Tourist Trophy offers up a good number of customizations including (but not limited to) gear for riders. You can choose between four different settings (two racing, two street) to customize your rider. That idea inspired me about Gran Turismo 5. Imagine being able to change up colors of all types of racing suits and such. You can do Sunday Cup wearing regular street clothes and a racing helmet. Maybe some racing overalls would help. And of course, your racing suit. Do you see any chance of DRIVER customization taking place in GT5? If so, how do you implement it? What details would you implement? Are there some classic racing outfits that should perhaps be unlocked like in "Tourist Trophy?"

I had something lined up, but I decided to prolong my views until get some more info to share with you all.

I wouldn't mind to see that, but I see no reason to implement this either, cause you hardly see the driver in the cars anyway. So, I guess we're not going to get that.

Regards
the Interceptor

Maybe just the colors of the clothes then. I can see a full customization for the helmet though. Say you get an array of helmet models (wheel of the day, anyone?), and a paintshop, where you can paint it to your own liking.

Hmmmz...I think it totally isn't atractive for Polyphony to integrate that into the game, I like the idea, but the change is veeeery small it will be realised

Remember the Edit button. ;)

But I'd like to see this. I posted about this once or twice, like in John's Racing Mod thread. I would like to see a designable wardrobe and racing gear. For one thing, this will be high def, and I'm sure the driver will be as visible as the ones in Forza are now. In many shots, he's quite visible.

But remember the convertibles and open cockpit racers, like the S2000, Chaterham and the F1 types. The driver will be visibly exposed. And then there's the pit crews who will be in uniform. I'd like me and my crew to stand out.

You can always trust John to post a thread with an original theme 👍

- You're never going to see the driver even of an opentop sports car or single seater as clearly as you can a bike rider, not whilst actually driving. I suppose for replays or photomode an option of customisation would be useful. I don't know if the ability to change between types of clothing is of any merit, i would have thought that most if not all forms of competitive motorsport have regulations stating that flame proof overalls are mandatory.

The option to choose different designs/colours of overalls and helmet would be nice, as would having your name on the side window of your car (where applicable). This would certain add to the 'human element' that PD like to talk about.

I had male AND female racers in mind with this thread. Racing isn't only a man's game. Ask people like Claudia Hurtgen, Katherine Legge, Liz Halliday, and of course, Danica Patrick. The only thing I'm not sure about is street clothes for a racer, since you'll likely need racing attire behind the wheel. I'm probably not sure about a character creation system (very unlikely). But for a number of racing outfits, one will need to examine stuff like Sparco (really popular), Simpson, or just about any maker of racing suits. You get two Racing outfits and two Street outfits in Tourist Trophy. I think it is possible to maybe have a certain racing suit you usually wear all the time. Just ask Ryan McKane in the "craptacular" Pro Race Driver. He normally worn the burgundy and blue racing suit to all of his races. You can maybe make your own racing outfit. You can maybe color it like your favorite sports team, your favorite car, or whatever. I personally have a liking of blue and red. I don't mean them together, but two dark and rich shades of blue for one outfit. Then I'd go with a red kind of like Ferrari red. Attention to detail means that I can likely put my name on it any way I wish. A generic name of FirstName LastName would mean that I'd have it like "F. LastName." I can do like American football teams and just have my last name on the back of my outfit.

Some racing games have visible drivers in the game. You're probably not going to see visible drivers in every car, but don't you want to be able to customize your outfit for when you do go racing? As for ladies, I'm sort of imagining a lady racer in street clothes as her long hair flows in the wind in a convertible. Come on now. We have to think about gentlemen and ladies for this deal. Unless you want ladies to play as guys or guys to play as ladies. There has to be a unique touch to all of this.

I'd like the option of having the outfit you wear in GT4 with the Motor Carriages (leather jactet, riding gloves, goggles, scarf) for driving evey car, even the open top LMPs.

^^ YES! I like it, vintage gear would rock!

I am hoping that when the next GT hits a PS3 near me, that it has most (if not every single one) of these ideas, and more. Kazunori-sama is an ambitious dreamer, and when he talks of Gran Turismo, the horizon is pretty vast.

