel free to either post it or send me a PM of the coordinates and I'll add it to this main listing.

Malaysia - Sepang International Circuit

Australia - Albert Park

San Marino - Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari

Europe - Nürburgring

Spain - Circuit de Catalunya

Monaco - Circuit de Monaco

Britain - Silverstone Circuit

Canada - Gilles Villeneuve Circuit

United States - Indianapolis Motor Speedway

France - Circuit de Nevers Magny Cours

Germany - Hockenheimrim

Hungary - Hungaroring

Italy - Autodromo Nazionale di Monza

Suzuka Circuit

Brazil - Autodromo Carlos Pace

Well there they are. On a sidenote. As you can see, the Hockenheimrim is the old version and couldn't view any updated shot. So that is as it stands now. You can view a shot of the major infield area HERE

It’s also the old Nürburgring. ;)

(Not the old old one, just the old GP version.)

I've found Sepang and Interlagos, which was very difficult to find in that wretched hi-res metropolis. As far as I know, Bahrain, Shanghai, and Turkey weren't built when the photos of those locations were taken.

I'm a Google Earth whore :) I've found and saved images of about 80 racetracks worldwide.

Edit: here's some coordinates

Malaysia: 2 45 38 67 N, 101 44 16 01 E (next to an airport)
Interlagos: 23 42 04 74 S, 46 41 51 81 W (between some lakes, as the name implies)

Thanks a lot. I cannot BELIEVE I didn't see Sepang before! I guess I was looking at the wrong airport and a bit further north. Because once I saw KLIA it's literally RIGHT there.

Regarding Interlagos. All I really needed to know was "Between Lakes." After that I found it almost as quickly as Sepang. Funny how that happens . . .

And regarding the other three. I can agree with your theory on the lack of recent shots of the areas. After looking for Bahrain, I realized that it was the only reason why I couldnt find it. I mean c'mon, a black track against a tan desert on not so large island shouldn't be difficult.

Now all you need to do is use paint and trace out the circuts for the blind like me :D

Well done on finding Interlagos! I have a Google Earth tour set up, but couldn't find the Brazilian track. I think it's the only one I'm missing. Oh, and Bahrain, which doesn't exist.

Did you notice that there's a huge offset between two pictures in Monaco?

On the left hand side is the left hander of Tabac. If you follow the track (backwards) towards the chicane at the end of the tunnel, you'll see that you end up in the sea. You have to jump about 70 metres north to get back on-track.

Nicely done. I've never really seen the tracks overhead like this. It makes me want to see if I could find the entire Nürburgring (not just the GP track). The only track that I've personally been to is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in both configurations. I would love to visit the Nürburgring in my lifetime eventually though.

The Hockenheim pic really shows off the magnitude of the old track, is HUGE!! :scared:

It took me about 4 hours to find it (not all at once). I had every other track (except the newest ones which don't show up), so it was a personal mission to find the damn thing.

It's fun to find things like that. I can't remember which city it was, but half of it had snow, and, across an abrupt divide, the other half did not. Interesting microclimates :sly: Older pictures of the Monaco circuit don't have that problem, as it's all in the same camera shot.

Not too hard; they're right next to each other. And the Nordschleife is now in high-resolution :D

Oh really? When I found it about a month ago. It was low-res. Almost as bad as Sepang. That was a nightmare. Trying to get directons with 500 different roads on the screen at a time seemed IMPOSSIBLE.

Very nice, I'm also a bit of a Google Earth whore. I had found a few of these, along with many more North American and GT4 tracks, before my HD failed... :(

yes, its definately melbourne, the major outline there is actually the outline of albert park lake, its harder to make out the route of the track itself but that is it

Dropout.
gilesguthrie, i didn't notice that! that's strange, why would a satellite pic do that..? :odd:
It's two different pictures taken at two different times and then re-assembled (poorly).

I've done a quick search for most of the tracks I had, I have 28 of them now, including 2 in Europe Monaco and Paul Ricard, which looks fantastic:

Most of them are in low resolution areas though. :indiff: There are quite a few well known tracks missing, mostly ovals.

I have:
  • Barber Motosport park 👍
  • Infineon 👍
  • Indianapolis 👍
  • Laguna Seca
  • Watkins Glen
  • Montreal GP
  • Mt. Tremblant
  • Road America
  • Road Atlanta
  • Mid-Ohio
  • Mid-America 👍
  • Sebring
  • Lime Rock
  • Willow Springs
  • Buttonwillow
  • Mosport
  • Talladega
  • Daytona
  • Phoenix
  • Portland 👍
  • Homestead
  • Las Vegas
  • Long Beach
  • Toronto (champcar)
  • Trois-Rivières (formula Atlantic)
  • Sanair (local)

Rename the file with a .kmz extension to load them in Google Earth.

Well I guess the Formula 1 aspect of this thread was short lived. But regarding tracks in general. For those of you who watch Top Gear. Here's the airport.

Well I guess the Formula 1 aspect of this thread was short lived.

If you're referring to my list, there are six of them (perhaps more I'm not aware of) that are / were used in Formula 1. :indiff:

Edit: Here's Fuji, for next year (although this is the old version):

...and, why not, also in Japan, Motegi:

Tsukuba:

Route 246

Two more:

Bahrain is finally there:

And China is there, but under construction:

Turkey is all we need now, but it still doesn't show up in any way. Maybe during the next satellite pass ;)

Awesome. 👍 I already had placemarks for these, It was exactly over the entrance for Bahrain and 2 miles off for Shangai. :P

Sepang is now in high resolution, too:

Here is the exact location for Turkey, I've seen aerial pictures of the track with the roads on the left.

Edit: Dubai also has been updated, we can see the Burj el Arab and "the Palm" in high resolution. 👍 Dubai's Autodrome was still in construction though, you can only see the outline.

Carl.

I just noticed that as well. The only two tracks that are still crappy quality are Spa and Monza (which is inexplicably surrounded by hi-res areas).

I have had all the pictures saved on my hard drive as of a week ago. Hopefully during a break from studying for finals I'll be able to edit the main post. Hopefully...