In the DVD series, "Victory by Design: Ferrari," the host Alain de Cadenet (👍!!!) had on just a blue dress shirt and some khaki pants and some dress shoes. But when he stepped into the Ferrari 333SP, he wore only some goggles. But I think vintage gear for vintage cars makes more sense than wearing safety gear from before 1945 in something like an Audi R8.

Maybe your outfit could be switched much like if you have Dirt or Snow tires available but not equipped. Female racers would have some trouble with a vintage racing deal, because not too many ladies raced in the past. Probably one of my favorite classic female racers was Michele Mouton, who was a great pilot of the Audi Quattro rally car back in the 1980s. It would be interesting to think about what a vintage lady would wear in the field of battle (competitive racing, of course).

A vintage lady driver? depends on the era, in the '30s, she might wear typical driving clothes for a man, but in the teens it might be a dress and a pair of goggles! about in the late 40s you'd start seeing driving uniforms. (Though late '40s-early '50s Grand National driver Sarah Christian wore plain, civillian clothing, but that was NASCAR in it's first days.))

I'd personally like to create a driver based on my character Melanie Prower, only as a human, and not an anthro fox. (just see http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/23653412/ for more info.)

Go off track a bit. How about having other passenger/s on board?

That would be a nice touch for rallying, a navigator. It would really only be necessary if there were point to point races though. They could also add a driving instructor to ride with you on license tests and maybe have some way of him guiding you through the laps and/or telling you where you are losing time. I suppose you could also just throw in some passengers for the fun of it when lapping for fun. You can do it in Live For Speed.

You know, think about the extra driver like that Toyota MTRC Concept Car. It's you and someone else. You can relive a certain rally combination of Colin McRae and Nicky Grist. Some other rally combinations include some husband and wife combinations. That's a field that can be modified nicely to one's extent. It's also a pretty fun side to think about here.

Naff idea if you ask me. What's the point in PD wasting their time making all these different "suit", when most of the time, you never see the driver.

It's a nice touch on TT, as you can see the rider. PD have far more important things to worry about.

That's my point John. Vintage gear for vintage cars does make more sense, but I think it would funny to see a vintage driver in something like an R8. The anachronism would be cool, and it would be an interesting option besides all of the standard new gear that's all the same except for colors.

Some games have a visible driver, and not necessarily F1 and LMP cars. Look at the visible driver in Forza Motorsport (or at least I see a driver in some cars). The first GT game to feature visible drivers was GT3. In fact, you can look at a preview or a replay of an F1 driver in an F1 car. You can notice the driver barely moving his hands as he/she grasps the steering wheel and turning with it. It's a nice touch. I've seen a number of times in which drivers in cars are visible, and I'm not talking about the shadowy creature in most recent racing games. I think we can all agree that drivers won't be 100% visible in cars like they are visible in F1 cars or Le Mans Prototypes. When you do get to see your driver, don't you want to come up with a more unique racing outfit than the generic Gran Turismo helmet and the red (or whatever color it is) racing suit? Custom gear would be pretty interesting. For example, I've seen Tiff Needell sport a helmet which simply has in artful letters, "Tiff."

If you want to get technical, let's look into some real racing outfits for you to see what you can actually dress up your player with. The most popular racing suit I know of is from the Sparco Racing family. Here are some examples of their racing suits: { http://www.saferacer.com/sprasu.html }. There's a suit they have that's specially suited towards oval racing called the Super Speedway Suit. It's described as being a racing suit created as a result of NASCAR drivers' concerns while on the track. Knowing how crazy the motorsport can get, they'll need all the protection they can get. Away from the NASCAR realm, there's a racing suit specially rated by the FIA called the Pro-Driver Suit. But if you're looking for one of the most popular racing suits, Sparco has the Sparco 5 Racing Suit. The Sparco 5 Racing Suit is the most widely-used racing suit among many professional racers. And just imagine if you could have your own Sparco racing suit in GT5, and be able to color it up as you like. You can check out all the other suits on this site. I'm not advertising here, I'm just describing some of these suits for broader discussion of racing suits in GT5.

So that's my Sparco example I wanted to share. Anyone want to carry on discussion? You can. Please note that I didn't mention gloves and driving shoes. I only wanted to focus on the suits themselves. But I'll get to gloves and shoes maybe in a future post.

Having real-world suits woudn't be a bad idea. being able to customize them (Dodge logos for meeee...) would be good, too.

ohter suit manus?

Here are a list of new pictures for GTHD, in case you haven't seen them already (from: < http://www.gran-turismo.com/jp/sp/d376.html >):

Recent posts in the thread "New GT HD Screenshots" have led to me reviving this thread to have a seperate discussion about racing outfits and such. How do you like the detail of the racing outfits and is there any chance we could see a wide variety of racing gear?

I've been having way too much fun in Forza. Well, racing too, but the thing which keeps dragging me back is the paint shop. It's surprisingly powerful for a basic graphic tool. You can't paint rims, wheels or put decals on windows (you can never do much with Windows  ) but I expect this to change in Forza 2.

What I wanted to reiterate in John's thread is the fact that you can see the drver and helmet in these next gen racers quite well, and that includes Gran Turismo HD. What would stick out like a sore thumb is having a car you had created (the return of race mod is almost a no brainer), and then having a driver with suit and helmet that had graphics nothing like your car's.

Rather than have a selection of basic driver gear that might match the paint job you had created for your car, I want to have the same paint editor available for my driver, as well as the pit crew. With the amount of detail Polyphony is wanting to put into Gran Turismo on the PS3, this should be as much of a priority as anything. It could be as simple as having suit templates that you fill in the suit and helmet patterns with the colors of your choice, have selectable border band widths, prominent sponsor delas and locations... this sort of thing should be easy enough to implement. But the artist in me wants to have complete control to create suits and helmets from scratch as well. Hopefully that shot of the Polyphony office with that helmet beside the Logitech wheel is an indication of how far ahead they're thinking in this regard.

In light of recent pictures of GT5 Prologue, I'm reviving this thread to discuss any sort of possibilities of racing gear. It began with a lovely trailer of GT5 Prologue. Sixteen cars to a track. But in the context of this thread, notice the racing outfits on the old pictures of GT5 Prologue as a driver was behind the wheel of the NISMO Motul/Pitwork 350Z (that IGNore thought was a Ferrari). Judging at least by recent pictures, the possibility of team uniforms can come into play. You have to think about Tourist Trophy for a moment. It wasn't liked too well among most media types, but it provided some possibilities. Something I like doing is talking about elements from other games that could be of interest in future GT games. I mentioned the sun sparkling off the cars like in "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" and Enthusia. Tourist Trophy offered driver (or rider in this case) view and customizable rider gear. It could be a prelude of things to come for the next GT. A bike game with hints toward something bigger? Sure. Think of when you bought "Ridge Racer Type 4" and played the Bonus Disc that featured the classic Ridge Racer running at 60 FPS. Did that lead to something? How about the devlopment for a game called... Ridge Racer V? Game companies will do that at times. They will release something that could end up being a prototype for something bigger and better in the future. We're seeing it right now- full driver outfits, different helmets, nicely-rendered garage shots... you have to think ahead at times, even with video games. Don't believe in the remote possibility of unique racing outfits? Take a look at these screenshots courtesy of :

Also, think about the kind of outfit you'd want to wear when you go behind the wheel like with these pictures:

So I now like to reintroduce this topic for more discussion on perhaps customizable racer gear. At least these pictures are showing that this can certainly be possible.

I´ve seen Renault and TVR specific suits aswell.
companyspec suits is something that really speaks to me, as I tend to paint my cars in either country- or companycolors whenever possible (Green brits, silver germans and so on).

However, a possibilty to personalize your gear would be very welcome indeed, especially when it comes to OL play, where individuality most likely will play a major roll.

Sorry, but IMO PD should rather use their time to improve the artificial idiocy than worrying around with colours and drive suits you even won't see 95% of the time playing the game.

how bout the good 'ol Miami Vice look with the Hawaiian shirt and white khaki pants for the cruise in the Ferrari that you just won, it would make for great photomode material :dopey:

NASCAR 2003 has a simple way of editing your driver's clothing, along with his car. Here is an example of Juan Montoya's COT painted by an amateur. Little Big Planet lets you put any photo on your PS3 HDD into the game world AND gives you the ability to scale/rotate it. Why can't PD do this for GT5? If they did let us the below would be possible to do. Notice the driver's helmet, arms, and upper torso are completley customizable. If PD wanted to they could include something like this.
